Google reveals it has taken over seven robotics companies and is hiring staff to develop products as part of a team led by its former Android chief.
Mr Bedford's insight:

Google have used mergers and takeovers to "jump start" the robotics department. An obvious case of innovation. Interesting to see the developments in this industry. Google have a "10 year vision", more of an aim at this point than an objective.

Apple purchases PrimeSense, an Israeli firm that specialises in making 3D motion detection technology.
Mr Bedford's insight:

As discussed in previous lessons – Apple purchase smaller, specialist, companies to bring knowledge and expertise to the firm. There is also an element of innovation to this story. Apple are secretive about the reason why they have purchased this company, however it would be sensible to estimate they are attempting to adapt their mobile devices or develop the idea of Apple television. Regulator Ofcom tells Royal Mail it is missing key performance targets, and warns it could be fined if services do not improve.

Royal Mail are missing targets set by Ofcom, these are similar target that we have looked at in "operational objectives". The extra pressure from Ofcom will mean that their operational strategies and tactics will have to change to meet the strict requirements.

Majestic Wine reports a drop in sales but says it is "very well prepared" for the Christmas season, in first-half results.
Mr Bedford's insight:

Although sales have dropped slightly, new stores seem to be doing well. Dividend has been increased and expansion looks likely. I would suggest that Majestic will benefit from purchasing economies of scale with this further expansion. Any other economies of scale they should consider? Is there a risk that diseconomies of scale could creep in?

Johnson & Johnson will pay more than $4 billion to resolve thousands of lawsuits over its recalled hip implants in the largest settlement of U.S. legal claims for a medical device, three people familiar with the deal said.

A great British company are re-locating. The main pull factor seems to be the recent government plans to invest in local infrastructure. The A50 development seem to be enhance the external economies of scale.

Great example of outsourcing and off shoring to help the company become more efficient. Consider how they might go about cutting so many jobs? There are massive HR issues involved.

Toyota has set ambitious innovation targets to release a fuel cell car by 2015. They now have to meet this target. An interesting development for A2 Business Studies. More interesting for the future of eco-friendly travel and lower CO2 emissions.
