Now that I do all my conference travel with only an iPad, I’ve been looking for better solutions to creating presentations and content while on the road. One of the most interesting of these is the recently released free appFlowboard. The free storage includes 250 MB, which seems like enough for most projects, but there is a premium for more storage. Unfortunately Flowboard requires iOS 6 and an iPad, but it creates presentations that are published through its platform and easily viewed on the web, rather like Prezi.

Introduction: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Journal of Educational Technology and eLearning (eJournal) was started in 2009 to create a platform for sharing best practices. It is a publication for the educators of the Middle-East and Gulf region. The journal is available in a print format, and soon online as an open journal multi-media resource, including an associated iPad app soon to be released.
Call for Abstracts:
The editorial board has invited Susan Bainbridge to compile a special edition of the eJournal, to be published in March 2014. The topic is ePortfolios. ePortfolios are becoming increasingly important in Higher Education. Their value for learners includes an increased understanding of the importance of reflection, improvement in organizational skills, critical thinking skills, ICT skills and knowledge construction. They are a valuable assessment tool for instructors offering a more holistic view of a learner’s progress and development. Submissions can include, but are not limited to: research on theory, practical application, assessment, particular ePortfolio tools/applications, or practitioner experience of implementing ePortfolios into a program. Submissions are welcome from researchers worldwide. View this link to review the submission guidelines, themes and standards for publication: Delete the scoop?

Here's a course topic not currently offered by any of the providers of massive open online courses: "The Implications of Coursera’s For-Profit Business Model for Global Public Education." The course was proposed last week by Robert Meister, professor of political and social thought in the department of the history of consciousness at the University of California at Santa Cruz and president of the Council of UC Faculty Associations. He sent a letter with his idea to Daphne Koller, a computer science professor at Stanford University and co-founder of Coursera, and then published his letter on the blog of the American Association of Univ Delete the scoop?

A strong advocate for including digital literacy in medical education, self-described “geek medical futurist”Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhD, believes that online communication tools, such as social media, can improve the way medicine is practiced and health care is delivered. ISTE's NETS for Teachers (NETS•T) are the standards for evaluating the skills and knowledge educators need to teach, work, and learn in an increasingly connected global and digital society.
As technology integration continues to increase in our society, it is paramount that teachers possess the skills and behaviors of digital age professionals. Moving forward, teachers must become comfortable being co-learners with their students and colleagues around the world. Delete the scoop?

Academic preparation isn’t the only factor in college readiness. Also helping to determine whether students get to graduation are social behaviors, like whether they show up for class, engage with professors and make eye contact. A new assessment from the Education Testing Service (ETS) seeks to measure those non-academic variables. ETS today is rolling out the test, which is called SuccessNavigator. It could help colleges identify students in remedial tracks who can pass credit-bearing, college-level courses, said officials with the nonprofit testing giant.

It’s commencement season on college campuses, the time when graduating students see their years of effort culminate a victory: getting the degree. That road to commencement was longer for some students than for others, though, and eventually those varying journeys will be reflected in the institution’s graduation rate. The value of that number has been debated almost from the day it was first calculated in the mid-1990s. The flaws of the official government rate are well known: It counts only full-time, first-time students who enroll in the fall, excluding those who transfer out of the institution or transfer in and eventually graduate.
