Guiding under prepared students to success in Higher Education

Students are entering institutions across the country unprepared to meet the demands of higher education. While Kansas is above the national average for students prepared for higher education, only twenty-nine percent of Kansas seniors are considered “prepared” for college in
the four determined benchmark areas, compared to the twenty-five percent national average (ACT, 2012). With this statistic, ACT indicates that only one fourth of students complete high school requirements in such a way that leads to success post-graduation. Students are not ready for the expectations of higher education, and as a result this population is less likely to succeed.


Further, development opportunities targeted at under-prepared students are largely unsuccessful at reaching the population. This report looks at the unprepared student population, the role of higher education, and the projected future for under-prepared students in higher education. In an effort to encourage holistic development and successful support initiatives, recommendations for higher education practices and research are discussed.

Competency-based education is a hot idea, albeit not a new one. But as it is with anything in higher education, there is great variation among numerous emerging models. And understanding how they work is complicated by the fact that competency-based programs don’t look like much like most peoples’ vision of college.


On the least-ambitious end is an approach that merely embeds “competencies” into a conventional degree program. Loosely defined, a competency is a specified knowledge, skill or ability that a student can demonstrate, typically through an assessment.

Reflecting over some comments similar to the following: When my colleagues and I have [taught with a flipped classroom], students do not perceive that a professor is teaching them at all, so we have comments such as, “We could just do this at home” or “Why am I paying all this tuition to just teach myself?” or “She doesn’t teach. She just expects you do do it all yourself. The class is pretty much pointless” or “If I wanted to learn on my own, I’d just take an online class or get a book out of the library.”

El rápido crecimiento y la popularidad de la formación online requiere que se lleve a cabo un ejercicio de reflexión en torno a cómo se está llevando a cabo el diseño de los cursos de Elearning. Las investigaciones llevadas a cabo en relación a este tema han concluido que la integración efectiva de contenidos multimedia que sean relevantes desde el punto de vista pedagógico es una valiosa herramienta para facilitar los proceso de aprendizaje de los alumnos.


Sin embargo, en muchos de estos cursos se ha cometido un error, no centrarlos en el alumno sino en el contenido. Y para que la formación sea un éxito el foco tiene que estar puesto en el estudiante.
