Organizing your personal research library and compiling bibliographies

Organizing your personal research library and compiling bibliographies | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

A key aspect of scholarship is how you create a personal research library, find and access your sources when needed, and cite them accurately and comprehensively. Patrick Dunleavy explains how the (relatively new) software Mendeley has transformed his previous time-consuming practice in just a few days, and solved numerous other problems of accessing literature and sources wherever he is. Mendeley can offer all academics and PhDs massive productivity gains.

Udacity Cancels Free Online Math Course, Citing Low Quality - Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Udacity Cancels Free Online Math Course, Citing Low Quality - Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Udacity, a start-up company offering free online courses, last week canceled a course, “Logic and Discrete Mathematics,” that was due to begin this summer, saying the lectures and materials it had prepared on the topic did not live up to its quality standards.

“We recorded the entire class and edited most of it, but in our internal tests it didn’t meet our quality bar,” said Sebastian Thrun, founder of Udacity, in an e-mail interview on Sunday. “We have an enormous respect for our students’ time and don’t want to release anything that wouldn’t meet our bar.”

Hispanic Student Enrollments Reach New Highs in 2011

Hispanic Student Enrollments Reach New Highs in 2011 | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

For the first time, the number of 18- to 24-year-old Hispanics enrolled in college exceeded 2 million and reached a record 16.5% share of all college enrollments. 2 Hispanics are the largest minority group on the nation’s college campuses, a milestone first achieved last year (Fry, 2011). But as their growth among all college-age students continues to outpace other groups, Hispanics are now, for the first time, the largest minority group among the nation’s four-year college and university students. And for the first time, Hispanics made up one-quarter (25.2%) of 18- to 24-year-old students enrolled in two-year colleges.

Remediation may serve useful purposes, study finds | Inside Higher Ed

Remediation may serve useful purposes, study finds | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Remedial courses fail to prepare students for college-level work, but the remedial track may serve other purposes, according to a study newly released by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
The research found that being placed into remediation is not as discouraging for students as conventional wisdom holds. And while remedial courses’ primary effect is as a sorting mechanism for students of differing academic abilities -- rather than as preparation or discouragement -- that purpose shouldn’t be overlooked, according to the researchers.

I am designing a class that I am going to teach next year. It is going to have elements of being flipped or simply blended. In any case, I am looking into different ways in which I can assess student learning that goes on during semester, whether in the classroom or out.

New Personalized Music Discovery Site: Hipset | TechCrunch | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article on TechCrunch:

"Hipset is a music discovery site launching today that makes sure you never miss the hot new songs, videos, and other content from the artists you Like on Facebook — updates which the social network might not show in your feed.

The site launched this morning so you can go check it out Hipset now. Once you auth in with Facebook, you’ll find a single Pinterest-style grid view of all the recent posts by all the musicians you Like. That’s something you can’t get on Facebook, which deems most updates from musicians less critical than those by your friends so they’re filtered out of the feed.

In case you’re looking for a laid-back reel of concert clips and studio performances you can sort Hipset by content type, plus you can view dedicated pages for any artist. There’s also a popular feed where you can see algorithmic and human-curated picks for the best new music..."

Study examines contradictions that define today's young people | Inside Higher Ed

Study examines contradictions that define today's young people | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Colleges and employers have their work cut out for them in helping today's young people navigate the fast-changing economic and technological environment in which they are coming of age, given their often-conflicting attitudes and traits, a new book argues.

The book, Generation on a Tightrope: A Portrait of Today’s College Student (Jossey Bass), uses surveys of students and college officials, interviews from campus visits, and other data to characterize the current crop of college-age Americans as confounded by a series of contradictions -- and, in turn, often confounding to parents, colleges and employers trying to understand them. Coming of age in the deepest recession in 70 years, yet eager for the economic opportunities their parents enjoyed. In a hurry to be grownups, but more dependent on the adults around them than any modern generation. Global citizens in theory, but ignorant of other cultures. Always in touch, but hampered in face-to-face communication. And perhaps most importantly, digital natives, but maneuvering in a still-largely-analog world.

OracleDaily » Blackboard’s New Platform Strategy

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the BbWorld conference and conduct a private interview with Chief Technology Officer and President of Academic Platforms Ray Henderson.1 What I learned is that the company is embarking on a fairly radical, high-risk/high-reward strategy of re-architecting both their platform and their business model. The implications of what they are attempting are much larger than you might infer from the press releases.
