I was a little skeptical on this.  However, if you think about it-it makes sense.  All of this technology used for social media is impeding students from learning to critically think, collaborate, empathize-among other things.  Helping them learn to work closely with others in a school environment will help them learn to engage well with others at work and in society as a whole when they are adults.

"Core academic subjects have long been the top priority for districts preparing students for life after high school. Now districts are elevating social and emotional learning, as well, drawing from a large body of research showing that skills like grit and self-regulation are critical to life success. If they’re so valuable, the logic goes, schools should find concrete ways to teach them. And with teaching comes testing — not only to ensure students’ learning can be measured, but so that educators can determine how well the new efforts are working.


“As more programs are being taken up in schools and districts, there becomes this greater demand to assess them, to see if they’re working, to see if students are, in fact, learning the skills that are being taught,” said Lindsay Read, manager of research at the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning, or CASEL.

 

"While there are some assessments on the market, Read said there is a clear need for more direct assessment options, as distinct from student or teacher surveys of social and emotional skills. And when it comes to direct assessment, there’s a need for tests that can be administered quickly in classrooms and return results to teachers right away.

"Enter the Measuring SEL design challenge. CASEL is spearheading a collaborative effort to help the field coalesce around practical and appropriate design principles that developers can use to make future assessments. The first of three annual design challenges produced seven top designs, all at varying stages of development. Some haven’t been used in schools at all, while others are already being piloted."

What Are Kernels? In a 2008 paper published in Clinical Child and Family Psychology, Dennis Embry and Anthony Biglan describe kernels as “fundamental units of behavioral influence”—bite-size strategies that are validated by mountains of empirical evidence and teacher experience. (Barry Parsonson’s “Evidence-Based Classroom Behavior Management Strategies” offers another deep dive into the research.)

I chose this resource because I agree 100% with the title. When I have used different technology and different programs with my students, they love it. Students in todays society get bored sitting in class with teachers talking to them. They want to be up and moving around working with technology to help them learn. I hope that this article will prove to our teachers that they must use technology for the benefit of their students. I have been in special education classrooms where autistic students were benefiting so much from programs on the iPad. Implementing these practices is so important to our students.

I chose this resource because students can be so creative when using technology in their education. They aren't restricted, and can create assignments or projects that make sense to them. They aren't restricted, and don't have to do exactly what the teacher tells them. I hope that this article will come true for many schools around America. Too often, teachers are afraid to let students be creative with the use of technology, because it is outside of their comfort zone to let the students venture off and create their own learning opportunities.

Imagine a parent telling a child, “I’m just not a reading person.” Sounds odd, doesn’t it? Now reread the same cartoon, substituting “math” for “reading.” Suddenly it doesn’t seem so absurd. But it should!

As a society ever more reliant on technology and STEM-based careers, we must shatter the myth that math skill is inborn and reinforce that it is the result of intention and practice.
It’s common to hear well educated adults declare themselves “not a math person,” sometimes proudly. Indeed, many people of all ages believe that mathematical ability is something you are either born with or not, rather than something to be mastered with focused effort. This belief is wrong. What’s more, it’s harmful to kids as they have their first experiences learning math; the attitude that “I can’t learn math” quickly becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. As a society ever more reliant on technology and STEM-based careers, we must shatter the myth that math skill is inborn and reinforce that it is the result of intention and practice. Reforming these perceptions needs to be a priority for teachers, parents, and creators of new learning tools that align to the way these digital-savvy students learn.
