Virtual communities in a secondary school - Discovering the internal grammar of video games - Dialnet

This study attempts to show how the creation of an innovative scenario, introducing video games and online communities as educational resources in the classroom, facilitates the development of new literacies in the context of participatory culture. The experience described was carried out during the 2010-2011 academic year in a secondary school located in Madrid. The workshop was organized using a social simulation video game, The Sims 3, and the online community Play and Learn, created specifically for this project. From an ethnographic perspective, the article focuses mainly on analyzing what happened outside the game sessions, when the students became involved in the online community after interacting with the game in the classroom. The fact that they participated in a virtual conversational space (through a forum) serves to support the game and encourage reflection from all participants. The results show that social relationships were developed within the online community, where individual contributions proved especially important for group discussion. Participation made it possible for students to become aware of the speech and rules of the game and to improve the acquisition process of new literacies.

Credit-for-MOOCs Effort Hits a Snag – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Credit-for-MOOCs Effort Hits a Snag – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

The American Council on Education said last year that it would run an experiment on ways to help MOOC students redeem success in the free online courses for credit at traditional universities. But that project, like earlier effortsto turn MOOC success into college credit, has run into obstacles.

“The wheels turn slowly,” Ray Schroeder, the project’s director, said in an email. “No data has been collected yet.”

The plan was to find a group of universities that would grant credit to successful MOOC students on a trial basis—as long as the students enrolled in tuition-based programs, using those free credits to get a head start toward a traditional college credential. Mr. Schroeder, who is associate vice chancellor for online learning at the University of Illinois at Springfield, and his team would then track those students to see how well the MOOCs had prepared them for traditional coursework.

Noam Chomsky on Technology & Learning

Noam Chomsky on Technology & Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

As far as technology itself and education is concerned, technology is basically neutral. It’s like a hammer. The hammer doesn’t care whether you use it to build a house or whether on torture, using it to crush somebody’s skull, the hammer can do either.

Noam Chomsky

For the Learning {RE}imagined book and digital resource project being published later this year I interviewed Professor Noam Chomsky where we discussed the purpose of education, the role and impact of technology and the challenges of assessment with standardised tests.

I thought visitors to this blog would enjoy this 5 minute excerpt from my conversation with Noam where when asked about technology and its impact on learning he argues that:

“You have to know how to evaluate, interpret and understand. Let’s say, biology, again. The person who wins the Nobel Prize in biology is not the person who read the most journal articles and those notes on them. He’s a person who knew what to look for and cultivating that capacity to seek what’s significant, always willing to question whether you’re on the right track. That’s what education is going to be about whether it’s using computers and internet or pencil and paper or books”
