How the Power of Interest Drives Learning

How the Power of Interest Drives Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

If catching people’s interest is about seizing attention and providing stimulation, holding it is about finding deeper meaning and purpose in the exercise of interest. Caution is required here, however. Research has found that infusing a subject with meaning by stressing its future utility can produce the opposite of its intended effect.

Several good take away messages here.  Liked the idea of focusing more on the questions we're asking.  Also found it interesting that students lose interest if we tell them how this will apply in their lives, while asking them to identify how this concept or task will be used in their future lives results in increased interest.

Different Strategies in Online Education | Inside Higher Ed

Different Strategies in Online Education | Inside Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

While public and private institutions have chosen different strategies on online education, academic officials in both camps face the same challenges with getting faculty members on board with the efforts, according to new research conducted by the Learning House, Inc., of members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the Council of Independent Colleges.

The findings, detailed in two separate reports, show that public institutions continue to be the driving force when it comes to offering fully online programs. Nearly half of the surveyed AASCU member institutions, or 48 percent, said they offer five or more such programs, while an equal number of CIC member institutions reported they don't offer a single one.

10 Fun Music Videos to Explain Tricky Topics to Students

10 Fun Music Videos to Explain Tricky Topics to Students | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

"In every syllabus or curriculum there are a handful of difficult concepts, dry topics or complex processes that can be difficult for students to grasp, and even trickier for them to remember. Whether it’s a particularly complicated mathematical equation, a wordy poem or a tough scientific process, teachers have been coming up with clever methods and workarounds to help them stick in students’ brains for centuries."

Videos are a great way to hook students on a subject...add music and chances are good that students will listen and watch. Here are ten videos in range of areas. Three are described below.

* The Presidential Election Process - Learn about the "US presidential election, from primaries to inauguration day, including the importance of media coverage and fundraising!"

* Learn the Continents - Help younger students learn “about the different continents, understanding the basic geography behind them and recognizing them on the map.”

* Parts of the Cell Rap - An animated rap where "the relevant part of the cell lights up and moves to illustrate the song as it goes along."

Additional videos explore quadratic equations, MacBeth, creating a graph from an equation, states and capitals, the element song, and the life and works of Shakespeare.

Melissa Jenkins Borchers's curator insight, November 16, 2013 6:00 AM

Finally someone brought the fun back into learning.

Libraries in the Time of MOOCs (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

MOOCs give librarians new opportunities to help shape the conversation about changes in higher education and to guide administrators, faculty, and students through these changes. To assume this role, librarians must understand the MOOCs landscape. Numerous stakeholders will have an interest in the massive intellectual property that ultimately resides in libraries' owned and licensed digital repositories. Studying and adopting technologies to manage and monitor MOOC usage of library resources will be essential to controlling access and tightening Internet safeguards.
