Moodle is a magnificent free product and has the potential to enable schools and teachers to build wonderfully unique interactive online learning courses in which learner interaction can be tracked, measured and responded to. Despite this the vast majority of Moodle courses I see are a long list of Word and PDF documents with at best a few forums that enable a minimum of human social interaction.

Critics of online education, especially in the humanities, often stress the importance of face-to-face interaction. It is face-to-face interaction, the reasoning goes, that makes traditional in-person courses superior to their online counterparts. Without rejecting the premise, it nevertheless seems counterproductive to think of in-person courses and online courses in strictly competitive terms. If online courses are here to stay and we in the humanities are expected to teach them, these vigorous defenses of the in-person course will not make us better online instructors. In other words if we want to make online courses better, then it seems crucial to think about how we can promote “interaction” when “face-to-face” is not an option.


The scholarship on distance learning affirms the importance of engaged and approachable instructors in online education. Joseph McClary summarizes the research and notes that interaction with instructors has been linked to increased student learning and satisfaction. Most importantly, McClary notes that high-quality online education requires instructors to engage with students on an individual level rather than merely provide oversight as students proceed through the course.

After three years of experimenting with blended learning, leaders of the Associated Colleges of the South feel a movement is growing, but they aren't sure if the push will last

The association, which consists of 16 liberal arts institutions across 12 Southern states, made blended learning one of its formal programs in the fall of 2011. With support from the Andrew W. Mellon, Robert W. Woodruff and Teagle Foundations, the program has awarded more than $200,000 over the last three years to fund 42 experiments that include flipped classrooms, digital humanities and content from massive open online courses.

Harvard Releases Pilot Studies on Blended Learning Experiments

El Proyecto Título V-Graduado de la Universidad Central de Bayamón, Igualando las Oportunidades de Participación: El acceso a programas Graduados de calidad tiene como objetivo el rediseño de 23 cursos medulares graduados a cursos en línea que promuevan la investigación.  Para asegurar la calidad de los cursos, utilizamos el modelo ADDIE (Análisis, Diseño, Desarrollo Implementación, Evaluación).  En la primera sección contextualizamos el proyecto y describimos el modelo que utilizamos.  En la segunda sección, describimos las actividades que llevamos a cabo en cada una de las fases del modelo.  Enfatizaremos en las técnicas de recolección de información utilizadas en cada fase.  En la última sección exponemos algunas limitaciones y recomendaciones relacionadas a nuestro proyecto.
