6 Amazing TED Ed Talks On Language ~ EdTech & MLearning

6 Amazing TED Ed Talks On Language ~ EdTech & MLearning | Education Matters | Scoop.it
Language is an amazing communicative phenomenon that has picked the interest of linguists and scientists across different disciplines. While we do share with other animals the ability to communicate using a language form of some sort, communicating using a linguistic code in the form of encoded script remains the preserve of human beings. In fact, language in its linguistic written form is behind the development of humankind from primitive agrarian societies to highly technologized mobs.

To shed light on some of the amazing features that characterize language, we are sharing with you this collection of TED Ed videos covering  some interesting linguistic phenomena. Have a look and share with us what you think of them.

15 Ways to Deepen Your Formative Assessment Practice - Brilliant or Insane @AngelaStockman

15 Ways to Deepen Your Formative Assessment Practice - Brilliant or Insane @AngelaStockman | Education Matters | Scoop.it
Formative assessment is a process that takes place during the learning experience. When it is done right, the findings immediately inform feedback and instruction. Grades are never taken, and the stakes remain very low.

I see formative assessment as the ultimate best practice, but I may be part of a small group of educators who feel this way. It’s not uncommon, after all, for some teachers to sandwich formative assessment into their already packed lesson plans simply because someone else has expected them to do so. Some just “get it done” because they’re afraid of “getting dinged” on their teacher evaluations.

Bradley Gomoluch's curator insight, July 22, 2015 4:47 PM

As an educator you know how important it is to use formative assessment, it helps you check for student understanding. More importantly it provides you the teacher with feedback on how you are doing delivering instruction.

The school that's ditched homework to help teachers get a life | tesconnect

The school that's ditched homework to help teachers get a life | tesconnect | Education Matters | Scoop.it
A "traditionalist" school, founded with the explicit intention of bringing the values of private education to a deprived corner of north-west London, has decided to stop setting pupils homework.

Michaela Community School was set up by Katharine Birbalsingh, the headteacher renowned for receving a standing ovation at the 2010 Conservative Party conference, after she decried the state of English education.

But now Michaela’s assistant headteacher, Joe Kirby, has explained that the school has decided to “replace…setting, chasing, checking, marking and logging homework with revision, reading and online maths”.

Worldview Stanford: Why MOOCs will Transform Africa

Worldview Stanford: Why MOOCs will Transform Africa | Education Matters | Scoop.it

By Nancy Murphy

Through Rina and Open a Door, I’m witnessing first-hand the critical role that education plays in building a new generation of leaders and ultimately, peace and prosperity. Yet given the few scholarships available to international students, especially for those with low income levels, few can pursue the dream of a U.S. college education. And despite huge improvements in sub-Saharan Africa, the higher education opportunities there remain limited in number, accessibility, and quality. Deeply entrenched cultural attitudes toward women further constrain their real and perceived opportunities. Massive Open Online Courses, also known as MOOCs, may help fill that gap, transforming the lives of women who are hungry to learn and, by extension, their communities, and countries. That’s why it’s so thrilling to see MOOCs take off in Africa and teach us Westerners a lesson or two about educational innovation.
