Malicious phone apps and how to avoid them

Malicious phone apps and how to avoid them | Apps and Widgets for any use, mostly for education and FREE | Scoop.it

Your phone goes everywhere with you. You keep it at your desk at work, near your bed when you sleep, and in your pocket during dinner. Many people use their phones for mobile banking, keeping in close touch with friends and family over Facebook and Twitter, and sending countless text messages about their daily lives. But do our phones deserve the trust we place in the security of all the information we're giving them?

If you choose your apps carefully and give out your personal information sparingly, you'll have no problem at all. But if you download everything and give out your name and address every time you can, you'll be making a huge mistake.

Android malware - the more things change...

Android malware - the more things change... | Apps and Widgets for any use, mostly for education and FREE | Scoop.it

If you think Android phones are immune from malware, listen up: you need to protect yourself. A recent exploit that stole personal data shows why.

There are a few anti-malware apps for Android, including Norton Antivirus & Security, and McAfee Mobile Security among others. Those can help, but they won’t catch everything.

To really be secure, you also have to pay attention to the permissions an app is looking for when you’re installing...if a game is looking for access to your contact list, think twice before accepting. But in some cases, even that isn’t enough, because this particular exploit didn’t even ask for permissions.

===> Ultimately, you should be trying to only get apps from trusted sources. <===

And you should always try to check around to be sure that an app is safe before installing it on an impulse. Just the same what you used to do (or should have done) on your PC.

The more things change…

Malicious Web Apps: How to Spot Them, How to Beat Them

Malicious Web Apps: How to Spot Them, How to Beat Them | Apps and Widgets for any use, mostly for education and FREE | Scoop.it
These days, a Web app can be malware. Here’s what you need to know about this emerging threat, and what to watch for.

Tim Keanini, CTO of nCircle, says cyberattackers are talented, creative developers who are motivated to find innovative ways to part you from your money or information.

Typically, a malicious Web app is a form of Trojan horse: The app claims to be something else--and it may in fact run some legitimate utility or application--but once you click it, it runs malicious code in the background that may compromise your system or secretly download other malicious payloads from the Internet.

Speaking of Web apps, Camp warns, "While they allow increased functionality within the browser, users should be aware of how deeply into your system they may be able to reach."

===> Don't assume that you're safe if you avoid Microsoft Windows. Web apps do frequently target specific vulnerabilities, and Windows is often a primary focus, but Web apps--both benign and malicious--are fundamentally platform-agnostic. <===
