Social presence in online learning communities: the role of personal profiles | Kear | Research in Learning Technology

Online communication is increasingly used in education, but it is not without problems. One significant difficulty is a lack of social presence. Social presence relates to the need for users of technology-based communication to perceive each other as real people. Low social presence can be a particular issue in text-based, asynchronous systems such as discussion forums, leading to feelings of impersonality and disengagement from online learning. Features of online communication systems have the potential to increase social presence. One possibility, advocated in the literature on online learning, is the use of personal profiles and photos to help participants to learn something about each other and feel more connected. This paper discusses the question: To what extent do personal profiles enhance social presence in online learning communities? It presents research findings from two studies which investigated learners’ use and perceptions of personal profiles in online forums. The findings suggest that personal profiles and photos help some online learners to feel in touch with each other. Other learners, however, do not feel the need for these facilities, have privacy concerns or prefer to focus on the forum postings.

The U.S. Department of Education Approves Four Additional Capella University FlexPath Direct Assessment Degree Programs - WSJ.com

The U.S. Department of Education Approves Four Additional Capella University FlexPath Direct Assessment Degree Programs - WSJ.com | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

The online university was the first school in the country approved by the U.S. Department of Education to offer competency-based bachelor's and master's degree programs that utilize an approved direct-assessment learning model.

FlexPath uses a competency-based, direct-assessment learning model rather than the traditional credit-hour standard. This allows students to work at their own pace, which offers increased flexibility and the potential to reduce the cost and time to complete a program. Capella was the first school in the country approved by the U.S. Department of Education to offer competency-based bachelor's and master's degree programs that utilize an approved direct-assessment learning model as opposed to the traditional credit-hour standard. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is a regionally accredited online university* that offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers.

"FlexPath is an important innovation for students who are self-directed, highly motivated, and comfortable learning independently. It allows students to control the pace at which they work, offering a significant potential to reduce the cost and time it takes to complete a degree," said Scott Kinney, president of Capella University. "The original focus of our FlexPath offerings was our bachelor's in business and MBA degree programs. We are now expanding FlexPath to better serve the needs of our learners in additional academic areas, including information technology and psychology. These new programs will allow us to deliver a more flexible program option to more of our working adult students, and to expand our FlexPath offerings in a thoughtful, purposeful manner."

The following new degree progams in FlexPath have been approved by our regional accreditor, The Higher Learning Commission, and are now also approved by the U.S. Department of Education:

-- Bachelor of Science (BS) in Information Technology -- Master of Science (MS) in Information Systems and Technology Management -- Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology -- Master of Science (MS) in Psychology

Capella's existing FlexPath offerings that have received approval from The Higher Learning Commission and the U.S. Department of Education are the Bachelor of Science in Business and the Master of Business Administration.

Is Apple Losing its Creative Mojo?

Is Apple Losing its Creative Mojo? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

We now have a date: September 9, the day that iPhone6 is expected to be launched. While there is a still a month to go , the iPhone launch circus and its usual cast of characters are all already in town. The tech media is leaping on every bit of information that can be inferred from the Apple supply chain about the potential specs of the phone (for the record we are expecting Apple to introduce a big screen brother to the current phone and produce it in record numbers).

But the business press is decidedly less excited: a bigger iPhone is hardly the category busting game changer they have been calling for. Some have even gone as far as speculating that Apple under Tim Cook has lost its creative mojo.
