Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 30, 2013 11:51 PM

There are many learning models that we may explore, and this one is presented a bit differently than others I have seen. Quoting from the post "The goal of the model is simple enough–not pure academic proficiency, but instead authentic self-knowledge, diverse local and global interdependence, adaptive critical thinking, and adaptive media literacy."

There are nine domains in this model (listed below) and the post provides additional information.

* Five Learning Actuators

* Changing Habits

* Transparency

* Self-Initiated Transfer

* Mentoring and Community

* Changing Roles

* Climate of Assessment

* Thought and Abstraction

* Expanding Literacies

Survey finds that business executives aren't focused on the majors of those they hire | Inside Higher Ed

Survey finds that business executives aren't focused on the majors of those they hire | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Business executives care more about their new hires' thinking, communication and problem-solving skills than they do about their undergraduate majors, according to a survey being released today by the Association of  American Colleges and Universities. The association first conducted the survey in 2006, and has done so periodically since then.

The report, entitled "It Takes More Than a Major: Employer Priorities for College Learning and Student Success," features the percentage of business executives responding positively to a number of statements, and the results suggest that these employers are not just looking for STEM majors -- or for any one kind of major.

Best Practices in Designing Online Courses

This document, along with the accompanying examples, was created to help LPC faculty design online courses that are instructionally and pedagogically sound. The best practices are a synthesis of strategies, activities, design techniques, organizational tips, etc., that have been successful in higher education. They have been approved by the LPC Distance Education Committee and have been made available to all current and future LPC online instructors.

To discuss any of the best practices, log into Blackboard, go to the BOLT course, and post to the Discussion Board forum called Best Practices (LPC).

Important: In addition to the best practices below, instructors are highly encouraged to create an information page for their course. The information page (click here to view an example) is a page that is linked to your course listing on the online course offerings page of the Online Learning web site. It is intended to give prospective students a very clear idea of what your course is about, how it operates, what types of activities are required, what the expectations are, etc., prior to the student registering for it. For more information about the information page, contact Scott Vigallon.

Free Technology for Teachers: Ten Good Video Sources for Science Students and Teachers

Free Technology for Teachers: Ten Good Video Sources for Science Students and Teachers | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

"One of the great things about teaching today is the wealth of educational videos that are available on the web. No longer do we have to flip through catalogs, order a VHS cassette, wait for it to arrive, and hope that it is as good as the catalog made it sound. Now we can quickly access and screen educational videos. In fact, there is so much available that the challenge is sifting through it all."

Richard Byrne has put together a great list of 10 websites that provide excellent videos for science. Sites include:

* The Spangler Effect from Steve Spangler Science (demonstrations of science experiments)

* Gooru - a website that has been mentioned in this Scoop.it. "Gooru is a service that aims to provide teachers and students with an extensive collection of videos, interactive displays, documents, diagrams, and quizzes for learning about topics in math and science." If you have not taken the opportunity to check out Gooru it is worth your time.

* MIT Tech TV which has thousands of videos.

More information on these sites and seven additional sites is available in the post!

Learner Voice Literature Review : JISC

Learner Voice Literature Review : JISC | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

JISC and the Higher Education Academy commissioned a short literature review to provide a greater understanding of the ways in which learners, whether or not in formal education, use online resources to aid their learning experiences and the factors which influence the selection of resources.  The resultant report provides a basis for additional work being commissioned by the Academy and JISC to examine the potential contribution open educational resources can make to the student learning experience.  It is hoped that collectively this work will enable practitioners, policy makers and researchers to adopt more effective evidence-informed or research-informed approaches to their decision-making, research and practice on matters relating to the use of open-educational resources in learning and teaching.
