Esta guía realizada por el centro tecnológico AZTI-Tecnalia (www.azti.es) pretende ser un manual de identificación rápida de las especies que aparecen en los caladeros del golfo de Bizkaia y que son explotados por las distintas flotas (con sus correspondientes modalidades de pesca), con puerto base en la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca. Por supuesto, no refleja todas las especies existentes en la zona sino sólo las que son accesibles a los distintos aparejos, redes y artefactos de pesca utilizados por dichas flotas.

El objetivo primario de esta aplicación es servir de herramienta para una primera aproximación a la diversidad faunística que podemos encontrar a bordo tras las operaciones de pesca y, por lo tanto, no se limita a las especies que presentan un claro interés comercial, sino que tiene intención de recoger información sobre aquellas especies que no son objetivo de nuestros barcos pero que tienen un cierto interés comercial (bycatch) o que son descartadas en su totalidad por no ser aptas para su consumo o comercialización (descartes).

Cada especie está presentada con una cabecera en donde figura el nombre oficial y el código FAO de la especie, el nombre científico, la foto y los nombres comunes si los hay, tanto en euskera como en inglés y francés. A continuación hay unas breves notas sobre la distribución, tanto geográfica como batimétrica y algunos datos sobre hábitat y biología (alimentación, crecimiento y reproducción). Se aportan, así mismo, algunas notas sobre los caracteres distintivos de la especie, la posible confusión y diferenciación con especies similares y el tipo de pesca en la que suele aparecer. Por último, se especifica si es una especie de interés comercial o no y en el margen derecho se presenta su posición taxonómica.

 

AZTI-Tecnalia has presented (for the moment only for Android  terminals) ItsasFish, a new mobile application which aims to be a manual  for the rapid identification of species found in the fishing grounds of  the Bay of Biscay and which are fished by the various fleets (each with  their mode of fishing) based in the Autonomous Community of the Basque  Country or Euskadi (the coast of the Basque provinces of Bizkaia and  Gipuzkoa). Of course, this does not reflect all the existing species in  the zone but only those accessible to the various nets and other fishing  gear used by these fleets. The technological centre is working on 80  new species records, which will be published successively on the  application.

 

The main objective of this application is to act as a tool for an  initial approach to the animal diversity that we can find on board after  such fishing expeditions. Thus, it is not limited to species that have a  clear commercial interest, but also aims to gather information on those  species that, while not being the target of our fishing vessels, do  have a certain commercial interest (bycatch) or are totally discarded as  not being fit for human consumption or commercialisation (discards).

 

Each species is presented with a label providing its official name  and the FAO code of the species, its scientific name in Latin, a  photograph of it and its common names in Basque, English and French.  Then there are some brief notes about its distribution, both geographic  and bathymetric, and certain data on habitat and biology (feeding,  growth patterns and reproduction). Also provided are notes about the  distinctive features of the species, possible confusions that may arise  and the how to differentiate from other, similar species, as well as the  fishing mode with which it is normally caught. Finally, whether it is a  species of commercial interest or not and its taxonomic position are  specified.

Whether free, open educational resources could revolutionize education in aquatic sciences is currently being investigated by MSc candidate Alexandra Pounds. As part of the EU Horizon2020 EURASTIP project with the University of Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture she is looking for educators and students in aquaculture and capture fisheries sciences to help her obtain great results by taking part in her survey. Respondents have the opportunity to enter a raffle for a £50 gift certificate.

“It’s clear that open educational resources have major benefits to society, as do most open communication and educational initiatives. But although OERs are free to use they come with a cost to the developer,” she reflects. As a result, her big question is: besides altruistic intentions, what would motivate higher education institutions and educators in aquaculture to share their materials freely? And how can this be made financially sustainable?

The course will deal with best practice experimental data management, including all aspects from preparing experiment protocols to sharing data. It is based on the experimental data repository system developed in FP7-AQUAEXCEL called bioWES. bioWES is a distributed, knowledge-based repository for large datasets, typically applicable in biological and related sciences. The bioWES scientific data management solution provides full control over experiments, from protocol design, through data acquisition and processing to sharing final results. Participants will learn how to use the bioWES system for their own experimental work, using their own protocols and real experimental data. The aim is that by the end of the course, each participant will be able to install the bioWES system, create his or her own account, create unique experimental protocols based on their own specific needs, store their own experimental data, create connections between experimental protocols, cooperate with colleagues through sharing and visualize the overview of individual project steps. The participants will also be introduced to the special functionality of the system: data processing modules, plugins for communication with measurement devices and standardization support. The course will be organized as an online training with active participation of the users. The organizers will guide the users through every single step of the bioWES system, from installation to sharing of experimental data, during three one and a half hour sessions. The participant will use their own protocols and experimental data to test theoretical knowledge on real examples. The course will be available through standard internet browser for each registered participant. It is believed that the course is particularly useful for researchers involved in AQUAEXCEL2020 TransNational Access (TNA) projects.

