Isaac Asimov's 1964 Predictions About 2014 Are Frighteningly Accurate

Isaac Asimov's 1964 Predictions About 2014 Are Frighteningly Accurate | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
In 1964, famed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov ventured a guess at what you might find if you set foot inside the 2014 World’s Fair. Using his gift for envisioning future technology, Asimov’s predictions from 50 years out are both stunningly accurate and perhaps a little bit depressing. Here’s a look at what he got right.

MOOC completion rates

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have the potential to enable free university-level education on an enormous scale. A concern often raised about MOOCs is that although thousands enrol for courses, a very small proportion actually complete the course. The release of information about enrollment and completion rates from MOOCs appears to be ad hoc at the moment - that is, official statistics are not published for every course. This data visualisation draws together information about enrollment numbers and completion rates from across online news stories and blogs.

The interactive data map helps you see completion rates at a clance. Most courses covered in this graphic had less than a 10% completion rate.

Readers with Mooc completion data are invited to contribute to this research.

terrymc's curator insight, October 10, 2013 7:12 AM

I think there is value in a system that captures skills development evidence on a lifelong basis that many providers could work with. Just because the term 'Badges' is used should not allow it to be trivialised. It could fill a valuable gap that enables employers to find graduates who can meet their immediate and long-term needs. I am following this to see how it works out in practice.

Dr. David Gentile's curator insight, October 15, 2013 11:40 AM

How might education change if Open-Badges become as valuable as a College or University Degree? What about High School? the future of education is moving towards greater individualization while the "Education Systems" move to greater standardization and making the experience the same for all learners. Doesn't this create a conflict?

Developing e-Communities

Developing  e-communities does not happen by accident, rather it is fostered. This is normally done through an e-moderator. One of the roles of the  e-moderators is to encourage  and support the development of the e-community. This role is particularly important at the start of a course since the e-community won’t necessarily be very active and the moderator’s role is to get things moving. If they do a good job, then in many ways their role becomes less important as the e-community develops, something highlighted by Gilly Salmon in her book e-tivities [1]. However, e-moderators still need to oversee the community and keep the interest going.

Making the Switch: Students and Faculty Talk Canvas and Blackboard

According to John Bansavich, director of learning technologies, the University chose to implement Canvas on campus after conducting a yearlong review of the program that involved both instructors and students. He further added that Canvas is different than Blackboard because of its innovative features, and it was perceived as a much easier and more user-friendly platform for instructors and students to use. “The benefits of Canvas over Blackboard are numerous,” Bansavich said. Canvas is not only the source for syllabi, the grade book, and calendar but it also now includes a Speed Grader, a tool that allows instructors to grade more efficiently, provide comments on student work, and maximize their time by reducing repetitive tasks such as restating comments through word documents and then through Blackboard. It keeps all documentations through one outlet, explained Bansavich.

What I like in this list, that is presented in alphabetical order, has a nice mix of subjects and grade levels that teachers can use with their students.
