Since May, I’ve been working just about nonstop on an intellectual and pedagogical extravaganza that I refer to as “Meta-MOOC.” It is “meta” in the sense that one part of this effort is a MOOC (massive open online course) partly about MOOCs. Starting on January 27, I’ll be teaching a six-week course, “The History and Future of (Mostly) Higher Education: Or, How We Can Unlearn Our Old Patterns and Relearn for a Happier, More Productive, Ethical, and Socially-Engaged Future,” through Duke University’s Coursera platform.

The importance of utilizing classroom assessment techniques has historically been outlined by Angelo & Cross (1993) as a way to enhance studying habits and metacognitive skills within the learner-centered classroom. While their manual provides specific strategies to utilize such techniques within the traditional classroom, modifications have to be made to transfer such techniques to the asynchronous online learning environment. This has created some barriers for the effective use of CAT's, but recent studies indicate that when modifications are made, CAT's can provide online instructors with a higher level of engagement (Beebe, Vonderwell, & Boboc, 2010). 


A key consideration in transitioning CAT's to the asynchronous online learning environment is determining at the outset what type of assessment is appropriate. Robles & Braathen (2002) provide three general categories that include: (1) traditional measures (e.g., general recall of information), (2) affective measures (e.g., reflections, portfolios and personal evaluations) and (3) performance assessments (e.g., measures the students ability to demonstrate the use of the skill they have acquired; p. 41). Recent case studies that have made adaptations to Angelo & Cross' (1993) list of CAT's to make them more effective within online environments have received positive qualitative results indicating that students find the information helpful as they make connections across the material and that facilitators are able to use the information to make needed changes to the curriculum while the course is still underway (Berridge, Penney, & Wells, 2012; Lightbody & Nicholl, 2013; Vonderwell, Liang & Alderman, 2007). The adaptations that were made within these studies were minor, but took into consideration how the instructor could increase the quality and frequency of interactions between the professor and students, and among students themselves. Another major factor that has been considered is how the use of additional tools within the asynchronous learning environment could be used to enrich discussion. Common examples include the additional use of social networks, videos, tutorials, and self-assessments, while others include reshaping how and when faculty members provide feedback to students on assignments (Hagstom, 2006; Nicol & Macfarlane-Dick, 2013).
