The Social Media Monster

The Social Media Monster | AppTech | Scoop.it
It's no surprise that social media consumes a good amount of our time, and it's perfectly fine when you have nothing else to do, but when you are at work its a big no-no.

This infographic illustrates just how distracting social media can be in the workforce. According to a study conducted by Microsoft, social media causes an average of four interruptions per hour. Also, over 40% of disrupted tasks were not immediately resumed.

So how much are all these interruptions going to cost the economy? A whopping $650 billion dollars a year is lost due to interruptions (aka Facebook).

It all makes sense though, with over 1 billion Facebook posts per day, 62 billion emails sent every day, and 400 million tweets per day, it's understandable why people are gettin distracted. Many businesses are taking matters into their own hands and blocking social sites on their networks so employees cannot view them. However, if you just unplug every once in a while and wait until after work to check your Facebook or Twitter, your productivity will increase and your boss will be happier...

The Astounding Power Of Pinterest

The Astounding Power Of Pinterest | AppTech | Scoop.it
In our upcoming October design issue, one of the many fascinating feature stories we’ve lined up is a lengthy profile of Pinterest and its elusive CEO, Ben Silbermann.

That story goes live later this week, but until then, here's an infographic about Pinterest, created by Fast Company's staff and designed by our own Ted Keller.

In this profusion of figures, you find out a few, key things about the image-sharing service. For one, it’s dominated by women. Second, something about its layout and culture stokes an enormous buying impulse. And third, major brands are getting in on the act. It’s not a stretch to say that soon, at least on retail sites, a Pinterest button might become as ubiquitous as a Facebook Like. Check out the infographic, or tour the major findings in the accompanying slide show...

Green Artistry: Gardens By The Bay by Grant Associates

Green Artistry: Gardens By The Bay by Grant Associates | AppTech | Scoop.it
Spread across 101 hectares of reclaimed land in Singapore's waterfront, a horticultural feast awaits visitors at the World Architecture Festival 2012.

Landscape architects, Grant Associates, designed three distinct garden bays including 18 supertrees, which range from 25 to 50m, at iconic points in the master plan. Two cooled conservatories designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and a stretch of horticultural gardens, which include animals sculpted from shrubbery, are also highlights in this green showcase.
‘At one level, Gardens by the Bay is a dramatic 3D garden experience,' says Keith French, project director. 'At another it is a sophisticated example of integrated environmental design.'
Mixing nature, technology and environmental notes, the orchid-inspired master plan facilitates the growth of endangered species and plants from Mediterranean and tropical regions in the two giant biodomes. Over an entire hectare of different flower species are hosted within the Flower Dome, and the Cloud Forest Dome contains 0.8 hectares of tropical plants.
The design encourages the public to interact with the project through a suspended, spiraling bridge which is attached to the supertrees for support. Visitors are encouraged to view the giant garden from many levels.
At night, the canopies glow with colours and projected media, offering an active landscape for visitors. Sustainable energy and water technologies are integrated into the supertrees and cooling conservatories...

A Man-Made, Net-Zero Energy Island Off the Coast of Istanbul

A Man-Made, Net-Zero Energy Island Off the Coast of Istanbul | AppTech | Scoop.it
A proposal imagines 300,000 housing units built into six hyper-energy efficient domes.

This year Istanbul Design Week goes back to the future with a very ambitious project: HavvAda, a cutting-edge net-positive-energy residential island conceptualized by New York-based Studio Dror.

HavvAda, will be built off the shore of Istanbul using excavated soil from a new massive canal planned between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara.

For the design, Dror has drawn on spatial geometry, as well as Buckminster Fuller’s legacy in structural engineering and Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City. Six months of intensive dialog with a team of experts have allowed Dror to realize an ambitious concept that offers a high quality of life and helps the environment.

The island is envisioned as a landscape of six residential hills, surrounding a circular valley dedicated to parks and recreation, supported by a mega-dome structure, allowing for a “three-dimensional grid” that aims to maximize energy and structural efficiency.

How to Understand, Identify & Engage with Social Influencers | AppTech | Scoop.it

I chose this infographic and article from Blackbaud because it helps you go from social media to social business. It was written for non-profits but it definitely applies to any business as well.

By understanding how to evaluate people by their degree of influence and their ability to help change behavior in others can be invaluable to you and your organization.

**It's also important to use this information to understand how you and your organization fit into this mix. They say knowledge is power, once you have a clearer picture, you can shift what you're doing and take your business or cause to the next level for greater results.

Intro:

"Understanding the Value of Your Social Media Influencers: How to Identify and Empower Those Who Can Engage an Entire Community!

**Learn how to use the information your consitiuents are sharing to attract more people to your mission, campaign.

**Learn how to analyze your database and assign social scores to engagers that represents their ability to interact with and influence others across their online networks

**Based on the social score you assign to these individuals, you can then segment them into one of four categories, each of which plays a diferent role on social networks, relevant to your business

Here are the categories:

Key Influencers - They have a powerful impact not only the people they know but also others they don't know. Their posts are widely spread and shared by more people than many other people

Engagers - These people have well-established social networks and are strong influencers of people they know personally

An easier way to get backlinks to your site

An easier way to get backlinks to your site | AppTech | Scoop.it

Infographics are trending on the internet. There are used as a backlink bait by many of the popular brands. It serves as a dual advantage as it benefits both the creater and the user. The creator of the infographics is benefitted by getting a backlink to its website and the user of the infographic has an advantage of displaying visual friendly content on the site.

What are Infographics?

Infographics is short form for "Information Graphics". These are image visualization of data or information. It draws inspiration from Pictographs which are used as a picture language. This concept relies heavily upon the creation of images which are used to convey complex data, graphs, information etc in an easier way before the audience.

90 Percent of Small Business Use Social Media [infograhic]

90 Percent of Small Business Use Social Media [infograhic] | AppTech | Scoop.it
A survey of 600 small business owners across the United States indicates that 90% are actively engaged in social networking sites and 74% perceive social networking as valuable — if not more valuable — than networking in-person.

When 42% of owners say that 25% of new customers discovered them through sites such as Facebook and Foursquare, it is crucial that your business is online and social.

But the news is not all merry, as 58% of surveyed owners said they struggle with promoting their Facebook pages — if they have a page at all.

The takeaway is clear. You need to be where your customers are. Forget what your competitors are doing, as their customers are different from your customers. You also need to integrate internet communications into your normal routine of business networking.

Different Social Networks: personal vs. professional use

Different Social Networks: personal vs. professional use | AppTech | Scoop.it

The Mindset Divide – how people use different social networks is extremely interesting. In this infographic, we compare the use of personal and professional networks, and gain knowledge as to what some of the key differences are between how people engage, interact and use social media, whether for personal or business purposes.

A few key takeaways:

The emotions portrayed on personal networks include nostalgia, having fun and distraction – professional networks are concentrated on achievement, aspiration and success. People spend time on personal networks, where-as they invest time on professional networks. People use personal networks to socialise, whereas professional networks are used to search for career opportunities and stay in touch. Users expect personal updates on personal networks, and more career-based and current affairs updates on professional networks.
