This site, a joint initiative of the European Commission, the Council of Europe and UNESCO, has been created primarily as a tool to assist the ENIC-NARIC Networks in carrying out the tasks they have been mandated to accomplish within their own jurisdiction, by directing them to up-to-date information supplied and maintained by the competent bodies in each member country and by each member organisation. It is also its express purpose to help other interested organisations and individuals easily find information on current issues in international academic and professional mobility, and on procedures for the recognition of foreign qualifications.

elearn Magazine: Design for Online Learning Using a Learner's Perspective Approach

elearn Magazine: Design for Online Learning Using a Learner's Perspective Approach | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

http://elearnmag.acm.org/

For any individual who does instructional design, the challenge falls in the process and the nuances of the process. With the proliferation of online education, the process calls for dynamic and speedy steps because often there is not enough time or resources to waste. However, this type of design process tends to focus more on the teaching than on the learning. The focus on teaching is how content is presented, rather than on how the course design achieves flow for the individual learner. Roderick Sims introduces in his book, Design Alchemy: Transforming the Way We Think About Learning and Teaching, the concept of design for learning—a way for designers to "conceptualize the development process from the learner's perspective rather than that of the content or the teacher." This concept makes the focus on the learning rather on the teacher or content.

John Bostock's insight:

This looks like an interesting book, to help design online courses from the perspective of the learner rather than the instructor.

Open Knowledge Festival 2014

Open Knowledge Festival 2014 | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

To create societies where everyone has both access to key information and the ability to use it to understand and shape their lives, we must build knowledge into the heart of all of our activities. This is a big task which requires not just a global shift in mindset, but also that we build the tools and communities to make such a society possible. We invite you to join us from 15-17 July in Berlin for OKFestival 2014 as we consider how to translate Open Minds to Open Action.

This year, these conversations will be based around three narrative streams; Knowledge, Tools and Society. Each encompasses a broad range of open topics that the community is passionate about, and by building a programme around these three streams, instead of by topic, OKFestival allows for greater collaboration between attendees and shared progress across the entire open movement.

John Bostock's insight:

This looks a good opportunity to explore the open knowledge movement

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

Ibrar Bhatt writes: "Digital curation therefore is not just about finding relevant material, although that is a significant part of it, but is also about creating a specific and unique experience by utilising the resulting materials which then become contextualised within a new space. A curator, therefore, whether she is a journalist-by-proxy such as Popova or a student completing an assignment in a classroom, not only collects and interprets, but also creates a new experience with it. In this respect, curation is a process of problem solving, re-assembling,re-creating, and stewardship of other people’s writing."

School of Open Africa to launch in September - Creative Commons | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

After months of discussions, deliberations, and planning between CC staff, African Regional Coordinators, African Affiliate teams, and others in the open space, Creative Commons Africa is set to storm Africa by having a continent-wide launch for School of Open in September.

School of Open is a global community of volunteers providing free online courses, face-to-face workshops, and innovative training programs on the meaning, application, and impact of “openness” in the digital age. Through School of Open, you can learn how to add a Creative Commons license to your work, find free resources for classroom use, open up your research, remix a music video, and more!

School of Open programs will be launched in Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, and South Africa in September on a series of topics ranging from Creative Commons licensing, intellectual property protection, open society concepts, and the Linux operating system .

Strategic collaborations are underway with the Mozilla Foundation, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, WikiAfrica, University of Lagos, University of Tanzania, and the Institute of Educational Management Technology of the Open University of Tanzania to make the launch a success.

John Bostock's insight:

We already have Ubuntu from Africa - maybe it will soon be the leader in open educational resources as well?

Introduction to mathematical modelling for the environmental and biological sciences

Introduction to mathematical modelling for the environmental and biological sciences | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it

A 5-day course at the University of Stirling, School of Natural Sciences
Monday 16th to Friday 20th February 2015

Designed for PhD students and early-stage researchers with a biological background who wish to develop interdisciplinary skills in mathematical modelling for the life sciences.

The course aims to meet the needs of students in the biological sciences who are increasingly turning to mathematical modelling in the era of big data, the three Rs of animal testing, and remote sensing, but who may lack the background necessary to create their own mathematical or statistical models.

This course, run by mathematicians, physicists and ecologists with experience in epidemiology and terrestrial and marine ecology, will provide an introduction to basic modelling concepts and a guide to using common skills. You will be guided through the key steps of researching the question, formulating the model framework, parameterising the model, and model criticism.

John Bostock's insight:

This is particularly aimed at NERC funded students, but others may be eligible to participate.

Remember the young ones: Improving career opportunities for Britain’s young people | IPPR

Remember the young ones: Improving career opportunities for Britain’s young people | IPPR | Aqua-tnet | Scoop.it
This report looks at five critical elements of the school-to-work transition for young people – the role of employers, vocational education, apprenticeships, careers guidance, and the benefits system – and at lessons the UK can learn from European economies with better youth employment records.

A long period without work at a young age can have a long-lasting effect on a person’s life chances, leading to a higher future likelihood of unemployment and lower future earnings. For this reason, UK policymakers should be particularly worried about the present level of youth unemployment. There are currently 868,000 young people aged 16–24 unemployed in the UK, and 247,000 of them have been looking for work for over a year.

This is not simply due to the financial crash and recession. While the last six or seven years have been particularly tough for the latest generation of young people, even before the financial crisis many of those entering the labour market for the first time were struggling to compete with older workers for jobs. This suggests that even a full-blown economic recovery is unlikely to solve the problem of youth unemployment in the UK.

John Bostock's insight:

Another report from the UK Institute for Policy Research on vocational education and the need for strong engagement between employers and the education system. The UK needs to learn lessons from elsewhere in Europe!
