Female students, for example, are poorly represented in science, technology, engineering, and math courses offered online, just as they are scarce in STEM classes conducted in physical classrooms. Demographic analyses of the students enrolled in much-hyped “massive open online courses” show the depth of the gender gap. Circuits and Electronics, the first MOOC developed by the online consortium of universities known as edX, had a student body that was 12 percent female, according to a study published in 2013. Another analysis, posted on the MOOC company Coursera’s blog earlier this year, found that female enrollment in the company’s courses was lowest—about 20 percent—in subjects like computer science, engineering, and mathematics.

These dismally low numbers provide a reminder that “access” to education is more complicated than simply throwing open the digital doors to whoever wants to sign up. So how can we turn the mere availability of online instruction in STEM into true access for female students?

ProQuest Document View - Exploring the Adolescent Hispanic Dropout Rate: A Qualitative Case Study

The Hispanic dropout rate has been an area of concern in education for over 3 decades in the United States. As the population increases, as does the percentage of Hispanic teens that do not complete high school. This qualitative case study focused on the experiences of high school classroom teachers who have worked with Hispanic students. The purpose of this study was to explore participants' perceptions about the Hispanic student attrition rate and determine ways in which it can be improved. The conceptual framework included Erickson's theory of adolescent development and Ogbu's work surrounding the phenomena of Hispanic students' academic struggles in the United States. The primary research question addressed teachers' perceptions about problems Hispanic students face and how those problems effect students' decision to drop out. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 secondary school teachers. Transcripts were analyzed using inductive analysis and line by line axial and theoretical coding procedures. Findings revealed 4 major themes: role of the teacher, dysfunctional home life, language barrier, and peer pressure. A recommendation is that district teachers should become more knowledgeable and experienced with the Hispanic culture. Introducing a professional development model can train teachers in the district to properly work with students who are struggling through their transition into high school. The findings could have implications for positive social change when teachers are better prepared to work with at-risk Hispanic students, which may lead to lower attrition rates and higher retention rates.

Session Description
Learners often feel that training and eLearning are the least interesting and engaging activities. They have no time for it. They are busy. So, we need to push hard or force them to complete courses.

What if your courses provide the learners a sense of adventure, challenge and discovery? What if the courses become so inviting that learners are glued to the screen and refuse to end the course? What if they rave about the course and attribute high praises? What if your course is virally promoted to other learners as a “ must experience” learning event?

Adding adventure, challenge and discovery in your courses are not beyond reach. You will certainly learn useful ideas from this session.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How to avoid using word learning games, but still add adventure and excitement in your courses
  • How to use heroes (super bosses, employees, customers, etc.) or villains (really obnoxious bosses, employees, customers, etc.) to represent learning challenges
  • How to add provocative exercises and interactivities that enthrall learners into action and learning
  • How to set up an adventure-based exercise by following a step-by-step process
  • How to make sure learners not only get excited but also use the knowledge
