How to Humanize Your Online Class (Infographic and slideshow)

How to Humanize Your Online Class (Infographic and slideshow) | Aprendizaje en línea | Scoop.it
Humanized learning increases the relevance of content and improves students' motivation to log-in week-after-week. When students relate to an online instructor as something more than a subject matter expert and begin to conceive of themselves as part of a larger community, they are more likely to be motivated, be satisfied with their learning, and succeed in achieving the course objectives (Picciano, 2002; Rovai & Barnum, 2003;  Richardson & Swan, 2003).

Is eLearning really gead? Is Instructional Design dying with it?

Is eLearning really gead? Is Instructional Design dying with it? | Aprendizaje en línea | Scoop.it
The shift away from self-paced eLearning means individual instructional designers need to skill up and eLearning companies need to start adopting new technologies and approaches such as gamification, cognitive assessments, game-based learning and virtual reality sooner rather than later. The death of eLearning may be “greatly exaggerated” (to steal from an alleged Mark Twain quote) but the truth is that self-paced eLearning is on the decline. The smart money and smart designers will move toward the newer technologies and approaches.

The power of distance education is in the access and opportunity.

"Instead of worrying whether or not online education can ever be as good as more traditional formats, perhaps we should instead focus on how we can use it to deliver quality education for people all over the world, particularly the poor and underserved."

New Models of Open and Distance Learning

New Models of Open and Distance Learning | Aprendizaje en línea | Scoop.it
Historically most learning that has ever taken place has taken place in a classroom with a teacher giving instruction and students reading books and writing on paper. Though the 20th century, however, more and more learning has been taking place outside the classroom, using technology to reach students at a distance. For example, Australia’s ‘School of the Air’ used wireless radio transmissions to send lessons to children growing up on isolated sheep stations.[ii] And of course institutions like Britain’s Open University became expert providing learning by correspondence.

The first online classes were offered starting in the 1980s and over the last 30 years the internet has been used to offer lessons at all levels all over the world. These new technologies have changed the way educators look at learning. The need to adapt to students working from home and at a distance caused educational institutions to examine their practices more closely.

For example, one of the first technological developments was the ‘course pack’. This was typically a package of printed material containing all the guidance that would normally be provided in class by a teacher: lessons, readings, quizzes. Course packs are still used to this day; the Open University offers them online as part of its OpenLearn initiative.[iii] These packs need to be created ahead of time, so their authors had plan every detail of a distance education class ahead of time. As they did so, their understanding of the process changed.

Optimal Video Length for Student Engagement

Optimal Video Length for Student Engagement | Aprendizaje en línea | Scoop.it
In this first post, I’ll share some preliminary results about video usage, obtained from initial analyses of a few edX math and science courses. Unsurprisingly, students engaged more with shorter videos. Traditional in-person lectures usually last an hour, but students have much shorter attention spans when watching educational videos online.

Yet, educators' urge to "cover the material" seems to get in the way of keeping videos to this level of conciseness. Six minutes guys!!

[eBook] La educación a distancia

[eBook] La educación a distancia | Aprendizaje en línea | Scoop.it

[eBook] Emergence and inovation in Digital Learning: Foundations and applications

[eBook] Emergence and inovation in Digital Learning: Foundations and applications | Aprendizaje en línea | Scoop.it

Educational systems worldwide are facing an enormous shift as a result of sociocultural, political, economic, and technological changes. The technologies and practices that have developed over the last decade have been heralded as opportunities to transform both online and traditional education systems. While proponents of these new ideas often postulate that they have the potential to address the educational problems facing both students and institutions and that they could provide an opportunity to rethink the ways that education is organized and enacted, there is little evidence of emerging technologies and practices in use in online education. Because researchers and practitioners interested in these possibilities often reside in various disciplines and academic departments the sharing and dissemination of their work across often rigid boundaries is a formidable task.

Contributors to Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning include individuals who are shaping the future of online learning with their innovative applications and investigations on the impact of issues such as openness, analytics, MOOCs, and social media. Building on work first published in Emerging Technologies in Distance Education, the contributors to this collection harness the dispersed knowledge in online education to provide a one-stop locale for work on emergent approaches in the field. Their conclusions will influence the adoption and success of these approaches to education and will enable researchers and practitioners to conceptualize, critique, and enhance their understanding of the foundations and applications of new technologies.
