The Coming Crisis in American Higher Education

The Coming Crisis in American Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

A number of major problems facing higher education will force significant changes in coming years. Let me mention just three of them. First, the costs of attending college has been rising far faster than people’s incomes. Second, the strong financial advantages from attending college are proving increasingly elusive for recent college graduates, with large proportions of them clearly being underemployed. Third, there is growing evidence that students are learning relatively little while in college, showing only marginal gains in critical thinking and writing skills, and spending more time socializing and exercising their bodies through sports and sex than in exercising their minds. So we need to ask ourselves: What are the missions of the modern university, and how are we doing in accomplishing them?

Instructional design models and theories: Individualized Instruction Model

Instructional design models and theories: Individualized Instruction Model | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
The key idea behind the Individualized Instruction Model is that learners will not only be able to better understand the materials that are being presented, but that they will be able to effectively retain information for much longer. Those who have the ability to grasp a particular concept in a short amount of time can move on to the next subject, while those who are having a difficulty understanding the concept can move at a slower pace, in order to delve further into the topic. As such, every learner is given the opportunity to get the most out of the experience, even if he/she is in a group with other learners who possess different skill levels or strengths.

Another key application for the Individualized Instruction Model within the educational environment is to offer learners of various skill levels and learning styles different learning materials. For example, if a learner is more of an auditory one, instructors can use multimedia presentations via the computer, which he/she can complete at his/her own pace. On the other hand, if a learner is more of a visual one, then the instructor can use graphic textbooks to better illustrate the points of the concept.

How to Make Sure Your Team is Suited to 21st-Century Higher Ed | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Higher education is on a continuous path of improvement as we all clamor to meet the educational needs of an ever-evolving student base. Fairfield University is no exception. We’ve embarked on a high-energy, campus-wide strategic planning initiative titled “Fairfield 2020: Building a More Sustainable Future.” Like #Fairfield2020, improvement efforts assume all are working as a cohesive unit with a goal of formalizing best practice via strong collaboration. In most cases, a successful operation at its most basic level is a transparent reflection of one thing: its people.

Words Matter: Are you talking about technology, or are you talking about learning? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
This blog post was written by Krista Moroder, Professional Development Manager at Digital Promise and ISTE Young Educator Network Leader. ISTE is leading the theme Leadership for Change during Connected Educator Month. I still remember the first time I held a voluntary workshop on Google Docs for a staff of 100 teachers. I called it “10 Ways to Use Google Docs in Your Classroom”. Five people showed up. A week later, I was eating lunch in the staff lounge and heard a colleague say, “They always have an excuse for not turning their work in. They forgot to bring it home, they lost their flash drive, their printer wasn’t working, yada yada”. I immediately piped up: “You know, have you thought about using Google Docs? Their work is stored online, so they can access it from anywhere”. “OH! That’s great! Can you … More
