The course is designed for professionals actively involved in wetland management and/or wastewater treatment. They may be working in organisations responsible for water treatment or responsible for wetland conservation/sustainable use of wetlands. Targeted are also those who have an interest in onsite wastewater treatment for small communities.


Upon completion, the participant should be able to:

Understand the basic principles of wastewater treatmentDistinguish the functions of the different compartments in the constructed wetlandApply the concept of constructed wetlands to wastewater treatmentEvaluate the importance of operation and maintenanceDesign a constructed wetland treatment system


Participants complete the course in a period of about four months (16 weeks) with a workload of 140 hours. A participant is expected to spend about 8 hours per week on reading, discussion and assignments. The course is sub-divided into 3 modules and a written assignment.

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has developed an aquaculture simulator which allows users to virtually visit a fish farm.

The project is being undertaken in collaboration with Måsøval salmon farms in Frøya, Sør-Trøndelag.

Monicha Seternes, head of environment and development, Måsøval fish farming industries, said: “We’re working on establishing a centre around the simulator on Frøya, and have ambitions to develop Norway’s first aquaculture simulator for breeding.”

“Combined with an actual visit to a fish farm, a simulator like this will make it possible to experience a breeding cycle that usually takes 14-22 months in about 45 minutes. This is unique, and will give visitors a completely different view of our work than just a visit to a farm would.”

The programme uses Oculus Rift 3D-goggles, where you can look around a virtual reality just by turning your head, and carry out different actions using a video game controller. NTNU said that several large companies are already investing in this type of technology.

The simulator is just the beginning, the researchers say. The plan is to promote the programme as a tool to promote the Norwegian fish farming industry.

Mr Sternes added: “We imagine that this simulator, which call the ‘mini-simulator’ will help with recruiting and building expertise, and make the audience curious enough to want to know more about this fantastic industry that we are a part of.

Researchers are trying to understand why the vast majority of students fail to finish free online classes and who is signing up for the classes to begin with.
One widely quoted dropout figure for students in massive open online courses is 90 percent. The number would be staggeringly high for a traditional class and has been used to cast doubt on the promise of MOOCs.
The number is simple to come up with: take the number of users who register for a course and compare it to the number still participating at the end. But is it fair?

If attrition rates are the measure of an online class then MOOCs fail.

However, attrition is just one measure (and not the best measure) of a massive open online class.

The ASEAN-FEN is a team of university-based consortia representing the fisheries and aquaculture oriented institutions within the Southeast Asia region. The ASEAN-FEN is established by agreement of its principal members namely Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (Malaysia), Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia), Can Tho University (Vietnam), Nong Lam University (Vietnam), Kasetsart University (Thailand), Prince of Songkla University (Thailand), Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (Thailand) and Universitas Air Langga (Indonesia) for the purpose of supporting and enhancing the fisheries and aquaculture through education, research, and public outreach in the region. The ASEAN-FEN supports and facilitates the activities of educators, scientists, and agencies responding to local, regional, national, and international issues on fisheries and aquaculture. Annual activities include International Fisheries Symposium 2015.

Ecuador To Host Next BAP Auditor Training Course | Aquaculture Certification, Responsible Fish and Shrimp Farming

 

The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) division invites new auditor candidates and returning auditors requiring refresher training to attend a BAP auditor training course in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3, 2015.

The course is also open to industry observers, including government officials, producers and other industry stakeholders who wish to learn more about the BAP certification standards and auditing process.

The course will cover all of the BAP standards, including the seafood processing plant standards (new Issue 4); finfish and crustacean farm standards (includes land-based aquaculture systems: ponds, fresh/brackish water cage farms and marine cage farms); salmon farm standards (new Revision 2); mussel farm standards; finfish, crustacean and mollusk hatchery and nursery standards; and feed mill standards. The course will be held at The Grand Hotel Guayaquil.

We are living in a world characterized by change, complexity and paradox. These changes signal the emergence of a new global context for learning that has vital implications for education. It requires that we revisit the purpose of education and the organization of learning. The complexity of today’s world requires a comprehensive approach to education policy embedded in a better understanding of the way in which knowledge is created, controlled, disseminated, acquired, validated and used. It also requires further development of the ethical principles that govern education and knowledge as common goods.

 

Rethinking the purpose of education and the organization of learning has never been more urgent. The result of the work of a Senior Experts Group established by the Director-General of UNESCO to rethink education in a changing world has now been completed.

The course is designed for professionals actively involved in water quality monitoring and management. They may be working e.g. for environmental agencies, consultants, as environmental or water management officers in local, regional or national governments, as staff of NGOs, or as junior university lecturers, and may not have the time to undertake a course that lasts several weeks abroad.


