Using Moodle: Moodle.org theme seems broken for IE 9

Is it just me, or is the moodle.org site bunged? I'm running W7/IE9.0.8, and the pages are no longer rendering prettily. No problem with Chrome (no text editor tools, of course, but everything else seems OK), and Firefox is OK too. Just IE display is bunged. Maybe it's me? My own Moodle site (2.2.5/IIS 7.5) renders fine as well.

Coursera offers free, online courses to people around the world, but if you live in Minnesota, company officials are urging you to log off or head for the border.

The state’s Office of Higher Education has informed the popular provider of massive open online courses, or MOOC’s, that Coursera is unwelcome in the state because it never got permission to operate there. It’s unclear how the law could be enforced when the content is freely available on the Web, but Coursera updated its Terms of Service to include the following caution:

Teachers have long since tired of the traditionally ineffective professional development (PD) models that have been forced upon them. For most teachers, PD looks something like this: teachers show up in the morning, are told exactly what they’re going to learn that day (whether it’s relevant to their practice or not), and then sit and listen to an administrator or high-priced consultant from far away tell them all about how they need to change their teaching. These presentations are usually one-off events, without continuity across the semesters and years. All too often they have no impact on teacher practice.

Pearson, which two years began tiptoeing into the market of helping colleges and universities take their academic programs online, jumped in with both feet Tuesday by purchasing EmbanetCompass, the biggest player in that space. The deal, which awaits regulatory approval, is worth $650 million, officials of the companies said.

The publisher-turned-learning company's expansion is the third major development this week in an increasingly crowded market place, following Blackboard's announcement that it too would begin offering “online program management services” and the purchase of Deltak by John Wiley & Sons.

68% of students reported that their teachers were effectively using technology, up from 47% in 2010.

75% of students said that technology helped them achieve their academic goals, but only 66% felt prepared to use that needed technology when they entered college.

70% of students report that they learn best in a blended learning environment.

50+% of students responded that they are more actively engaged in classes that use technology, but they wish their instructors used more open educational resources, simulations, and games.

Between 2008 and 2012, there was a 107% increase in the number of students who took a class completely online.

The Apollo Group on Tuesday announced that it was closing 90 of the University of Phoenix's satellite learning centers and 25 of its campuses, leaving 112 remaining locations. The closures are part of a "re-engineering initiative" that the company said will help the bottom line by 2014. About 13,000 students, or 4 percent of those pursuing degrees at Phoenix, will be affected by the shuttering of locations. But those students will continue to be served online and at alternative sites, according to the company.

Neuroscientists from New York University and the University of California, Irvine have isolated the “when” and “where” of molecular activity that occurs in the formation of short-, intermediate-, and long-term memories. Their findings, which appear in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offer new insights into the molecular architecture of memory formation and, with it, a better roadmap for developing therapeutic interventions for related afflictions.

“Our findings provide a deeper understanding of how memories are created,” explained the research team leader Thomas Carew, a professor in NYU’s Center for Neural Science and dean of NYU’s Faculty of Arts and Science. “Memory formation is not simply a matter of turning molecules on and off; rather, it results from a complex temporal and spatial relationship of molecular interaction and movement.”

Neuroscientists have previously uncovered different aspects of molecular signaling relevant to the formation of memories. But less understood is the spatial relationship between molecules and when they are active during this process.

To address this question, the researchers studied the neurons in Aplysia californica, the California sea slug. Aplysia is a model organism that is quite powerful for this type of research because its neurons are 10 to 50 times larger than those of higher organisms, such as vertebrates, and it possesses a relatively small network of neurons—characteristics that readily allow for the examination of molecular signaling during memory formation. Moreover, its coding mechanism for memories is highly conserved in evolution, and thus is similar to that of mammals, making it an appropriate model for understanding how this process works in humans.

The scientists focused their study on two molecules, MAPK and PKA, which earlier research has shown to be involved in many forms of memory and synaptic plasticity—that is, changes in the brain that occur after neuronal interaction. But less understood was how and where these molecules interacted.

 

The study’s other co-authors were Xiaojing Ye, a postdoctoral fellow in NYU’s Center for Neural Science, Andreea Marina, an undergraduate at UC Irvine at the time of the study. The research was conducted at NYU’s Center for Neural Science and UC Irvine’s Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory.

This work was supported by grants RO1 MH 041083 and RO1 MH 081151 from the National Institute of Mental Health, part of the National Institutes of Health, and a grant IOB-0444762 from the National Science Foundation.

La Revista tiene como finalidad publicar productos intelectuales y resultados de investigación derivados del académico en equipo, que expresen la integración inter, multi y transdisciplinariedad en la producción y gestión del conocimiento y la información.
