8 Must See TED Talks for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

8 Must See TED Talks for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

You can learn as deep and profound insights from these talks as when reading a non-fiction book. I know we all have our time constraints that would not allow us to sit in front of an iPad or computer for 20 minutes watching a talk but there is always snatches of time to do it particularly in the weekends.

50 Core Documents | Teaching American History

50 Core Documents | Teaching American History | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Our list of 50 Core Documents invites teachers and citizens alike to join in this American political dialogue. And because these documents can help citizens better understand the true principles of liberty and acquire the prudence needed to apply them in the varying circumstances of American politics, we consider them to be essential reading for high school students, who will have the responsibility of sustaining and administering our republic in the future.

50 of the most important primary source documents for the #social studies classroom
cameron kopp's curator insight, November 13, 2013 4:19 PM

This is a very cool site which contains 50 documents from American History.  I would use this in my history classroom because many of this documents are covered, and necessary in a high school history class.  I would use this site to study some of the documents with the students, as well as a reference that the students can go back to outside of the classroom.

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Preparing for STEM Lessons on Coding with Hopscotch for iPad

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Preparing for STEM Lessons on Coding with Hopscotch for iPad | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

"This evening I’ve been playing with the free iPad app “Hopscotch,” which I’m planning to use for a four part / two week introductory unit on coding on the iPad with my 4th and 5th grade STEM students. (@iesSTEM) I’ve worked quite a bit with Scratch software from MIT, but this is my first time to “seriously play” with Hopscotch. Hopscotch is similar to Scratch, as a block-based (or icon-based) programming environment, but it is MUCH more limited with fewer available coding blocks. Despite these limitations, it appears to be a great app to use when introducing students to coding. And, it’s FREE! Since I have an iPad cart to use with students in my STEM classroom, but not full-day access to one of our school’s Windows-based computer labs, an iPad-based coding solution / app like Hopscotch is preferable for me now over Scratch. (Scratch is still flash-based, so although it’s web-based it doesn’t work completely on iPads. I’ve tried using Scratch on flash-friendly iPad browser apps like iSwifter and Puffin, but haven’t found the experience very good… yet.)"

Games for 21st Century Learning | SingTeach | Education Research for Teachers

Games for 21st Century Learning | SingTeach | Education Research for Teachers | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Games are being used in classrooms not just because they are fun. If designed well, they can foster deeper and broader learning in our students.

“Life is more fun if you play games,” wrote Roald Dahl, a British novelist and author of children’s books. Learning has become a lot more fun too for students as more educators are using games in their classrooms.

Why are they doing so? Fun is only part of the reason. Dr Mingfong Jan, a Research Scientist at NIE, tells us that well-designed games not only enliven the classrooms, but also engage students in deeper learning.

Teacher Agency: Educators Moving from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset

Teacher Agency: Educators Moving from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

It is a myth that we operate under a set of oppressive bureaucratic constraints. In reality, teachers have a great deal of autonomy in the work they chose to do in their classrooms. In most cases it is our culture that provides the constraints. For individual teachers, trying out new practices and pedagogy is risky business and both our culture, and our reliance on hierarchy, provide the ideal barriers for change not to occur.

Great post that highlights how educators, not just students, can be guilty of being stuck in a fixed mindset and how to revert your thinking back to one of a growth mindset.