Upon completion, the participant should be able to:

understand and apply concepts of water quality and pollution processes in rivers and lakes;understand and apply the different steps of the monitoring cycle in rivers and lakes;understand the basic concepts of groundwater quality and monitoring;apply common statistical techniques for water quality data evaluation;design sound and sustainable freshwater quality monitoring and assessment programmes under specified conditions. Participants complete the course in a period of 4 months with a workload of 140 hours. A participant is expected to spend about 8 hours a week on average through reading, discussion and assignments. The course is sub-divided into 4 subjects and a written assignment. Within the course, each subject starts and ends on a specified day. Each subject takes 2-4 weeks. Within this period, the participant is free to study in his or her own time. Questions with regard to the subject can be posted on the discussion forum, eliciting responses from fellow participants. The teachers also regularly comment on the questions posted on this forum.

ADVANCES IN SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE PROCEDURES

26-29 October 2015 at the University of Las Palmas de Grand Canaria.


The course is aimed at early-stage researchers (e.g., Master and PhD students) and professionals from the aquaculture sector or environmental research institutions across the globe. More specifically the course will welcome research and professionals candidates from European Outermost Regions and Overseas Countries and Territories.


The four-day event will facilitate discussion and exchange of information between European Research Area members, specially the ones from Overseas Regions and Overseas Countries and territories on current aquaculture issues dealing with marine spatial planning,  ecosystem interactions and aquaculture development in coastal areas.

This scientific and technical course will be organized around specific modules focusing on:

We are pleased to announce that the National Agricultural Research and Innovation Centre, Research Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture (NARIC HAKI), in the frame of the EU-project "Advanced Research Initiatives for Nutrition and Aquaculture (ARRAINA)", will organize the ARRAINA Workshop on Current Challenges and Perspectives of Trout Feeding on 7th October 2015 in Gdansk, Poland.

The main target audience of the workshop is fish farmers of Poland and the neighboring countries, but the participation of other stakeholders (researchers, policy-makers, etc.) is also welcome. For young scientist and farmers mobility grants will be available.

The workshop will be held at Polish Trout Breeders Association, Gdansk, Poland.

Participation to the workshop is free. The language of the workshop is English and Polish, interpretation will be provided.

The workshop will consist of plenary sessions to present the project’s outputs and overviews on the current issues and challenges in trout and salmon feeding. Session will be on broodstock nutrition, larvae feeding and grow out of trout and salmon, followed by discussion to provide a representative view of the research needs of the sector.

A NERC / MASTS / HWU Scientific Diver Training Programme delivered as an IANTD qualification in Orkney

Course 1: 5th September 2015 – 11th September 2015

Course 2:  12th September 2015 – 18th September 2015

Synopsis

The team will provide training in core diving skills including trim, efficient configuration, stowage, precision buoyancy control and maneuvering. HWU will provide training in underwater identification skills to complement established industry-standard survey techniques (the focus of previous 2014 and 2015 courses) as well as emerging national monitoring methods. In the course Dr Bill Sanderson, Dr Joanne Porter and Professor Hamish Mair will teach skills that deal with recording species underwater (with laboratory support for specimen work-up), recording species using quadrats, taxonomic identification skills for biodiversity assessment, specimen collection and preservation for a variety of uses including omics for down-stream processing. The training will also provide students with access to stills photography and videography to support identification work with tuition lead by award winning photographer Richard Shucksmith.  IANTD UK instruction by Kieran Hatton (Diving in Depth) complements the established scientific diving pedigree of Heriot-Watt with progressive techniques and diving skills developed to the high level achieved by today’s technical divers.

The training will take place at the Heriot Watt University campus in Orkney and wet sessions will be on a live-aboard charter for comfort and efficiency.  The archipelago of Islands around Scapa Flow has a track record of acceptable diving conditions throughout the year.

A total of 7.5% of all European marine fish species are threatened with extinction in European waters, according to the European Red List of Threatened Species published today by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and the European Commission. While some species are recovering, marine management has been less successful for many other commercial fishes: 40.4% of European sharks, rays and chimaeras face an elevated risk of extinction.
The Red List report, financed by the European Commission, is the first ever complete assessment of marine fishes native to Europe, assessing all of the 1,220 species present in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, North Sea, and the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, including many highly exploited species that support large commercial, recreational, and artisanal fisheries. The highest number of threatened species can be found in the Mediterranean Sea, the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the Macaronesian islands.
