Adapting to the digital age: a narrative approach

Abstract:

The article adopts a narrative inquiry approach to foreground informal learning and exposes a collection of stories from tutors about how they adapted comfortably to the digital age. We were concerned that despite substantial evidence that bringing about changes in pedagogic practices can be difficult, there is a gap in convincing approaches to help in this respect. In this context, this project takes a “bottom-up” approach and synthesises several life-stories into a single persuasive narrative to support the process of adapting to digital change. The project foregrounds the small, every-day motivating moments, cultural features and environmental factors in people's diverse lives which may have contributed to their positive dispositions towards change in relation to technology enhanced learning. We expect that such narrative approaches could serve to support colleagues in other institutions to warm up to ever-changing technological advances.

Looks like a helpful article for a dissertation.

What stories can be told about the fast-changing world of higher education, and what can we learn from them? Adapting to new situations, conquering fears and overcoming obstacles are familiar storylines, with particular relevance for university lecturers having to introduce new technologies in their working practices.

This is not the only story, there are many others, all unique, all with the potential to move us and make us reflect on our own situation.

This paper reports on a research project undertaken at London Metropolitan University, UK, with the aim of gathering and sharing personal accounts of successful adaptation to the digital age.

Barriers to Creativity in Education

Allan Shaw's curator insight, August 7, 2013 9:44 PM

Schooling itself is a systems technology where resources (people, time, places, curriculum, assessment etc) are geared to attain goals some of which are explicit and some implicit. Creativity has never been an explicit goal, perhaps quite the oppositie (confromity and standardisation) has been the case. Creativity needs a culture and systems that are sensitive to and allow for some ambiguity, error, iterations on the same theme and patience. I'm not sure the current systems can manage that even with the adjustments suggested in this graphic.

Fostering learning communities among teachers [pdf]

According to the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), teachers across countries overwhelmingly desire more professional development.

• In all TALIS countries, there are low rates of co-operative professional development and collaborative teaching practice.

• Countries could use professional development to effectively and efficiently build and improve professional learning communities in schools.

To me Learning is anyway deeper learning as I am a hard critical thinking person, BUT as THEY want to describe it that way, WHY NOT, agreed ;)

Ainsley Stollar's curator insight, March 6, 2014 10:57 AM

This article talks about how a type of learning called blended learning has been created to put minds at ease. It was created to help engage students in a deeper type of learning than the usual shallow learning implemented in a classroom. It relates because students are allowed to discuss their success without feeling the pressure of failure.

Has Education arrived in the 21st Century yet?

Has Education arrived in the 21st Century yet? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

This interesting table, comparing 20th and 21st Century learning, was conceived by William Rankin, a well credentialed doctor of Education from ACU, Texas.

This graphic, which I found on Educational Technology and Mobile Learning, was originally published on iThinkEd in 2007, where you can read Rankin’s full thoughts that led to his creation of this table.

What’s fascinating for me is the fact this was written 7 years ago. It doesn’t date the message. It challenges us as educators to reflect on how far we have actually progressed.

I started hearing the talk about 21st Century Learning back in the 90s and here we are in 2013 and, looking at this chart from Rankin, we have to ask ourselves; for all the talk and planning, have we really moved out of the 20th Century and embraced what this nebulous concept of 21st Century is really about?

I do agree with Katie that is it scary that education as we know it is going to start changing. It is really scary to think that the American people don't like change but it is happening all the time with education. There are pros about this education change and there are cons. Let's take the cons and turn them into pros.

Using The Power Of The Pair To Enhance Active Learning

Using The Power Of The Pair To Enhance Active Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
I remember when I first figured out the "power of the pair". I had walked onto our school library and the noise was way above what I would expect.

The Power Of The Pair

It’s not a ‘sit and be still’ classroom -and that means students are no longer viewed as a single learning ‘receptacle’. Be it concepts in the science lab, or reasoning for a development in world affairs their partner is always the first sounding board for that. They have a present and willing person to speak and listen to. We often switch partners, or move to larger groups, during activities but for the start/end of class students know who and where their ‘home partner’ is.

Yes, You Can Teach and Assess Creativity!

Yes, You Can Teach and Assess Creativity! | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

By Andrew Miller

"

A recent blog by Grant Wiggins affirmed what I have long believed about creativity: it is a 21st-century skill we can teach and assess. Creativity fosters deeper learning, builds confidence and creates a student ready for college and career.

"However, many teachers don't know how to implement the teaching and assessment of creativity in their classrooms. While we may have the tools to teach and assess content, creativity is another matter, especially if we want to be intentional about teaching it as a 21st-century skill. In a PBL project, some teachers focus on just one skill, while others focus on many. Here are some strategies educators can use tomorrow to get started teaching and assessing creativity -- just one more highly necessary skill in that 21st-century toolkit."

Rethinking Education: Why Our Education System Is Ripe For Disruption

Rethinking Education: Why Our Education System Is Ripe For Disruption | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Our education system is not broken, it has just become obsolete When I think of all the tremendous, seemingly impossible feats made possible by entrepreneurs, I am amazed that more has not been done to reinvent our education system.

Our collective belief is that our education system is broken so we spend tremendous energy in trying to fix it. We conveniently place the blame on problems that stem from budget cuts, teacher layoffs, inadequate technology in our schools and our education policies.

We need to recognize the fact that our education system is NOT BROKEN but has simply become OBSOLETE. It no longer meets the needs of the present and future generation.
