The Clash of Epistemologies: A Study of the Transformative Learning of Bilingual Pre-service Teachers Engaged in Simulations in a Virtual Environment

The Clash of Epistemologies: A Study of the Transformative Learning of Bilingual Pre-service Teachers Engaged in Simulations in a Virtual Environment | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
The entrenched epistemologies of pre-service teachers were challenged when they encountered a new way to learn using virtual reality.  This mixed methods study examined the extent to which pre-service teachers were willing to transform their views of knowledge.  Transformative Learning Theory (Mezirow, 2000) scrutinizes how adults learn, and so it was the lens used for determining epistemic change.  Data collection was accomplished with two online instruments that represented mixed data sets.  Past epistemologies clashed with new ones as participants considered how their past experiences could be reconciled given new learning tools. Findings indicated that most participants exhibited some transformation despite the fact that the initial disorienting dilemma was seemingly insurmountable. These transformations were only possible for those who were able to find value and motivation in their learning experiences, as well as discern a positive change in themselves as learners and as future teachers.

Innovations in Education - Thoughts on Defining Innovation in Education

Innovations in Education - Thoughts on Defining Innovation in Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

I’ve been doing some thinking about how to best define innovation in education.  I’ve been reading a lot of mission statements lately for schools and districts and keep finding the word “innovative” used, yet little sign of practices in the objectives, tactics and goals to back this up. The tactics  and action plan seem to be oriented towards producing test scores and the practices seem 20th century at best.

Security risks and protection in online learning: A survey | Chen | The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning

This paper describes a survey of online learning which attempts to determine online learning providers’ awareness of potential security risks and the protection measures that will diminish them. The authors use a combination of two methods: blog mining and a traditional literature search. The findings indicate that, while scholars have identified diverse security risks and have proposed solutions to mitigate the security threats in online learning, bloggers have not discussed security in online learning with great frequency. The differences shown in the survey results generated by the two different methods confirm that online learning providers and practitioners have not considered security as a top priority. The paper also discusses the next generation of an online learning system: a safer personal learning environment which requires a one-stop solution for authentication, assures the security of online assessments, and balances security and usability.

After Setbacks, Online Courses Are Rethought

After Setbacks, Online Courses Are Rethought | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Two years after a Stanford professor drew 160,000 students from around the globe to a free online course on artificial intelligence, starting what was widely viewed as a revolution in higher education, early results for such large-scale courses are disappointing, forcing a rethinking of how college instruction can best use the Internet.

The big MOOC companies (e.g., Udacity and Coursera) have taken the concept and forced it into a mass delivery system - and failed.  But some of the original creators of MOOCs - in particular, Stephen Downes and George Siemens - see them as being about networking learners:

How to Block Access to Adult Content & Websites on iPhone & iPad | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Apple has long included various means of placing parental controlsand filtering for content available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but up until recent iOS updates there was not a simple method of blocking web-based adult content and material in Safari. That has changed with iOS 7, which makes it extremely easy to prevent access to adult themed web sites and general content that is deemed inappropriate for youth. The web restrictions are very easy to toggle on and off and access to them is password restricted, which makes it perfect to quickly turn on before handing an iOS device off to a youngin’ for unsupervised use.

Metaevaluando Programas de Educación a Distancia

Metaevaluando Programas de Educación a Distancia | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Breaking with Tradition: Video Games as an Alternative Tool for ESL Instruction in Puerto Rico's Public Schools

Breaking with Tradition: Video Games as an Alternative Tool for ESL Instruction in Puerto Rico's Public Schools | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Puerto Rico's public school system has been teaching English as a second language for more than a century but has been unable to increase proficiency rates among students at all levels. A lack of physical and economical resources, combined with a disconnect at the governmental and educational levels, have resulted in an island population that not only does not speak English but sees the language as little more than a tool for employment. Many Puerto Ricans have little or no opportunity to actively connect what they learn in the English classroom to their daily lives due to the absence of a true English-speaking environment. It is possible that video games may serve to bridge the gap between academic content and home life by offering persistent opportunities to use English in authentic contexts and in real time.
