University of Phoenix faces possible probation by accreditor | Inside Higher Ed

University of Phoenix faces possible probation by accreditor | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

The University of Phoenix’s accreditation woes are more serious than the for-profit giant had been told to expect, with a site team from its regional accreditor recommending last week that the university be placed on probation because of concerns about a lack of autonomy from its holding company, the Apollo Group.

The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools last year wrapped up its accreditation review of Phoenix. In January the accreditor informed Apollo that it had identified unspecified problems that would be disclosed in a forthcoming draft report. Company officials told investors that it would probably be placed “on notice,” a less severe penalty than probation.

But the report, which Apollo received last week, surprised company officials and industry analysts alike. It described “alleged administrative and governance deficiencies” that led to the call for probationary status, according to a corporate filing Apollo released Monday.

Contributions to e-Learning from a Best Practices Study at Andalusian Universities

The presence and development of ICTs in higher education is ever greater, and so are the efforts that universities everywhere have been making to incorporate them into areas such as management, research and teaching. It is within this context that the study presented in this article falls. The main objectives of the study were stated in the following terms: a) To identify how lecturers who were recognised for their best practices in e-learning made use of such practices; b) To ascertain the technical, didactic and organisational problems that they found when incorporating this teaching-learning modality; and c) To analyse the characteristics of the materials that were designed for that purpose.

To do that, several data collection strategies were used, such as lecturer bios, individual lecturer interviews, an analysis of materials, and a group student interview.

The results allowed a number of conclusions to be drawn, such as positive lecturer and student attitudes towards e-learning in general and towards blended learning in particular. Both the lecturers and the students highlighted their usefulness, the flexibility they allow, and the increase in student involvement and participation. Likewise, the need for both the lecturers and the students to have didactic training was identified, as was the urgent need to set up units and services to assist teaching staff with the use of tools, with the design of materials and with the resources available. Finally, the implementation of blended learning was found to increase the students’ academic performance.

University e-Portfolios as a New Higher Education Teaching Method. The Development of a Multimedia Educational Material (MEM)

The new European university context requires a methodological and evaluative shift towards active didactic, socio-constructive and investigative perspectives that are student-centred. This study describes the learning setting, the results and the conclusions of an innovative practical exercise carried out by first-year students on two different degree courses at an Andalusian university, using e-portfolios set up for group work and implemented through an edublog. The study's main aim is to establish the most significant achievements, problems and evidence that emerge from this didactic group project. The project includes the design and implementation of a multimedia educational material (MEM), and involves the students in didactic planning and self-assessment processes. The conclusions show that the e-portfolio is a didactic method that fully integrates teaching, learning and assessment into a continuum by allowing students to work together didactically on such aspects. This methodological alternative also greatly helps the lecturer in his/her understanding of the students' learning processes, the working methods of his/her classes, the problems associated with team working, the information sources that students use, and the tutoring and learning-assessment processes. Lastly, the e-portfolio enables the future social educators' levels of didactic comprehension and professional-competency acquisition to be gauged.

Dimensions of Perceived Service Quality in Higher Education Virtual Learning Environments

Virtual learning environments (VLEs) make intensive use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to underpin the delivery of basic higher education institution functions (teaching, administrative procedures, materials distribution, etc.), and are a characteristic feature of today’s educational context. The spread of e-learning and of competence in this field has given rise to growing concerns about the quality of this service. It is therefore vital to develop systems, models and scales that allow institutions to obtain valid, reliable and consistent measurements of the quality of educational services provided by means of VLEs. That is the basic aim of the work described in this article. Taking the literature on perceived service quality (PSQ) as its point of reference, and also a holistic approach to educational services, it presents a scale model that allows PSQ in such environments to be measured. The scale is formed by 24 items grouped into four dimensions: core business (teaching), facilitative or administrative services, support services and user interface.
