The report published by Grunwald Associates and the Learning First Alliance with support from AT&T, found that, according to data from a representative nationwide sample of nearly 2,400 parents, more than four in five K-12 students at least occasionally use some sort of computing device, including mobile devices like tablets or smartphones, or laptop computers.

Designing Mobile Learning in School Contexts – Considerations and Examples for Practice

By now, Mobile Learning has a more than ten‐year long tradition within the field of
educational practice. However, how teaching and learning with mobile technologies is
realised diverges greatly. This article outlines which approaches of learning with mobile
technologies seem to be the most popular, which aspects need to be considered in the
course of planning mobile learning in curricular contexts, and that it is important to pay
attention, among other things, to the knowledge and expertise learners bring with them from their everyday lives.
At a first glance, the use of mobile technologies for learning is not obvious. This is because mobile technologies are commodity items and originally not designed for learning but for entertainment, communication, networking and are sold as lifestyle and consumption items.
At a second glance though, a manifold range of opportunities emerges also for school‐based learning and for the use of mobile technologies for teaching. No standardised concepts exist yet for the systematic use of mobile technologies for teaching and learning. But some tendencies are obvious already: looking at the last ten years of mobile learning practice it is possible to categorise the use of mobile technologies in the classroom and to derive some pointers for lesson planning design from it (see e.g. Seipold 2011; Pachler et al. 2010; Bachmair et al. 2011).

ENHANCING INFORMAL LANGUAGE LEARNING WITH MOBILE TECHNOLOGY – DOES IT WORK?

Abstract.

There are many theories that attempt to explain second language acquisition processes and factors determining success or failure. Despite a lack of general agreement between proponents of these theories, research has convincingly shown that the amount of exposure to target language input is one important predictor of ultimate achievement levels. „Time on task‟ is as important in language learning as it is in many other domains (cf. Reber, 1993) and it is therefore important to identify ways in which this can be increased. An obvious possibility is to encourage learners to engage with (and in) the language outside the classroom. Informal learning, in the sense of learning outside of formal education, has been shown to be a major aspect of adult learning (Cross, 2007) and, given appropriate preparation and support, learners can greatly increase opportunities for learning if they can do so independently. Mobile technologies have obvious potential in this regard. However, is it possible to improve language skills in this way? In this article we report on an exploratory study into the use of cellphones for extensive listening practice. We used input enhancement to draw learners‟ attention to not only the meaning of the materials but also the formal (grammatical) aspects of the input. We found that the use of mobile technology presented a number of challenges and in this study did not result in learners acquiring the target structures. We conclude with a number of recommendations for the use and future study of mobile technologies for (language) learning.

The Educational Potential of Mobile Computing in the Field (EDUCAUSE Quarterly) | EDUCAUSE

The Educational Potential of Mobile Computing in the Field (EDUCAUSE Quarterly) | EDUCAUSE | Aprendizaje móvil. Mobile learning | Scoop.it

Abstract

The 2011 Horizon Report places mobile devices as a top technology to watch for in the coming year. Our article focuses on mobile computing with a tablet PC, drawing from over five years of experience teaching with tablets in outdoor, field-based classes. We discuss three classes Environmental Science, Ecology, and Biology in which we tap the "educational potential of our backyards." Loading mobile tablet PCs with scientific visualization software, classes can be taught outside, field methods demonstrated, and data collected in real time using the tablet's stylus or pen. The technology of mobile computing has broad application in the field sciences. In the field and in the geographic context, patterns emerge and are observed, such as a change in soil-type coinciding with a marked change in vegetation, and data can be reliably verified without waiting to go to a computer lab. This active learning, where students are engaged in a task, exercise, or research question, allows learners to be better able to understand complex relationships and apply what they have learned in other settings and contexts, and using tablet PCs enhances and provides advantages, such as teaching about and improving the scientific method, in this learning environment. Working on a research-based problem, especially one with longitudinal data, provides students an opportunity to interpret findings and integrate information.
