Competency-Based Education Programs versus Traditional Data Management (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu

Competency-Based Education Programs versus Traditional Data Management (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
  • Competency-based education programs challenge traditional data management approaches across the academic institution because they defy conventional notions of time in relation to fixed-length terms, synchronous delivery, and student-faculty interactions.
  • Initial results from a study of colleges implementing CBE highlight short- and long-term solutions to timing challenges and emerging practices that can help ensure CBE program success.
  • Among the "not so bad" practices were to ensure that short-term fixes don't delay work on long-term solutions to CBE challenges and that key stakeholders be enlisted to support the required policy, practice, and system changes.

Robin Good's curator insight, May 21, 2014 4:53 AM

The leaked New York Times memo of less than a week ago is making the round on the Internet, as it touches upon many of the key issues and opportunities any news journalism operation is facing today.

From my personal viewpoint the most interesting aspect of this lengthy 97-page memo is how much curation, news and content curation specifically, are part of the future view being described in it.

Since, even trying read the in-depth curated version of the leaked NY report done by the excellent Nieman Lab it may take you in excess of 30 minutes, I have extracted and highlighted here below only the points that are specifically relevant to curators and to anyone researching the future of content curation within the context of news and journalism.

Here, six key points to pay strong attention to:

  1. ...resurfacing archival content. The report cites this passage: "“We can be both a daily newsletter and a library — offering news every day, as well as providing context, relevance and timeless works of journalism.”

  2. ...restructuring arts and culture stories that remain relevant long after they are initially published into guides for readers.

  3.  ...consider tools to make it easier for journalists, and maybe even readers, to create collections and repackage the content.

  4.  allow readers to easily follow certain topics or columnists.

  5. better tagging of the info and content being published.

  6. focus on the less glamorous work of creating tools, templates and permanent fixes that cumulatively can have a bigger impact by saving our digital journalists time and elevating the whole report.

Technology, learning, and institutional mission statements - Casting Out Nines - The Chronicle of Higher Education

On using technology to connect students, faculty and institutions to the fundamentally human activities of learning and growth. Of those three groups – students, faculty, and institutions – I’m finding it to be a lot easier to talk about students and faculty and their relationship to technology than it is to talk about institutions. I’m wondering: Why is that?

Education and Consumerism: Using Students' Assumptions to Challenge Their Thinking

Education and Consumerism: Using Students' Assumptions to Challenge Their Thinking | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
With increasing stridence, college students and their parents frame their educational expectations with a consumer paradigm, viewing professors as their employees, universities as consumer markets, and degrees as commodities. As a humanities professor, I have always bristled at this equation. However, I see a way to use this metaphor for good purpose. Rather than fight this flawed mentality, I present the consumer model during one of our first class sessions and engage students in an exploration of its applicability to the educational enterprise.

Teachers as Technology Trailblazers: 3 Warning Signs That Your LMS Is Preventing Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Many schools and districts have opted to use a Learning Management Systems, sometimes called "LMS" for short. These tools serve as online hubs for teachers and students to share files, feedback, and grades. Examples include Blackboard, Haiku, and Edmodo. And while these tools can enable anytime, anywhere learning for students, they must be used carefully. In some cases, this tool can actually negatively impact the kinds of learning that students experience.

Assessing Student-Learning Outcomes Within a Counselor Education Program

Given that the 2009 Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards require programs to implement curricular changes based on assessment data, there is a need for counselor education programs to share their assessment practices. We review the assessment procedures and structure in effect within CACREP-accredited programs at an urban state university. We describe how university policies and departmental mission framed the assessment procedures and provide examples of assessment criteria and program changes resulting from assessment data.

Y, segundo lugar,  esa misma educación no quiere cambiar. La experiencia y el ...

USDLA is pleased to present the Call for Proposals for the sixth International Forum for Women in E-Learning conference to be held December 3 - December 5, 2014 at the Hotel Contessa 306 W. Market Street in San Antonio, Texas.

The 2014 conference theme developed by your very creative IFWE 2014 Program Committee is: IFWE Walk in Her Shoes.

To complement the theme, the committee has selected six topic areas in shoe-themed tracks for which we are soliciting presentations. The topic areas are:
>In her shoes (diversity and gender issues)
>On the technology tightrope (effective use of technology/best practices)
>Into the future (predicting the future of e-learning)
>Down the path of leadership (effective management and leadership)
>By her side (the importance of mentoring)
>IFWE Walk and take care of ourselves (women's health, work/life balance)

Presentations are encouraged across a broad perspective of e-learning, as the conference participants typically represent all constituencies and types of e-learning. The primary constituencies include higher education, K-12 education, military, workforce and corporate training, but all are welcome. Please be specific in your description and submission about the topic or topic areas your presentation will primarily target.
