ExtraHop Raises $41M from TCV to Untangle Corporate Networks | Xconomy | Application Performance Management | Scoop.it

VeeryExtraHop, a Seattle company that taps the low-level data coursing through IT systems to better manage them and the businesses they support, has raised a $4

Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

Veeery interesting... Extrahop is an attractive platform to organisations mature enough to write their own adapters (what ExtraHop calls Data Inspection Triggers).

Having been involved in this market space for nearly a decade I keep my eye closely on such developments.

The Three Topologies in Applications and Infrastructure

The Three Topologies in Applications and Infrastructure | Application Performance Management | Scoop.it
Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

Well, I have to hand it to them, they get there eventually. Gartner's "new" category definition here.

There's still a lot of overlap here, and there's still a bit of apples to oranges comparison, for example Neebula is not so much a infrastructure performance management as an event management tool, informed by its best-in-class topology discovery. Also, vendors like AppEnsure are capable of analysing network conditions and network paths with greater trickiness than many of the NPM solutions.

Nonetheless a valiant attempt to capture what is going on at the moment.

APMdigest: Where Application Performance Management, BSM, Virtualization, and Cloud Computing Meet
Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

A nice (short) article from Bojan and yes, these are all hard problems. The first one IMO is a symptom of low IT organisational maturity or capability around APM.

Mobile stress: Slow pages undermine your entire brand

Mobile stress: Slow pages undermine your entire brand | Application Performance Management | Scoop.it
Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

I'm a secret admirer of Tammy's, she always publishes great stuff.

I do quite a lot of consulting to Telco's, and mobile network performance is a huge issue because while user experience of a mobile site drives revenue (or revenue leakage) from the site, it also drives usage of mobile data, which is a big earner.

Optimising mobile networks can improve performance and therefore customer satisfaction (and ARPU), while keeping a lid on RAN costs which, let's face it, are huge on a good day.

Fixing the broken performance management process for mobile apps

Fixing the broken performance management process for mobile apps | Application Performance Management | Scoop.it
The mobile performance management process needs a tune-up. Developers and testers can't control connectivity, but can architect, code and test mobile apps for optimal performance.
Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

As someone who lives and breathes application performance, and who passionately hates being made to wait more than 3 seconds (ADHD anyone), it's always mindblowing to me that people would ship a production app without thoroughly testing its performance (and the user experience) under different network, lighting, platform conditions etc.

This is a great article that discusses these issues, and makes the case for the business leaders to put pressure on developers to factor in performance.

Those APM practitioners have a duty to work with those business leaders to model the customer and financial impact of poor performance to explore whether there is a case for getting serious about performance by design.

APM Brings New Jersey Manufacturers to 100% Uptime

APM Brings New Jersey Manufacturers to 100% Uptime | Application Performance Management | Scoop.it
As it transitioned from a legacy environment to open systems New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Group needed a new tool for managing application performance, resulting in adoption of Compuware APM.
Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

This is a good example of how a structured methodology creates the business results. It also hints at the maturity levels you pass through when implementing APM: first on internal apps, then on Line Of Business apps, and ultimately to test & development environments for full lifecycle APM.

Top 8 Application Performance Landmines about:performance | Application Performance Management | Scoop.it
Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

This is quite a nice laundry list of issues. Of course my perspective is that from a management perspective these issues exist within a framework of APM capability, and that you must first address the capability gaps before getting too obsessed with specifics.

Building a Skillful QA Team

Building a Skillful QA Team | Application Performance Management | Scoop.it
‘TEAM’ is a word that always gives me strength. It gives me courage to try out new and challenging projects and to indulge in the riskiest of testing types.
Ben O'Loghlin's insight:

It's unusual in this vendor-driven world to hear a perspective that embraces the "people" dimension (skills, motivations), as well as the "process" dimension (roadmapping, reviews). These sensibilities can be extended over the whole APM lifecycle.
