SPATNZ is a Sanford owned company that has developed methods to breed New Zealand native GreenshellTM mussels in captivity at commercial scale. It’s more difficult than it sounds because Greenshell mussels are notoriously challenging to breed in a hatchery.

Results of 2017 surveys and preliminary modelling for the 2018 Pacific cod stock assessment show a 71 percent reduction in the Gulf of Alaska bottom trawl survey Pacific cod biomass estimate from 2015 to 2017. 

The news came to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee and Advisory Panel on October 3 in a presentation from Steve Barbeaux, a research biologist with the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington, who said the drop was particularly pronounced in the central Gulf of Alaska.

The Tokyo metropolitan government said Monday it has set the time for relocating the operations of the Tsukiji fish market to the nearby Toyosu waterfront area at between September and October 2018. A specific date will be discussed with industry groups, according to the local government. 

The announcement came after Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike said in late August that the market, where daily fish auctions attract many tourists, will be moved no earlier than next June.

A Belfast-based seafood supplier has signed a six-figure deal with Tesco to sell its fresh fish directly to shoppers. 

The move into retail for Keenan Seafood will see the 70 year-old fish business bring some of its 250 lines to the supermarket's customers and create five new jobs in the process.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (October 16) that a Taiwan hairy crab sample was found to contain dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at a level exceeding the action level adopted by the CFS. 

Following risk assessment, the CFS has instructed the trade to suspend import into and sale within Hong Kong of hairy crabs raised in the same aquaculture farm (an aquaculture farm in Zhongli District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan) of the unsatisfactory sample with immediate effect.

New research conducted by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), an international non-profit offering certification for socially and environmentally responsible seafood, finds that a majority of Swedish consumers are aware that 40% of the fish they buy is farmed, but fewer are aware of how to reconcile their concerns about the impact of farmed fish with their buying decisions. 

“Our research shows that buying responsibly produced fish and seafood is important to Swedish shoppers,” says Barbara Janker, ASC Commercial Marketing Manager for Northern Europe.

Hilton Food Group, the UK meatpacking company which supplies major retailers, has made a lateral acquisition by buying seafood business Icelandic Food Group, which trades as Seachill, for GBP80.8m (US$106.3m). 

The widely anticipated deal - with Seachill's parent Icelandic Group - was announced to the London Stock Exchange by Hilton this morning (18 October).

At the Our Ocean Conference in Malta, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Walton Family Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and FishWise announced a new alliance to combat illegal fishing and strengthen sustainable fisheries management. 

The Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) is a global initiative for knowledge exchange and action to promote legal and sustainable fisheries through improved transparency in seafood supply chains. FishWise, a nonprofit sustainable seafood consultancy, will coordinate the alliance.

Qatar’s ministerial committee on the stimulation and engagement of the private sector in the country’s economic development projects recently launched the first private sector fish farming project with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per year, said a report. 

The ministerial committee is chaired by the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.

Since the end of 2014, consumers in the European Union (EU) have had access to better information when buying fishery and aquaculture products. 

Mandatory labels or markings for retail sale of seafood (including some types of processed seafood) must, in particular, include information on both the commercial and the scientific names of the species, whether it has been fished or farmed, the catch area or country of production, and the fishing gear used.
