Academic Word List: vocabulary exercises for EFL/ESL learners

Academic Word List: vocabulary exercises for EFL/ESL learners | Applied linguistics and knowledge engineering | Scoop.it
Vocabulary Exercises for the AWL

This site now contains 285 gap-fill exercises to review and recycle the general word families contained within the AWL. These exercises can be found on each Sublist page. Gap-fill exercises are an excellent way to recycle vocabulary through different contexts and can be used to broaden the student's understanding of the range of meaning of vocabulary. The online format of the exercises allows students to get immediate feedback on their answers. Students can work throughfive different exercises for each word family in the AWL. Many of these exercises include different derivations (parts of speech) for the given word. Students are encouraged to complete the exercises for a given level before proceeding to the next level.

How the internet is changing English

How the internet is changing English | Applied linguistics and knowledge engineering | Scoop.it
Online, English has become a common language between users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing.
Pascual Pérez-Paredes's insight:

ome linguists predict that within 10 years English will dominate the internet - but in forms very different to what we accept and recognise as English today.

That's because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don't have to worry about their accent.

Englishes Today 2013 | Applied linguistics and knowledge engineering | Scoop.it

We invite abstracts dealing with any aspect of English as a native or non-native language: the analysis of universal and specific linguistic features (grammatical, phonological, lexical, discursive, pragmatic), determinants of variation (sociological factors, cognitive constraints), identity issues, sociolinguistic fieldwork, Web-derived data, compilation of synchronic and diachronic corpora and repercussions in the teaching of English as a foreign language.

Proposals for 20 minute presentations, plus 10 minutes for questions and discussion, must be submitted via EasyAbs application before 31 March 2013. Abstracts should be 300-400 words long (excluding references). Abstracts will be anonymously reviewed by the scientific committee, and the conference language will be English.

Useful indeed.  Language teachers typically use this kind of corpus to test their intuitions about usage, or in data-driven teaching send their learners to check their own vocabulary choices.  But it's not particularly easy to get started with this database, so this video is a good place to start.

Twitter Is Working on a Way to Retrieve Your Old Tweets

Twitter's chief executive, Dick Costolo, said in an interview that the company was working on a way to allow users to download and export their entire archive of personal posts.
Pascual Pérez-Paredes's insight:

Other social media services, most notably Facebook, already allow users to download a file with all their data. Twitter has been slower to roll out a similar service, although a number of third-party services and developers have cobbled together ways to let people sift through portions of Twitter’s vast collection of messages.
