Pascual Pérez-Paredes's insight:

TAALES is a tool that meaures 104 classic and new indices of lexical sophistication, including indices of frequency, range, academic language, and psycholinguistic word information.  Included are indices for both single words and n-grams. TAALES indices have been used to inform models of second language (L2) speaking proficiency, first language (L1) and L2 writing proficiency, genre differences, and satirical language.

TAALES takes plain text files as input (it will process all plain text files in a particular folder) and produces a comma separated values (.csv) spreadsheet that is easily read by any spreadsheet software.

Cognitive Load Theory: Making learning more effective

Cognitive Load Theory: Making learning more effective | Applied linguistics and knowledge engineering | Scoop.it
Cognitive Load Theory builds upon the widely accepted model of human information processing shown in Figure 1 (this was published by Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin in 1968.)

It describes the process as having three main parts: sensory memory, working memory and long-term memory. Since then, many researchers have added to our understanding of this concept, but the basic model remains the same.

Java word cloud with Log Likelihood

Java tool to create word cloud by calculating frequencies and log Likelihood for a word between two large corpora
Pascual Pérez-Paredes's insight:

Java tool to create word clouds using log Likelihood and word frequencies (or any other weight values). Log Likelihood is calculated for a word between two large corpora input that could be in any language. The tool is language independent and was tested on Arabic and English

The system takes source and reference corpora text files as input and calculate log likelihood and frequencies for a set of keywords input from the user side. The system creates word clouds using java and I also provide file for d3 Javascript word clouds alongside this project, check the llhCloud folder for the javascript and data.csv files, the javascript file has been modified to support log likelihood values as the keywords weight, basically the bigger the value the larger the text.

The java word clouds include a tooltip text feature to show the value of the weight used.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy -

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | Applied linguistics and knowledge engineering | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

The Padagogy Wheel, though, is not rocket science. It is an everyday device that can be readily used by everyday teachers; it can be applied to everything from curriculum planning and development, to writing learning objectives and designing centered activities. The idea is for the users to respond to the challenges that the Wheel presents for their teaching practices, and to ask themselves the tough questions about their choices and methods.

Want To Create Interactive Moodle Content?

Want To Create Interactive Moodle Content? | Applied linguistics and knowledge engineering | Scoop.it
Recently there was, what could have been, a fairly benign thread posted on the Moodle forums about how to create more interactive lessons. JP, the thread originator, was simply looking for a way to bring a little more life to the Moodle experience.

As can be expected from the Moodle community, there were others who immediately dove in and offered help and ideas – specifically by looking at all of the features available in the lesson module. However, JP was looking for something even beyond this.