ECEL is generally attended by participants from more than 40 countries and attracts an interesting combination of academic scholars, practitioners and individuals who are engaged in various aspects of e-Learning. ErasmusIntern.org is part of STORY project which is a project by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). ESN is a non-profit international student organisation which mission is to represent international students by providing opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development under the principle of Students Helping Students. ESN has more than 13.000 members in local sections all over Europe working on a volunteer base together with Higher Education Institutions and offering services to 180.000 students per year

 

The STORY project has been funded with support of the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission. This project aims at improving the accessibility and quality of international internships, as well as at increasing the awareness on the existence of such opportunities for youth. In order to achieve this, a research on the subject was committed, and this online platform is being developed in order to enhance students’ international opportunities on the European job market.

 

ErasmusIntern.org provides a place where companies and organisations can publish their internship offers and search for interns, and where students that want to do an internship abroad can have their profiles, search and apply for internships vacancies.

This survey-based research is under the University of Stirling's Institute of Aquaculture. The research aims to contribute towards the AQUA-TNET and EURASTIP's initiative on training and education links between Europe and Asia by examining perspectives and use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in aquatic sciences higher education across the world. ​ The survey is exploring the following questions: Would aquatic sciences students & educators benefit from and want to use OERs? Would they be willing to create and openly distribute their own educational materials? What would motivate them to do so? Would institutions benefit from having their own OERs and OER repositories, like MIT OpenCourseWare? If not, why not? If so, what would be the best way for them to do so?

A team composed by the students Yomar Sardón, David Redondo and Anatoly Komendrovskiy has won the Promoting Seafood Consumption competition with a video outlining the characteristics of seafood and the benefits of carrying a healthy and active life.

The video filmed in San Sebastian (Spain) links the choice of seafood to an active life that is enhanced by the healthiness, taste, and crowd-pleasing characteristics of these products. Filmed as publicity spot, the creators will now participate in the “Science-based Competitiveness and Policy Making for the European Seafood Sector” event with the researchers and stakeholders of the PrimeFish project and receive the 1,500 euros prize.

The European Commission has recently been increasing its efforts to identify barriers to learning mobility. It recently published a Mobility Scoreboard, assessing country performance in a number of key areas that support mobility. These include information and guidance, the portability of grants and loans, linguistic preparation for mobility, and recognition of learning outcomes and qualifications – all matters which can stand in the way of a student's ambitions to study abroad. It is to be hoped that an increased focus on these issues will help to ensure wider access to learning mobility, as the experiences and outlook of younger generations will shape the future of Europe. Whichever direction the European Union takes in the coming years, promoting learning mobility must remain one of its central priorities.

Oceans and seas are identified as key drivers for European economic development and, as a result, have the potential to deliver new jobs in the coming years. To exploit the full potential of Blue Growth opportunities multidisciplinary training of graduates across engineering and marine and maritime sciences is essential. This summer school is designed for Master students with different backgrounds. Engineers, bio-engineers, geographers and marine biologists are welcome to subscribe however essential for enrolment is the demonstration of experience in marine and maritime projects. Title: New fields, advances and innovation in aquaculture and fisheries 


Date of course: 04/07/2016 – 09/07/2016 


Course Description: This is a 6-day-long multidisciplinary summer course focusing on new fields, advances and innovation in aquaculture and fisheries. The course involves several topics such as natural and induced reproduction of freshwater fish, cryopreservation, spermatogonia, transplantation, epigenetics and molecular biology of fish species, larva and juvenile rearing of different protected and endangered fish species, such as European eel, breeding, housing and research of Zebrafish in Tecniplast recirculation system, new trends in aquaculture in EU. Additional activities include: a tour to The Fishing Park and Tavern of Akasztó, managing company is ÖKO 2000 Co Ltd; Several laboratory practices (cryopreservation, propagation, spermatogonia isolation, histological methods in practice, water quality parameters); Facultative angling competition between course participants and lecturers of department.


This workshop is organised by the Department of Aquaculture, Szent Istvan University at Gödöllő, Hungary. A certificate of attendance and 3 ECTS credits will be awarded to students who complete the course.

By and large, languages, both as first, second or foreign languages remain one of the most important core subjects at every educational level. In early stages, their inclusion in the curriculum is intricately connected with (pre-)literacy practices, but also as a main driver for the successful integration of minority students learning a second language. In addition, the attainment of a certain level of a foreign language by the end of compulsory education is a common goal in most educational systems around the globe. Arguably, the key drivers of success in learning a language range from motivational to attitudinal, but ultimately they also have to do with the amount of target language use, the access to quality input, and especially language teachers’ readiness to incorporate the latest educational trends effectively in the language classroom, educational technologies amongst them. This special issue features recent developments and innovations in the field of Computed Assisted Language Learning and expects to serve as a springboard for a series of existing innovative practices in the area of technology enhanced language learning and teaching.
