Khan Academy has 150 million YouTube views, 320,000 subscribers, and major support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—but that doesn’t mean the free online library of educational videos is perfect. It doesn’t even mean the site is especially effective, say two math professors at Grand Valley State University.

Testing your way to a degree is not only faster than taking the conventional route. It’s much, much cheaper - The Hechinger Report | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Think you know as much as a college graduate but never got a degree? More colleges and universities are giving you the chance to prove it — and to get that degree in the process. A small but growing number of schools are letting students skip straight to final exams and earn academic credit in …

3D-printing may revolutionize medical education

3D-printing may revolutionize medical education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

A kit of 3D-printed anatomical body parts could revolutionize medical education and training, according to its developers at Monash University.

Professor Paul McMenamin, Director of the University’s Centre for Human Anatomy Education, said the simple and cost-effective anatomical kit would dramatically improve trainee doctors’ and other health professionals’ knowledge and could even contribute to the development of new surgical treatments.

“Many medical schools report either a shortage of cadavers, or find their handling and storage too expensive as a result of strict regulations governing where cadavers can be dissected,” he said.

“Without the ability to look inside the body and see the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels, it’s incredibly hard for students to understand human anatomy. We believe our version, which looks just like the real thing, will make a huge difference.”

The 3D Printed Anatomy Series kit, to go on sale later this year, could have particular impact in developing countries where cadavers aren’t readily available, or are prohibited for cultural or religious reasons.

After scanning real anatomical specimens with either a CT or surface laser scanner, the body parts are 3D printed either in a plaster-like powder or in plastic, resulting in high resolution, accurate color reproductions.

Further details have been published online in the journal Anatomical Sciences Education.

Game-based Social Skills Assessments: Making the Play for Better Emotional Health

Game-based Social Skills Assessments: Making the Play for Better Emotional Health | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Educators and parents are now seeing that games—long thought to be a waste of kids’ time—can be powerful learning tools.

Games show promise in improving students’ problem solving skills, learning motivation and engagement, and their test scores. They are also well-suited for assessments, as demonstrated in the 2010 National Education Technology Plan where U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan called for more research about how “assessment technologies, such as simulations, collaborative environments, virtual worlds, games, and cognitive tutors, can be used to engage and motivate learners while assessing complex skills.”

A (slightly) more nuanced Bill Gates offers vision of higher education @insidehighered

A (slightly) more nuanced Bill Gates offers vision of higher education @insidehighered | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

It is ironic, says Bill Gates, that academic institutions are so good at studying the world around them but not themselves.

Gates, the Microsoft founder whose Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has spent roughly a half billion dollars on higher education, made his case to college business officers Monday that colleges must hold themselves more accountable -- or someone else will bring them to account.

“The sooner you drive this the better it is than having it brought down from on high in a way that is not appropriate,” Gates told members of the National Association of College and University Business Officers during the group’s annual conference here, which is also home to "the foundation," as those here call it.

Tools for Ambitious Science Teaching -toolsforteachingscience.org

Tools for Ambitious Science Teaching -toolsforteachingscience.org | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

"Great teaching can be learned. This web site provides tools and resources that support ambitious science instruction at the middle school and high school levels. Ambitious teaching deliberately aims to get students of all racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds to understand science ideas, participate in the discourses of the discipline, and solve authentic problems. We describe 4 core instructional strategies that support this kind of teaching. These “high-leverage” practices make up the Science Learning Framework (below), and have been selected based on extensive research of how young people learn science, on authentic forms of science activity, and how teachers learn to appropriate new practices."

While these characteristics are meant to decry a professional learner, they are also the same ethos that underly the concept of life-long learning in general. Things like  project management skills, ability to research and learn, ability to self-regulate,optimism, and empathy are all elemental components of the psychological and intellectual makeup of a lifelong learner.

Should We Stop Teaching Calculus In High School?

Should We Stop Teaching Calculus In High School? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

“ Calculus has been a staple of high school math for decades, but do we really need it? Computer science and statistics are far more relevant, but the math curriculum today completely ignores both.”

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 21, 5:03 PM

Statistics are relevant if used well. A statistic is often confused as having a cause and effect component when in truth it is about correlations and leads a person who is adept at using statistics to question a diagnosis. My point is that if calculus is well-used and has a reason to be taught it should be taught. The same goes for statistics. To make broad sweeping statements is why School will not get the re-boot it needs.
