Statistics are relevant if used well. A statistic is often confused as having a cause and effect component when in truth it is about correlations and leads a person who is adept at using statistics to question a diagnosis. My point is that if calculus is well-used and has a reason to be taught it should be taught. The same goes for statistics. To make broad sweeping statements is why School will not get the re-boot it needs.

A little over a century after his death, Joseph Pulitzer still looms large at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. The building that houses the school bears his name. Every year the school announces the Pulitzer Prizes from the World Room, a reference to The World, his New York newspaper.


A bust of the publishing tycoon and school founder peers across the first-floor lobby and into what has been a construction zone for the past nine months. But on Monday, professors are to move into the space, the new headquarters of the David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation. In its sleek design and open layout, it feels like a cross between a newsroom and a start-up. An official opening is planned for September 16.

El mes pasado participé en unas jornadas sobre aprendizaje auspiciadas por USATIC con la conferencia titulada “Cómo atrapar y mantener la atención de los alumnos durante las clases”. Tras mi intervención, surgieron algunas preguntas sobre cómo motivar a los alumnos a aprender en el aula. Todos quienes imparten clases, seminarios, talleres o conferencias han tenido que lidiar con aquellos miembros en la audiencia carentes de motivación. ¿Qué hacer en estas situaciones?

MOTIVACIÓN INTRÍNSECA VS MOTIVACIÓN EXTRÍNSECA

Las personas motivadas intrínsecamente están interesadas en el tema por sí mismos o vienen con un problema específico que buscan resolver. Desean hacer algo.

A las personas motivadas extrínsecamente las mueve una recompensa o castigo exterior. No quieren hacer algo y desde fuera hay que obligarlas. Toda enseñanza obligatoria es a priori motivada extrínsecamente.
