How fake news does real harm- TED - Stephanie Busari | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
On April 14, 2014, the terrorist organization Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok, Nigeria. Around the world, the crime became epitomized by the slogan #BringBackOurGirls -- but in Nigeria, government officials called the crime a hoax, confusing and delaying efforts to rescue the girls. In this powerful talk, journalist Stephanie Busari points to the Chibok tragedy to explain the deadly danger of fake news and what we can do to stop it.

The uncertain future of training

The uncertain future of training | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Training courses are artifacts of a time when resources were scarce and connections were few. That time has passed.

The roots of training are to get a lot of people to do the same thing competently. The Roman army trained soldiers for battle and many other duties, like building roads. Standard methods were developed. Drill and feedback over time helped to develop competence. But the modern training field exploded after 1945. Large organizations created training departments, now called ‘learning & development’ or some other variant, but still focused on one thing: looking backwards. Training looks at how people currently do work and then gets others to replicate this. These are described as competencies, made up of certain, skills, knowledge, and attitudes. The assumption was that what works today will work tomorrow. The training department assumed the status quo.

The importance of good pedagogy when using Moodle - an interview with Brent Parkin, Moodle’s new Education Advisor

The importance of good pedagogy when using Moodle - an interview with Brent Parkin, Moodle’s new Education Advisor | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Moodle’s mission has and always will be to empower educators with flexible and powerful tools; tools that can enhance collaborative learning and improve educational outcomes.

Moodle has an abundance of features that can remove mundane tasks from an educator’s schedule and give them more time to focus on creating engaging courses and activities for their students.

Such an incredible collection of tools and features to be found in Moodle does sound grand, but to start with, how do educators access and use them easily in their Moodle or MoodleCloud sites?

How do these tools and features get developed so that they meet the specific needs of an educator?

This study extends prior work on questions related to the academic performance of community college students enrolled in online coursework. Using data from the entire community college system of the State University of New York the study employs structural equation modeling to compare course and program level outcomes. Specifically, we compared GPA and degree attainment for classroom-only students and students with online coursework. Results indicate that online students had lower GPAs but were significantly more likely to attain a credential than classroom-only students. Thi

Smart Seating Charts: The key to better student performance?

Smart Seating Charts: The key to better student performance?  | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Teachers have long known that not every student is perfectly suited to traditional classroom setups, but with budgets tight, doling out individual attention is not always a reality. What if there was a way to make the traditional classroom setting work better for everyone though?

Research has found that classroom seating arrangements have a great impact on student performance and behavior.  A study done by Angela Hammang at Montana State University found that when carefully crafted seating charts were in effect, teachers were twice as successful reaching students and that the attainment of lower ability students was doubled. In her research, Hammang experimented by moving students around in different seating charts to help them find their optimal place, in this case it was a biology classroom, based on learning styles and personalities. She also looked at groupings by gender and past grade performances. In all cases, the students performed at a higher level when the teacher assigned seating in a calculated manner. Students on the underachieving end of the spectrum showed the most improvement when classroom seating was developed with thought, and not simply assigned based on the alphabet or another random manner.

It’s clear that finding the right classroom seating assignment benefits students and educators, but how can it be accomplished without asking too much of the teacher’s time? How can the guesswork be removed?
