Using Multiple Course Evaluations to Engage and Empower Your Students and Yourself

Using Multiple Course Evaluations to Engage and Empower Your Students and Yourself | Blended learning | Scoop.it

Course evaluations are often viewed as a chore; one of those unpleasant obligations we do at the end of each course. In the Teaching Professor Blog post "End-of-Course Evaluations: Making Sense of Student Comments," Maryellen Weimer is bang-on in stating that the comments students dash off can be more confusing than clarifying.

Evaluations as formative evaluation will structure feedback and give your students a voice.  Sometimes you're able to make course corrections during the class. Other times, you revise materials for the next semester.

A Simple Guide To 4 Complex Learning Theories

A Simple Guide To 4 Complex Learning Theories | Blended learning | Scoop.it
Do you know the actual theories of learning? A learning theory is an attempt to describe how people learn, helping us understand this inherently complex process.

Tim Hopper's curator insight, January 4, 2013 2:05 PM

Like this quote.  "Learning theory is an attempt to describe how people learn." It is complex because it is emergent and defies being reduced to simple components, but we must keep trying to understand it.  "The journey is the destinaton" as an Eastern philospher once said.

Alan Ovens's comment, January 17, 2013 2:21 AM
Great diagram. We just need to always keep in mind that theories of learning are not theories of teaching. Always "mind the gap" as a voice once said to me as I sat on a train in London.

I'll be putting these tutorials to work since I'm finally pulling my stick out of the mud and converting my Moodle work from 1.9 to 2.X.  I'll admit I'm in  a rut.  I know the 'old' Moodle so well and it works so reliably that I just haven't gotten around to upgrading.  Now I am!

Ten Steps Toward Universal Design of Online Courses

Ten Steps Toward Universal Design of Online Courses | Blended learning | Scoop.it

Implementing the principles of universal design in online learning means anticipating the diversity of students that may enroll in your course and planning accordingly. These ten key elements will greatly enhance the accessibility and usability of your course for students with and without disabilities.

Step 1: Develop content first, then design.
Step 2: Provide simple, consistent navigation.
Step 3: Include an accommodation statement.
Step 4: Choose CMS tools carefully.
Step 5: Model and teach good discussion board etiquette.
Step 6: Use color with care.
Step 7: Provide accessible document formats.
Step 8: Choose fonts carefully.
Step 9: Convert PowerPoint™ to accessible HTML.
Step 10: If it's auditory make it visual; if it is visual make it auditory.
