I think there is value in a system that captures skills development evidence on a lifelong basis that many providers could work with. Just because the term 'Badges' is used should not allow it to be trivialised. It could fill a valuable gap that enables employers to find graduates who can meet their immediate and long-term needs. I am following this to see how it works out in practice.
How might education change if Open-Badges become as valuable as a College or University Degree? What about High School? the future of education is moving towards greater individualization while the "Education Systems" move to greater standardization and making the experience the same for all learners. Doesn't this create a conflict?

Digital badges offer students the opportunity to pave their own learning pathways and allow employers to verify necessary workforce skills, according to this report from the Alliance for Excellent Education and the Mozilla Foundation. The report defines digital badges as “credentials that represent skills, interests, and achievements earned by an individual through specific projects, programs, courses, or other activities.” A credible badge stores information online through a digital hyperlink about the associated skills, as well as what projects and tasks the badge holder completed to obtain it. This report explores digital badges and how they can be used to improve student learning and outcomes, as well as expand vocational and interest-based skills for learners of all age.

ESCO is the multilingual classification of European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations. It identifies and categorises skills/competences, qualifications and occupations relevant for the EU labour market and education and training, in 25 European languages. The system provides occupational profiles showing the relationships between occupations, skills/competences and qualifications.
ESCO is the only European standard terminology linking skills and competences and qualifications to occupations and will be available free of charge to all labour market, education institutions and other stakeholders.

Developing human potential has been a persistent EU policy aim even in the recent years of economic crisis. Among the goals of the European Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, Europe 2020, we find employment and innovation, featuring education as a major lever.
European education and training systems are often criticised for not properly responding to social needs, and even that employers, education providers, and youth live in parallel universes. Universities’ reputation often comes from the visible, high level relations with prestigious corporations. E-learning, as a system integrator, may help education providers and employers to actively step into one another’s worlds.
Workplace-based training supported by ICT tools is part of the solution to reduce skill shortages and mismatches. E-learning has become a dominant delivery method in learning settings at work across various sectors and a wide range of company sizes. Its advantages may be many, including flexibility, cost and time savings, and new work habits and improved working climate. ICT-enhanced learning may improve organisational performance and lead to increased staff commitment and the generation of new ideas.
E-learning is often used by companies to inform and educate not only their employees but also customers, as part of their branding and marketing strategy and activities. The conference will explore these themes and issues - call for papers open until 31 January 2014.

New report examining the use of digital badges for adult learners

Badges are becoming more and more usual in certain learning communities, specially those in non-academic environments. But this system for recognition is extending to many other realms. This report explores how and when to introduce them in a very specific area: adult learners.
Esta guía realizada por el centro tecnológico AZTI-Tecnalia (www.azti.es) pretende ser un manual de identificación rápida de las especies que aparecen en los caladeros del golfo de Bizkaia y que son explotados por las distintas flotas (con sus correspondientes modalidades de pesca), con puerto base en la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca. Por supuesto, no refleja todas las especies existentes en la zona sino sólo las que son accesibles a los distintos aparejos, redes y artefactos de pesca utilizados por dichas flotas. El objetivo primario de esta aplicación es servir de herramienta para una primera aproximación a la diversidad faunística que podemos encontrar a bordo tras las operaciones de pesca y, por lo tanto, no se limita a las especies que presentan un claro interés comercial, sino que tiene intención de recoger información sobre aquellas especies que no son objetivo de nuestros barcos pero que tienen un cierto interés comercial (bycatch) o que son descartadas en su totalidad por no ser aptas para su consumo o comercialización (descartes). Cada especie está presentada con una cabecera en donde figura el nombre oficial y el código FAO de la especie, el nombre científico, la foto y los nombres comunes si los hay, tanto en euskera como en inglés y francés. A continuación hay unas breves notas sobre la distribución, tanto geográfica como batimétrica y algunos datos sobre hábitat y biología (alimentación, crecimiento y reproducción). Se aportan, así mismo, algunas notas sobre los caracteres distintivos de la especie, la posible confusión y diferenciación con especies similares y el tipo de pesca en la que suele aparecer. Por último, se especifica si es una especie de interés comercial o no y en el margen derecho se presenta su posición taxonómica.
AZTI-Tecnalia has presented (for the moment only for Android terminals) ItsasFish, a new mobile application which aims to be a manual for the rapid identification of species found in the fishing grounds of the Bay of Biscay and which are fished by the various fleets (each with their mode of fishing) based in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country or Euskadi (the coast of the Basque provinces of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa). Of course, this does not reflect all the existing species in the zone but only those accessible to the various nets and other fishing gear used by these fleets. The technological centre is working on 80 new species records, which will be published successively on the application.
The main objective of this application is to act as a tool for an initial approach to the animal diversity that we can find on board after such fishing expeditions. Thus, it is not limited to species that have a clear commercial interest, but also aims to gather information on those species that, while not being the target of our fishing vessels, do have a certain commercial interest (bycatch) or are totally discarded as not being fit for human consumption or commercialisation (discards).
Each species is presented with a label providing its official name and the FAO code of the species, its scientific name in Latin, a photograph of it and its common names in Basque, English and French. Then there are some brief notes about its distribution, both geographic and bathymetric, and certain data on habitat and biology (feeding, growth patterns and reproduction). Also provided are notes about the distinctive features of the species, possible confusions that may arise and the how to differentiate from other, similar species, as well as the fishing mode with which it is normally caught. Finally, whether it is a species of commercial interest or not and its taxonomic position are specified.

