How to be a successful freelance virtual Instructional Designer (part 1)

How to be a successful freelance virtual Instructional Designer (part 1) | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Being a successful freelance virtual instructional designer is not just setting up your home office. Get these valuable insights to be an ID in demand!

Many of us are now embracing the virtual lifestyle in our careers. And we’re finding there are great benefits. Without a long commute, we find more time for a better work-life balance, so we can spend more time with friends and family and explore our hobbies. We also put less wear and tear on cars, while doing a small part to protect the environment.

That said, being a successful freelance virtual instructional designer is not as easy as setting up a computer in your home office. I have worked as an instructional designer (ID) both in an in-house office environment and as a freelancer working virtually. I have also interviewed and managed many virtual ID freelancers in my role at SweetRush. I have lived through and understand all too well the differences in the two environments, and how being a successful freelancer takes a special mindset. In-house, you are an employee; to be a successful freelancer, you need an entrepreneurial mindset (or at least demonstrate some entrepreneurial behaviors).

In this two-part series, I will share insights on what I look for when interviewing potential IDs for our engagements and some tips that kept me consistently busy when I was a freelancer—even during some lean years when it was challenging, and so many of my peers struggled to find work. Here in part 1, I’ll cover landing projects, and part 2 will focus on behaviors to exhibit once you get assigned to a project team.

What Does ‘Personalized Learning’ Look Like? Video Series Aims to Go Beyond Hype – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education

What Does ‘Personalized Learning’ Look Like? Video Series Aims to Go Beyond Hype – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

An education blog whose authors believe there’s too much hype around “personalized learning” technology has posted a series of video case studies about the trend, hoping to help get beyond overheated rhetoric.

The result is an unusual look at five colleges trying high-tech classroom experiments and wrestling with how new teaching methods change the role of students and teachers.

The videos were produced by the education-technology blog e-Literate, with the support of a $350,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The case studies, divided into short segments covering different topics, together resemble a MOOC. That’s no accident, says Michael Feldstein, founder of the blog and a host of the videos, who hopes that some teaching-with-technology centers will use the videos in their professional-development workshops.

Two Awesome Apps for Creating Educational Shows with Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Two Awesome Apps for Creating Educational Shows with Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

We received an email a few days ago from a teacher asking about a good iPad app for creating simulated TV shows with students. The apps we suggest below are both from Launchpad Toys which have been acquired by Google a couple of months ago. These are probably among the most popular apps among teachers and educators. Students can use them to unleash their creativity and delve into a world of imagination creating scenes, designing characters, animating cartoons and telling their own stories through beautifully recorded shows.

Technology in Higher Education: Defining the Strategic Leader

Information technology has value because it can support and extend human capability, but its value also depends on people. People make IT work, hence our organizations’ focus on professional development. We work with first-time managers. We work with seasoned professionals. Moreover, as technology changes, as issues ebb and flow, and as institutional directions are refined, the profession and its needs change. Our roles, responsibilities, and competencies must adapt as well. No matter what the issue, we must develop people and their potential.

Coding: 123...Doodle! #SketchNoting

Coding: 123...Doodle! #SketchNoting | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
I have been exploring sketch-noting and brain-doodling lately and thought it would be a great vehicle my students to think, process, and organize information.  I started off with a class discussion and asking my students what they find challenging about note-taking.  Many of them shared that they found it hard to keep up with the speaker, and others said that they sometimes wrote so furiously that they couldn't understand their own handwriting when it came time to study for the tests.  Others shared how they found it difficult to make sense of their notes.  Sketch-noting seemed a great way to address some of these issues.  Introducing it through sample images of sketchnoting from Google images and sites like Sketchnote Army was a great way to start.  For more tutorials and ideas of places to start with doodling, I went to Brain Doodles.
