Reflecting over some comments similar to the following: When my colleagues and I have [taught with a flipped classroom], students do not perceive that a professor is teaching them at all, so we have comments such as, “We could just do this at home” or “Why am I paying all this tuition to just teach myself?” or “She doesn’t teach. She just expects you do do it all yourself. The class is pretty much pointless” or “If I wanted to learn on my own, I’d just take an online class or get a book out of the library.”

What Does Science Literacy Mean in the Age of NGSS? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Science teachers have a passion for science — the intrigue, the connection to everyday life, and its reliance on evidence. The love of the content drives science teachers to share the beauty of science with students, and not many are willing to forgo content in place of reading for reading’s sake. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which promote discipline-specific literacy, are prompting some questions from the science-teacher community: “Why teach literacy in the science classroom?” “Won’t that take time away from science content?”


However, the beauty of discipline-specific literacy is that science teachers do not have to sacrifice scientific practices; in fact, science and literacy blend together beautifully and in ways that support scientific practices. In the age of the NGSS as well as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), discipline-specific literacy is not just suggested, it’s required if a teacher is to meet the demands of current standards.

"Competency-based” education appears to be this year’s answer to America’s higher education challenges, judging from this week's news in Washington. Unlike MOOCs (last year’s solution), there is, refreshingly, greater emphasis on the validation of learning. Yet, all may not be as represented.


On close examination, one might ask if competency-based education (or CBE) programs are really about “competency,” or are they concerned with something else? Perhaps what is being measured is more closely akin to subject matter “mastery.” The latter can be determined in a relatively straightforward manner, using various forms of examinations, projects and other forms of assessment.

But one challenge of giving talks based only on slides is that if you want to recirculate your talk in another form, by publishing it on a blog or rewriting it for journal publication, you don’t have much to work with. So I started recording all of my talks. I just use the built-in voice recorder app on my smartphone, which also doubles as a timer to keep me on track.


This simple habit not only lets me later transcribe a talk for reuse but also solves the problem I often have in class lectures, where I’ll delve into a topic not originally on the outline, and sometimes hear myself saying smart things I’d like to remember to return to in future iterations of the class. By recording class lectures then I have a record of what we covered, should I wish to go back to it.

College students typically complete a specific number of credits in a certain amount of time to earn a degree, whether it’s an associate or a doctorate.

But a new pilot program involving about a dozen of Washington’s community colleges, including Columbia Basin College, aims to take the issue of time out of the equation.

The colleges are on track to begin offering in January a new online-based degree in business administration that is competency-based, meaning students can move as quickly as they can prove they have mastered what they’re learning.
