College Board’s New President Sees ‘Walls That Must Come Down’ - Head Count - The Chronicle of Higher Education

College Board’s New President Sees ‘Walls That Must Come Down’ - Head Count - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Miami—On Wednesday, members of the College Board heard from their new president, an ambitious education reformer who cites Kant and Rousseau, who hails standards and rigor, and who, much like the nonprofit organization he now leads, defies easy categorization.

In a 75-minute speech here at the College Board’s annual conference, David Coleman described his vision for the nonprofit group’s future, which may well include changes to its signature product—the SAT. Mr. Coleman suggested that the College Board would play a larger role in preparing students to succeed well before they reach high school. And he closed with a surprising flourish, asking his audience to read a passage from the autobiography of Martha Graham, the late dancer and choreographer.

HACU Urges Institutional Leaders to be Proactive, Scrutinize Programs - Higher Education

HACU Urges Institutional Leaders to be Proactive, Scrutinize Programs - Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON — Despite record levels of enrollment among Latinos in higher education, institutional leaders must create a “culture of evidence” in order to advance Latino student success.

That was the heart of message delivered this weekend by Dr. Frank Sanchez, vice chancellor for student affairs at The City University of New York (CUNY).

“It’s not just collecting data and analyzing data,” Sanchez said Saturday during a speech titled “Latino Student Success: Evidence Informing Policies & Practices.”

“We have to disseminate our data to the campus community, and then we have to determine where we can take action,” Sanchez said. “This is going to have to be a standard practice.”

Microsoft Introduces Office 365 for Higher Ed - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Microsoft Introduces Office 365 for Higher Ed - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Not to be outdone by the cloud services offered by Google and others, Microsoft has been working on offerings like Office Live (which I wrote about in 2010) and Office 365 (which the New York Times covered in 2011). These services are designed to let users access and edit cloud-based documents, spreadsheets, and presentations from any device with a connection to the Internet and to collaborate on these files simultaneously with other users. And as Microsoft attempts to stay competitive with its mobile devices, introduces a new operating system (or two), and starts selling a new tablet device, cloud-based tools are going to be more and more important.

Last week, Microsoft announced Office 365 University, a cloud-based service to be made available to students, faculty, and staff at colleges and universities. The company says that the service is scheduled to become “[a]vailable in the first quarter of 2013,” and will be free for higher ed users who have purchased Office University 2010 or Office University for Mac 2011. (However, later in that same announcement a price of $1.67 per month is specified, which is still pretty good, but not as good as free).

Free Technology for Teachers: Symbolab - A Scientific Equation Search Engine | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Symbolab is a new search engine designed for mathematicians and scientists. The search engine is a semantic search engine which means that rather than just searching the text of your query Symabolab attempts to interpret and search for the meaning of your query. What this means is that when you type in an equation you will get results as links and get results as graphs when appropriate. Think of it Symbolab as a cross between Google and Wolfram Alpha.

Video – 7 Skills students need for their future

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard’s Change Leadership Group has identified what he calls a “global achievement gap,” which is the leap between what even our best schools are teaching, and the must-have skills of the future: * Critical thinking and problem-solving * Collaboration across networks and leading by influence * Agility and adaptability * Initiative and entrepreneurialism * Effective oral and written communication * Accessing and analyzing information * Curiosity and imagination.

A Tech Geek on Why We Need the Humanities | Input/Output | Big Think

A Tech Geek on Why We Need the Humanities | Input/Output | Big Think | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Nationwide, as a result of America’s dismal performance on global measures of math and science education, there’s a billion-dollar push for STEM education: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math. As with all educational reform movements, this one is set to throw the baby out with the bathwater, steamrolling over those curricular areas that don’t fit the acronym and aren’t so easily quantified – i.e. the arts and humanities. Uninformed by the human empathy and awareness that are the raison d’etre of these disciplines, technology is ethically neutral at best, anti-human at worst. But with the liberal arts as its animating spirit, technology’s potential benefits are limitless.

INFOGRAPHIC: The Rise Of e-Reading

INFOGRAPHIC: The Rise Of e-Reading | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Our infographic today, courtesy of Schools.com, examines the rise of eReading and whether books are going to become a rare endangered species. Apparently 43% of Americans over the age of 16 read an eBook in 2011. And worldwide, the numbers are slowly rising too, with Kindle predictably leading the pack. This is probably because Kindle books can be read on not only a Kindle, but also on iPads, iPhones, Android, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry, and the web itself.
