Khan Academy has 150 million YouTube views, 320,000 subscribers, and major support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—but that doesn’t mean the free online library of educational videos is perfect. It doesn’t even mean the site is especially effective, say two math professors at Grand Valley State University.

The importance of good pedagogy when using Moodle - an interview with Brent Parkin, Moodle’s new Education Advisor

The importance of good pedagogy when using Moodle - an interview with Brent Parkin, Moodle’s new Education Advisor | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Moodle’s mission has and always will be to empower educators with flexible and powerful tools; tools that can enhance collaborative learning and improve educational outcomes.

Moodle has an abundance of features that can remove mundane tasks from an educator’s schedule and give them more time to focus on creating engaging courses and activities for their students.

Such an incredible collection of tools and features to be found in Moodle does sound grand, but to start with, how do educators access and use them easily in their Moodle or MoodleCloud sites?

How do these tools and features get developed so that they meet the specific needs of an educator?

How can Technology Be Used to Decrease the Dropout Rate? | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
In response to this crisis, The Tech Edvocate decided to put forth the idea that the explosion of edtech can be leveraged to decrease the drop rate in America, provided that educators have the right tools. In this article, we decided to share with our readers a list of edtech tools that we believe can be used to prevent students from dropping out. However, before we get into that, let’s talk about why we should be concerned about the dropout rate.

Putting Math and Science Back into STEM Projects

Putting Math and Science Back into STEM Projects | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
Many teachers have done the spaghetti and marshmallow challenge in the classroom and called it a STEM project. It’s a great activity, but is it really a STEM activity? Sure there’s an engineering aspect to it, but what about the other components? Looking back, these types of activities are what we refer to as surface-level STEM activities.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, Today, 3:52 AM

Can this $14 matchbox-sized device fire up America's kids to get coding? - TechRepublic | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
The BBC micro:bit packs a 25 LED matrix display, motion sensor, accelerometer and two buttons onto a tiny 4cmx5cm board.
Alfredo Calderón's insight:

A matchbox-sized, programmable device launches in the US and Canada today, aimed at offering children a gentle introduction to the world of computers.

Already used in schools across the UK, the BBC micro:bit is designed to make it easy for kids to write simple programs to control the board's hardware, with creations to date including basic games and animations.

The device packs a 25 LED matrix display, a motion sensor, accelerometer and two buttons onto a tiny 4cmx5cm board. It can be programmed using easy-to-grasp tools, such as the drag-and-drop programming environment Scratch, or if the user is more confident, by coding in a variety of languages, including JavaScript or MicroPython.
