Can you run a classroom with an iPad? - Daily Genius

Can you run a classroom with an iPad? - Daily Genius | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

When talking about the iPad in education, the tendency is to think of it as a tool for the ‘end user’. Or ‘pupils’ as they are often known. As a tool of consumption, the iPad is pretty special – easy to use and driven by apps, it’s a great way for pupils to research, read, watch and learn. It’s no wonder that many schools have taken to it, and take to offering ‘an iPad on every desk’ as the new status symbol of schooldays.

The iPad also has its uses for teachers – as a way for them to drive their professional lives. With some attention to the app store, and some experience in selecting the quality tools from the ‘me-too’ apps, digitally adept teachers (and we’ve talked about them before) can use it to show pupils the tools they’ll need to accelerate their learning; to manage the classroom and projects the pupils do; assessing students’ work, and interacting with them; creating new media for pupils to learn from; and learning things for themselves (imagine that!).

There’s plenty of ways that the iPad can greatly improve your productivity in the classroom. You just need a route map, such as this, from LearninginHand.

And once you’re up and running, you can do a lot worse than refer to this list of apps for educators too.

Online Learning Perceptions and Effectiveness of Research Methods Courses in a Hispanic-Serving Higher Education Institute

In this article, the authors first reviewed related literature on possible factors that influence learning between an online learning (OL) course format and a face-to-face (F2F) course format. The authors investigated OL and F2F learning perceptions and effectiveness of a graduate-level research methods course at a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI). Thirty-three graduate students who took the same introductory research methods course in different formats participated in this exploratory study. The authors conducted content analysis for qualitative data and exploratory data analysis, bivariate correlation analysis, and mean comparisons for quantitative data using SPSS. Similarities and differences between OL and F2F in a research methods course from HSI learners’ perspectives were presented. Findings also revealed that perceived difficulty of coursework and perceived time involvement were important factors in delivering course content when designing either OL or F2F courses. Future directions, study limitations, and practical implications are discussed.

Can Universities Use Data to Fix What Ails the Lecture?

Can Universities Use Data to Fix What Ails the Lecture? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
In a culture of accountability, universities call on technology to collect information about student participation in the classroom.

Today the data collection seems to be going poorly. Few students appear to have LectureTools open on their monitors, and even fewer are using the program to take notes. One student is watching a soccer match. Another is surfing message boards on Reddit. Several are wearing ear buds.

The majority watch Mr. Barker with inscrutable expressions. Occasionally he asks, "Are there any questions about this?" Silence. Are the students learning anything? He does not know.

This lack of awareness has become unacceptable in some corners of higher education. Colleges face mounting pressure to show that students walk away with more than millstones of debt. Traditional universities, especially prestigious ones like Michigan, face less scrutiny than newer institutions that run big online programs and operate like upstart businesses.

But traditional universities also may be less well set up to adapt to a culture of accountability. At research universities in particular, professors face less pressure to use technology to measure and modify the classroom experiences they are delivering to students.

Coaching v mentoring: what works best for teachers?

Coaching v mentoring: what works best for teachers? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Mentoring is a supportive, long-term relationship between an experienced mentor and their less experienced mentee. The idea is that the more senior mentor passes on knowledge and guidance as the mentee finds their feet in a new role.

In state education, mentoring is often structured around fulfilling standards, such as performance management targets, which provides plenty of documentary evidence of the mentoring and its outcomes. The process ends when the mentee is confident or capable enough to carry on with their duties without oversight.

Coaching, on the other hand, consists of peer-to-peer discussions that provide the person being coached with objective feedback on their strengths and weaknesses in areas chosen by them. While discussion is led by the coach, they ask questions that allow the professional seeking advice to reflect on their practice and set their own goals for improvement. This is the opposite of mentoring as the coach does not evaluate, judge or set targets, and the person being coached is in full control of the discussion. Unlike mentoring, coaching also gives the recipient more say on the direction of their professional development and encourages them to take more ownership of their CPD.

Math and Computing Instructors Explore Teaching Strategies to Increase Student Engagement with Digital Tools at Cengage Learning's Summer Institute | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Using the latest Cengage Learning digital solutions, including Enhanced WebAssign and SAM, which will be in use in the upcoming school year, math and computing instructors learned strategies that drive student engagement and student success. Marking its fifth year, the annual faculty development event is part of Cengage Learning's ongoing commitment to ensure customer success using technology in classrooms.

"According to a past survey conducted by Inside Higher Ed, more than 60 percent of faculty report that they have 'more excitement than fear' about e-textbooks and e-resources," said Joanne Terhaar, Senior Director, Digital Training and Implementation, Cengage Learning. "Our goal is to enhance that excitement and eliminate any fear through personalized services and in-depth training opportunities, such as last week's Summer Institute.  Over the course of two days, instructors became more comfortable with our digital products and more confident in their use and impact.  This will help them better engage their students throughout the year."
