Second Announcement: EAFP - 17th International Conference on Diseases of Fish and Shellfish | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

On behalf of the Council of the European Association of Fish Pathologists and the Local Organising Committee we cordially invite you to participate in the seventeenth International Conference of the Association. The conference will be held at the Auditorium Alfredo Kraus, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain from 7th to 11th September 2015. The Auditorium of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria bears the name of Alfredo Kraus, the internationally renowned opera singer in recognition of his contribution to the world of music. The building that houses the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, the work of architect Oscar Tusquets, is one of the most outstanding and representative constructions of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Situated at the end of Las Canteras Beach, this isolated and independent fortress was designed as a lighthouse to identify and protect the city. Ever since it was opened, the image of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium as a sentry watching over Las Canteras Beach, has become one of the most emblematic views of the city. .

World Aquaculture Adelaide 2014 Special session on regional cooperation for improved biosecurity

World Aquaculture Adelaide 2014 Special session on regional cooperation for improved biosecurity | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

A special session on regional cooperation for improved biosecurity will be held at World Aquaculture Adelaide 2014, which runs from 7-11 June. The special session will be held on 11 June from 9am to 12:30pm.

The special session will be organised into three sub-sessions:

Regional cooperation in aquatic animal health management: The rationale, trans-boundary nature of aquatic animal diseases, current aquaculture practices and global trade, what has been done and accomplished, where are the gaps, what needs to be done and the way forward. Presenters will include Dr Brett Herbert (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) and Dr Eduardo Leano (NACA).Dealing with emerging diseases - focus on shrimp acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (“EMS”): Why do new disease emerge? Can we predict disease emergence in aquatic systems? What have we learnt from emerging diseases in the region? Updates on AHPNS including primary pathogens, geographical spread, and the latest on diagnostics and management interventions. Presenters will include Peter Walker (CSIRO) and Siripong Thitamadee (Mahidol University).Domestication programmes and disease emergence / management: Concept of domestication and breeding programmes, implications of genetic diversity, disease susceptibility and resistance, dependence of the Asian shrimp industry on SPF P. vannamei. Are we heading on the right path and should there be regional efforts for domestication of native species? What are the implications for disease occurrence and production? Presenters will include Dr Greg Coman (CSIRO) and Prof. Roger Doyle (Genetic Computation Ltd.).

Discussion panels will be held after the sub-theme presentations to allow participants to interact with the presenters. The session will bring together industry and scientists performing agricultural research and development to discuss closer cooperation in health management and biosecurity. In particular, it will raise awareness of the link between genetic erosion and disease, an issue which has not been previously investigated or addressed by the aquaculture community. This is a foundation issue that must be addressed in domestication and genetic improvement programmes for prominent aquaculture species.

"We are excited to announce the next International Conference of Fish & Shellfish Immunology will be held in beautiful Portland, Maine.  ICFSI 2016 will be the 2nd International Conference of Fish & Shellfish Immunology and the first time it will be hosted in the United States.

The sea has provided food and a way of life to Maine people for centuries. Today, Maine fish and shellfish seafood is a half-billion dollar industry that supports fishing families, working waterfronts, local economies, and our heritage. Portland is one of New England’s oldest cities settled in 1633.  It is the largest city in Maine and boasts an active social scene with renowned seafood restaurants and many independent microbreweries.  For many it is a foodies dream, and Portland, Maine was voted “Foodiest Small City” in the US by Bon Appetit magazine.

The Holiday Inn by the Bay offers quality accommodation at reasonable rates, and outstanding conference facilities, with the ease and convenience of being close to the center of Portland, and Portland harbor.

And there will be lots of outstanding science too!"

   ● Discuss the current status of aquaculture and fisheries education in the AP countries with special reference to

     √ Curricula and courses;

√ Accreditations, quality and certification; and

     √ Collaboration and partnership.

   ● Examine the existing and future linkages between AFS and regional educators with international agencies and institutions.

  ● Explore the on-going development of distance education and its impacts on the delivery of aquaculture and fisheries education. Presentation and working language in the symposium will be English. Welcome to Shanghai Ocean University and the fabulous city of Shanghai in April 2015!

The Asian Aquaculture Insurance & Risk Management Conference (AAIRMC)

The Asian Aquaculture Insurance & Risk Management Conference (AAIRMC) | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

Hong Kong 13-15th May 2014

Asia is the powerhouse of aquaculture! The industry in the region is growing at a rapid rate and leads the rest of the World in the volume and value of its output, in the number and variety of the species grown, and in the variety of the growing systems it uses.

For too long the insurance industry has focused on the aquaculture in the Americas, Europe, and Australasia to the exclusion of the Asian region where it has failed to recognise the potential for providing its services. This conference will focus on insurance and risk management of aquaculture in Asia and will bring together experts in all the inputs the insurance market needs if it is to expand profitably in the region.

"AAIRMC", The Asian Aquaculture insurance & Risk Management Conference, is a development of the very successful series of aquaculture insurance and risk management conferences that have been held in Europe over the past 25 years, the 13th of which was held in Istanbul, Turkey, in April 2013.

Like the European conferences. AAIRMC will bring together experienced insurers, reinsurers and underwriting agents, loss adjusters, risk management surveyors, brokers, legal specialists, disease experts, producers, bankers and investors, government officials responsible for aquaculture, and other experts who can provide considerable experience of the unique risk and risk management demands of  aquaculture.

Hong Kong and the Conference Venue, The Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Kowloon, combine to provide a ideal location for the Conference. Hong Kong is easily reached from all parts of the region, and the Sheraton offers the convenience and flexibility that will enable delegates to mix together, meet others with similar interests, and discuss doing business, all in the kind of discreet and pleasant surroundings that the European conferences have benefited from over many years.

Aquaculture in Motion 2013 - FEAP

Aquaculture in Motion 2013 - FEAP | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

FEAP organised the 2nd edition of 'Aquaculture in Motion',  Wednesday 6th of November in Le Méridien Hotel in Brussels. This year the event focussed on the ‘Strategic Guidelines for the Sustainable Development of European Aquaculture’ that were published by the European Commission in April 2013. These Guidelines aim to assist the EU Member States to define national targets while taking account of their circumstances, institutional arrangements and relative positions in terms of aquaculture activities. While the aims to promote aquaculture are intended to be achieved through a voluntary open process of coordination, it is also proposed, where appropriate, that common objectives be identified, alongside measurable indicators for progress.

In providing a focus on the need for quantified targets and relevant indicators, Aquaculture in Motion intends to stimulate the identification of Best Practice for the key performance indicators that need to be agreed as measures of progress and development. Moving European aquaculture forward with successful sustainable strategies was the target of this year’s Aquaculture in Motion.
