If social media was horse race then you might as well put down the glasses as the race has been won. The dominance of Facebook is well known but it is the scale of its growth, market share and time it takes from its users is what is intriguing.

Curate Educational Content Discovery and Collection with instaGrok Search

Robin Good: InstaGrok is a web-based app that makes it easy to find relevant information on a specific topic, and to collect the bits that are of most value to you.

InstaGrok presents itself with a search interface in which the results are represented as a dynamic mindmap whose nodes can be explored by simply clicking on them.

In addition, on the right side of the screen Instagrok provides an aggregated selection of:

a) key facts

b) educational web sites articles on the topic

c) video clips

d) images

e) quizzes

f) glossaries

Any information item in these sections can be easily collected and stored inside your personal Journal, an automatic bibliography-builder which captures any and all of your peferred items.

Key facts, web site content, glossaries, images and video sections offer lots of useful materials instantly, while I am a bit more skeptical about the value and effectiveness of quizzes.

Though the interface leaves lots to be desired and has a typical "academic" feel, the content and results that were offered me in my tests were quite good and the use of pins to build an annotated journal of resource son a topic seems to me to be very effective.

Free to use.

Inquire — An Intelligent Textbook

Inquire — An Intelligent Textbook | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Inquire is an iPad app that combines the popular Campbell Biology textbook with a knowledge representation and reasoning system that answers students’ questions about the material.

Science textbooks are complex and intimidating: a typical college-level biology textbook introduces thousands of new concepts and tens-of-thousands of relationships between them. By providing quick, factual answers and repeatedly exposing students to the patterns of comparing and relating concepts that are fundamental to human learning, Inquire addresses this challenge head-on.

Inquire is part of an ongoing research project and is not yet available as a product. Inquire is funded by Vulcan Inc. and developed at SRI International.

10 Up-And-Coming Cities That Are Disrupting Education | Edudemic

10 Up-And-Coming Cities That Are Disrupting Education | Edudemic | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Nearly every nation in the world would like to bring in the best and brightest scholars to its schools (and hopefully tap into some of that genius in their economy), but not all have the resources or the facilities to do so.

While the U.S. and Europe still dominate many of the lists of top universities, other nations, even some smaller ones, are working hard to provide some serious international competition, building massive education cities and cutting-edge universities that are designed to bring in students from all over the world.

While some still have a long way to go, others are proving that top-tier higher education is going to be a far more global game in the coming decades. We highlight just a few of these cities and their impressive educational offerings in this list.

onlinecourselady / plagiarism

onlinecourselady / plagiarism | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Wiki edited by Laura Gibbs.

In my experience, people usually don't consciously decide to plagiarize, but they may end up plagiarizing "by accident" because they run out of time, or they get confused about the assignment, or maybe they copy-and-paste, intending to go back and edit later but forgetting to do so. Every time that I have seen plagiarism in an assignment, the person swore that the plagiarism happened "by accident." That does not change the fact of the matter: plagiarism, even when it happens by accident, is still plagiarism, and the consequences are serious. It's like when you are caught speeding or running a red light: it doesn't matter if you did not know you were speeding or if you did not notice the red light - you are still going to get a ticket.

From Friendster To Facebook – Social Media And The Internet 10 Years Later [INFOGRAPHIC] | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Back in 2002, the internet had 569 million users – 9.1 percent of the global population – who spent, on average, just 46 minutes a day online. Today, that figure is up to 2.27 billion, – one in every third person worldwide – spending an average of four hours a day.
