MOOCs and disruptive innovation: Implications for higher education

MOOCs and disruptive innovation: Implications for higher education | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

This paper uses the theory of disruptive innovation (Bower and Christensen, 1995) to examine MOOCs development and how their approach could be used to help institutions explore innovative approaches for teaching and learning and to develop new business models in order to gain competitive advantages in the education market. MOOCs provide institutions with a vehicle to think creatively and innovatively to explore new business models and flexible learning paths in HE provision. However, there is a need to rethink current higher education structures and policies and working practices that obstruct innovation. This includes funding arrangements and the ability to disaggregate teaching from  assessment and accreditation for differential pricing and pursuit of marketing activities.

John Bostock's insight:

Some good comments on how we start to combine the best of MOOCs and face-to-face teaching.

Is Student Feedback A Waste Of Time?

Is Student Feedback A Waste Of Time? | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

From the Aqua-tnet project blog :

"Obtaining student feedback on courses has become standard practice in many institutions. There is surely a simple logic that teachers and course managers should be listening to the views of students and taking them into account as they revise or develop future courses? I was therefore interested to read two other blog posts that take a very contrary view....."

John Bostock's insight:

Some muses on a couple of recent blog articles about the value of student feedback questionnaires...

Scottish Government - An Assessment of the Benefits to Scotland of Aquaculture

Scottish Government - An Assessment of the Benefits to Scotland of Aquaculture | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

A New independent report shows the Scottish aquaculture industry ‘provides considerable benefits for fragile economic areas’  contributing up to £1.4 billion to Scottish economy.

"The report commissioned by Marine Scotland and the Highlands and Islands Enterprise has been published by Imani and SRSL.

The economic benefits from the industry are wide ranging and are felt across Scotland including areas that are not traditionally associated with it such as the Central Belt.

The report estimates that if the 2020 industry production target of 223,000 tonnes is met it could have a turn-over value of £2 billion to the Scottish economy and support 10,000 jobs.

Other findings include:

Direct production alone contributed a turn-over of at least £550 million to the Scottish economy and 2,800 jobs in 2012Including added income across the country the industry is currently estimated to contribute a turn-over of £1.4 billion and 8,000 jobs in ScotlandSignificant improvements have been made to the environmental impact of the industry and compares well with other animal production industriesQuality and high value is Scottish aquaculture’s trump card"
John Bostock's insight:

This may be a bit parochial, but a welcome study on the Scottish Aquaculture Industry that will provide good insight into the industry and economic factors for all students of aquaculture

The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2014

The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2014 | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it
"Fisheries and aquaculture play a vital role in achieving FAO’s Strategic Objectives of eliminating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition. As reported in this edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture, people have never consumed so much fish or depended so greatly on the sector for their well-being as today. As the demand for fish increases, the sector is also striving to be more productive and sustainable and to enable more inclusive and efficient systems while reducing rural poverty and enhancing the resilience of livelihoods to disasters, crises and climate change."
John Bostock's insight:

MSc Aquatic Food Security - University of Stirling

MSc Aquatic Food Security - University of Stirling | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

"Food security is a complex issue of global significance and understanding the role and contribution of seafood within food security is an emerging research area. Seafood products are provided by both aquaculture and capture fisheries and are one of the most highly traded food products globally. Including seafood in our daily diet provides an affordable source of macro and micronutrients required for optimal human health and development.

This course is designed to introduce the global issues affecting seafood production and trading, and will promote an understanding of the key factors affecting aquatic food production, post-harvest protocols, post-mortem metabolic events and microbial/chemical processes key for food safety and quality. Sensory assessment and shelf-life extension technologies will also be covered. The course will also examine other key issues in seafood trading such as traceability systems, certifications as well as the impact of governance and legislation on the global seafood sector.

This is the only aquatic food security MSc currently available in the UK. It will comprehensively follow the food chain from production through to consumer health and welfare."

John Bostock's insight:

New MSc Programme at the University of Stirling is now open for applications.

This is the second report in a series following the evolution of the modernisation agenda for higher education in Europe, following a 2011 report on funding and the social dimension. It examines policy
and practice related to the student experience of higher education through three stages: access, which requires awareness of the offer of higher education, the requirements to be admitted, and the process
of admission; progression through the study programme, including support that may be provided when problems are encountered; and the transition from higher education into the labour market.

Sustainable Aquaculture: Five Strategies to Getting Growth Right

Sustainable Aquaculture: Five Strategies to Getting Growth Right | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

A guest blog by Richard Waite of the World Resources Institute (WRI), Michael Phillips of WorldFish, and Randall Brummett of the World Bank.

The world’s appetite for fish is steadily growing. Finfish and shellfish currently make up one-sixth of the animal protein people consume globally. As the global wild fish catch peaked in the 1990s, aquaculture—or fish farming—has grown rapidly to meet world fish demand, more than doubling production between 2000 and 2012. New research shows that aquaculture production will need to more than double again between now and 2050 to meet the demands of a growing population.

John Bostock's insight:

Continuing the theme of sustainability - this blog article from Worldfish and associated paper sets out some strategies for ensuring future sustainability in aquaculture

DigiSkill Network | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

The strategic guidelines of Europe 2020 put particular emphasis in strengthening horizontal cooperation and the sharing of experience and good practice among the Member States. It’s really crucial for education to fulfil its role in the knowledge triangle, research and innovation objectives and outcomes need to feed back into education, with teaching and learning underpinned by a strong research base, and with teaching and learning environments developed and improved through greater incorporation of creative thinking and innovative attitudes and approaches. Additionally there is a mainstream of eLearning in national policies for the modernisation of education and training, including in curricula, assessment of learning outcomes and the professional development of teachers and trainers.

According to the OECD survey, teachers have few incentives to improve their teaching, as while the most common types of professional development activity available to them are not the most effective. The majority of teachers would like more professional development (particularly on ICT skills, and student behaviour). It has to be mentioned that education and training play a fundamental role in achieving the ‘Europe 2020’ objectives.

All the above create a great deal of activity to ensure basic ICT skills as part of digital competence and learning to learn skills. Current developments in ICT and Web 2.0 technologies have offered the potential for new services, which has significantly transformed our day-to-day personal and professional activities; bare the potential to do the same for education and training. Known as ICT learning, using such technologies can be as simple as accessing a training timetable online, through very complex as developing virtual communities of practice for sharing and creating knowledge.
