Cloud Complexity, Simplified

Cloud Complexity, Simplified | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it
Cloud technology is a mess that needs simplifying. That is why Equinix, a global provider of computer data centers and interconnections, will offer a way for companies to manage their services in one place.
CloudWeaver's insight:

Equinix says : “The goal is to get a network of computers that is as elastic as a single cloud service.”

This remembers me CloudWeaver's vision.

Application Defined Networking technology is all about modeling, analyzing and optimizing  these "single elastic cloud services" as social graph of computers. Managing efficiently dynamic complex systems require a minimum of science. Think Systemic to master complexity !

CloudWeaver's insight:

"Gartner predicts that through 2017, 25 percent of enterprises will use demand shaping for capacity planning and management, a significant increase from less than one percent in 2014." Demand-shaping is all about proactive or real-time actions for resource allocation, bottleneck management, workload placement, infrastructure or application changes adaptation.

Are you ready and equipped for this?

Today, the old Sun Microsystems tagline rings truer than ever. In our cloud-centric world, perhaps computers don't exist at all anymore.
CloudWeaver's insight:

Yes, with the Cloud, "The network is finally the computer." And we believe that the real Cloud revolution is all about the application defining its networked system according its needs and business goals. A very elastic network indeed.

Google Acquires Cloud Monitoring Service Stackdriver | TechCrunch

Google Acquires Cloud Monitoring Service Stackdriver | TechCrunch | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it
Google today announced that it has acquired cloud monitoring service Stackdriver. The company plans to roll many of the service's features into its Cloud..
CloudWeaver's insight:

"Adding services like Stackdriver will also allow Google to make its platform stand out in the market, especially as cloud computing gets commoditized with prices continuing to trend lower and few options to differentiate based on the core compute and storage services all the players now offer."  My feeling is that the network (i.e. latency not just bandwidth)  will be also a big differentiator...as well as a service able to measure, monitor and optimize the latency !

APMdigest: Where Application Performance Management, BSM, Virtualization, and Cloud Computing Meet
CloudWeaver's insight:

I cannot agree more in this : "The critical requirement for APM is to ensure that critical data is served up and delivered in a consistent, ordered and un-congested manner in order for the target application to function correctly, reliably and consistently."... It is quite tricky to get any network data in public Clouds.  Network visibility in AWS, GCE..., is what seems to be needed. Do you think that ADN can help here?

Six Myths of Monitoring SaaS Applications

Here are six myths that can derail your use of the cloud. Falling for them can put you on a path to protracted service outages and frustrated users. In addition, I try to shed light on what's needed to fill in some of the gaps that exist when it comes to monitoring SaaS applications...
CloudWeaver's insight:

The key point in this excellent post is the following: "In the Cloud you have to be able to monitor and troubleshoot infrastructure you cannot touch....". The traditional Monitoring and Application Performance Management solutions (CA, BMC, Tivoli...) assume the IT team has a direct control of the infrastructure (physical network, servers...). The Cloud is changing the game, completely, and this is why new solutions and paradigms like Application Defined Networking are created.

A cloud admin's guide to OpenStack Neutron networking

A cloud admin's guide to OpenStack Neutron networking | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it
Keeping up with the changes in OpenStack Neutron can help cloud admins advance the progress of Network as a Service -- which would help them build clouds without networking pros.
CloudWeaver's insight:

In Openstack, Network as a Service is providing a network abstraction to cloud applications. The goal is to simplify the life of Cloud provider (the Cloud Admin in this article). NaaS helps setting up  isolated virtual networks (VLAN)  defined as IP subnets.  Adding classical DHCP and domain name system (DNS) services to these virtual networks provides easy (automated) all-to-all connectivity to the servers attached. This is a good step towards flexible and simplified networking in the Cloud. But, as experienced in AWS which provides this type of full-mesh, isolated, best effort connectivity since 2011 (VPC),  real Cloud Applications need more to achieve the real promise of the Cloud. Can NaaS provide a more sophisticated service at large scale in the future? Not sure. This is why Application Defined Networking exists!

