Professor Builds Tool That Automatically Grades Writing Assignments | Edudemic | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
- Teachers can assign online essays through the web tool.

- Students then write their essays.

- Using what can only be assumed is magic, SAGrader quickly analyzes and offers feedback in a few seconds.

- Students are then able to take the feedback and fine-tune their essays to improve them.

According to the website, SAGrader uses artificial intelligence to analyze, track, and grade essays. It is able to know if a student (or really anyone writing an essay) comprehends, identifies, and organizes the lessons meant to be taught in the exercise.

Report: Students On Facebook Study 10 Times Less Than Non-Users | Edudemic | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
We all know that as students progress through their school years, their homework load increases. Fifteen year olds may look longingly back to when they were ten and had a whole lot less work to do at home. According to the handy infographic below, the average 6-8 year old spends 9 hours per week studying, vs. 14 hours per week for college students. That doesn’t seem so awful, especially when you consider that the average student spends 4.39 hours per day watching television.

Online learning group hears from MOOC pioneer | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
The men and women who attend the Sloan Consortium's annual meeting have been toiling in the fields of online learning for many years, so they could be forgiven for having a wee bit of skepticism (if not resentment) about "MOOC mania," the hubbub of hyper-attention that has been paid in recent months to the massive open online courses developed by Harvard, MIT, Stanford and other elite universities.
"MOOCS will change the world and make the rest of higher education obsolete. Hyper-prestigious universities are driving all the change. Umm, I don't think so, folks," Jack Wilson, president emeritus of the University of Massachusetts system and Distinguished Professor of Higher Education, Emerging Technologies, and Innovation at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, said during the conference's opening plenary Wednesday afternoon.

Medical Education Matters: Lecturing for learning

It’s that time of year again! Lecture halls are filling with eager new learners and those a little less keen, having been there before. Lecturers blow the dust of their slides (symbolically, if not actually) and start a process of refreshing materials, in order to show that they are absolutely up to date, have read all the right journals and are ‘experts in their field’. Lectures are undoubtedly good for the lecturer’s learning, but what about the often passive recipients of their academic prowess, beautifully displayed on power-points up and down the country?
Are lectures good for learners’ learning? What is the nature of the relationship between ‘a good lecture’ and ‘good learning’?

The Evolution of Augmented Reality Applications for Education and Instructional Use | Emerging Education Technology

Wikipedia defines Augmented Reality (AR) as, “a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data”. This is broader than my original interpretation, but it makes sense – AR can consist of the cool ‘pop up’ information and visuals that can overlay a view of a place or object (you may have seen these on TV as this technique is increasingly common in commercials), but it can also include 3D modelling, global positioning data, and much more.