FEAP organised the 2nd edition of 'Aquaculture in Motion', Wednesday 6th of November in Le Méridien Hotel in Brussels. This year the event focussed on the ‘Strategic Guidelines for the Sustainable Development of European Aquaculture’ that were published by the European Commission in April 2013. These Guidelines aim to assist the EU Member States to define national targets while taking account of their circumstances, institutional arrangements and relative positions in terms of aquaculture activities. While the aims to promote aquaculture are intended to be achieved through a voluntary open process of coordination, it is also proposed, where appropriate, that common objectives be identified, alongside measurable indicators for progress.
In providing a focus on the need for quantified targets and relevant indicators, Aquaculture in Motion intends to stimulate the identification of Best Practice for the key performance indicators that need to be agreed as measures of progress and development. Moving European aquaculture forward with successful sustainable strategies was the target of this year’s Aquaculture in Motion.

29 October 2013, Rome – A new FAO publication calls for greater national and international efforts to bring agricultural biotechnologies to smallholder producers in developing countries. The publication, Biotechnologies at Work for Smallholders: Case Studies from Developing Countries in Crops, Livestock and Fish, asserts biotechnologies can help smallholders to improve their livelihoods and food security.Biotechnologies at Work for Smallholders covers 19 case studies in crops, livestock and fisheries, written by scientists and researchers worldwide. It describes the practical realities and experiences of taking biotechnology research and applying it in smallholder production of bananas, cassava, rice, livestock, shrimp and more, in different parts of the developing world
The Scottish Qualifications Authority, (SQA) has announced its intention to investigate the opportunities presented by an innovative approach to displaying individuals’ learning accomplishments online.
SQA is working in partnership with Mozilla, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the democratization of the web, to explore the benefits to learners that can be achieved through their Open Badges.
Mozilla’s Open Badges project intends to make it easy to earn, issue and display digital badges that recognise and communicate individuals’ skills and achievements.
The badge project infrastructure allows individuals to display their real-world skills and achievements in online environments – such as social media profiles – in way that may help with future career and education opportunities.
Joe Wilson, Head of New Ventures at SQA, said: “We believe Mozilla’s Open Badges project enables greater flexibility for learners to demonstrate their achievements. Open badges have the potential to allow individuals to display the accomplishments they make along each step of the learner journey, and receive recognition for a single skill or packages of learning that cover a number of skills in relation to a particular task.”
Joe continued: “SQA will work with Mozilla to explore how we can adopt Open Badges. We will encourage our partners to investigate how they could benefit from adopting open badges to support learners across Scotland in addition to the recognition we offer teachers and college lecturers through our CDP courses and training we will explore how we can integrate open badges into our certification processes.”
Erin Knight, Senior Director of Learning and Badges at Mozilla, said: "We are really excited that SQA, as Scotland's national awarding and accreditation body, is actively exploring how best to implement Open Badges as a means to give learners and institutions the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and accomplishments through digital badges."

Higher education institutions are prodigious content producers. Although there are long-standing policies in place to permit the curation of instructional content and of the transactional artifacts of the learning experience, librarians have traditionally concentrated more attention on research. This stance is quite justifiable given the massive amount of research data being generated today as a result of revised data-planning requirements by grant-funding agencies. However, with the tacit rules governing instruction and with market pressures rapidly evolving, has the time come for librarians to intentionally curate instructional content, in all its unwieldy diversity? And as we come to better understand the lasting value of data analytics, what would be the consequences of inaction?
A very interesting article that raises the issue of ownership and use of teaching materials. It suggests they may increasingly be held by commercial companies (such as Pearson OpenClass) unless university libraries take a more active role in curation, archiving and ensuring accessibility. Add into this debate the rise of Open Educational Resources and you have a very potent set of issues concerning for instance, power, academic freedom, intellectual property rights management, student and teacher privacy......

A checklist to help trainers (and learners) think critically about online resources
This infoKit aims to provide reassurance that the problems faced in your organisation are neither unique nor insurmountable. It does not offer ‘quick fixes’ because there is no easy answer or off-the-shelf solution. There are course information management issues that are endemic in the sector but, as a result of considerable activity in this field during the period 2009-2013, there is now a wealth of experience and good practice on which to draw in solving them.
This is a very interesting link for anyone involved in designing and managing courses (programmes); but is only the tip of the iceberg of resources available via this site. UK focused but many ideas and principles will be relevant anywhere.
The New Zealand Government has created the Aquaculture in Action, web-based educational resource (Aquaculture Fact Sheet) to provide students with meaningful social sciences and science learning opportunities.
To bring the fact sheets into the classroom the resource also includes a teacher’s guide and how the resource links to the New Zealand Curriculum.
The lesson plans were developed for Years 7 through 10.
The plans were created to assist teachers in helping students investigate and learn about aquaculture, as well as its impact on the economy and environment.
This is a great initiative and good example of how aquaculture can be brought into the classroom - just needs a mark 2 version with some video and real sea spray!