'House of Cards' May Fuel Net Neutrality Debate - US News

'House of Cards' May Fuel Net Neutrality Debate - US News | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it

“If companies would report more of what is happening with their networks and what congestion is happening, where you could see whether they have to deal with more traffic coming from a provider...

CloudWeaver's insight:

Internet traffic is increasing exponentially, as predicted since many years. But has it reached its limits? Not from a bandwidth capacity stand point (fiber is a great solution for this), but from the control aspect, certainly. We should all remember that technically Internet is relying on a collaborative model for congestion control. This principle seems to be really in danger today.  From my point of view, Network Visibility is the a good way to preserve Net Neutrality. This may even be critical to avoid collapses and outages. It is always good that consumers understand what is happening and make informed decisions.

Everything is distributed - O'Reilly Radar

Everything is distributed - O'Reilly Radar | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it
How do we manage systems that are too large to understand, too complex to control, and that fail in unpredictable ways?
CloudWeaver's insight:

I like this post as it explains in simple words how things are changing, profoundly.  Large scale distributed systems are now everywhere and developed by many businesses (specifically in the Cloud). We need new approaches to get these systems adapt dynamically to the unpredictable. "What you want is an early warning system, a way to see the failure as it’s starting, and intervene as quickly as possible." This is the vision of Application Defined Networking.  Moreover, for us, tracking and analyzing application flows latency is key. Latency is often the root cause and/or the early warning of problems in a complex distributed system.

Moving your apps to the cloud? Beware the slowdown effect

Moving your apps to the cloud? Beware the slowdown effect | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it
The use of public clouds should provide your software high performance and huge scalability -- but that won't happen auto-magically
CloudWeaver's insight:

"Public clouds can provide better performance than on-premises systems. But that happens when they're designed well, including addressing the reality of latency." Indeed while in data center you will have latency in 1ms range, expect to have min 3ms up to 150ms behind the firewall in your public cloud deployment. High performance networking is not there and this is why you have to correctly align cloud provisioning and your application architecture. It is where a real-time insight in latency and bottlenecks provided by Application Defined Networking solutions like CloudWeaver will help you.

IT Pros Mistrust Cloud Performance Claims - Network Computing | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it
Survey shows companies think cloud provider performance problems are hidden behind hollow SLA guarantees.
CloudWeaver's insight:

And you? Do you believe that cloud provider service level agreements (SLAs) are poorly written? Do you think there is a difference between "availability" and "performance,"? Would you also say that troubleshooting application performance is difficult because you lack the necessary visibility into the cloud environment? Do you worry about "noisy neighbors" that may be monopolizing resources in the cloud? Are you also looking for a complete visibility solution?

5 Reasons for Ethernet Switch Vendors to Worry

5 Reasons for Ethernet Switch Vendors to Worry | Application Defined Networking | Scoop.it
Hyperscale customers such as Google are distorting the Ethernet switch market, an analyst tells the Ethernet Technology Summit.
CloudWeaver's insight:

Brad Casemore at IDC is saying that "Workloads are moving to the cloud — Amazon, Microsoft Azure, Google, and so on — and he thinks infrastructure sales will follow. The cloud vendors want this trend to accelerate; they’re vying for static workloads as well as dynamic ones.

For Christy at 451 Research, “What Cisco has done is deliver working networks to customers,” and in most cases, a competitor needs to deliver “an equivalently good working network."

My personal question is: "What is the equivalent of a good working network in public cloud" ? ADN?

CloudVelocity's Greg Ness writes that, as Amazon, Microsoft, and VMware engage in the first battles of the hybrid cloud war, a fundamental shift in strategy will emerge as the public cloud matures and becomes more enterprise-centric.
CloudWeaver's insight:

Just coming back from the amazing @SaltConf, I fully agree with this statement:

Automation will be key to the shift from IT complexity to agility. It will have a disproportionate influence over the adoption of hybrid cloud.
