It is quite tricky to get any network data in public Clouds. Network visibility in AWS, GCE..., is what seems to be needed. Do you think that ADN can help here?

The key point in this excellent post is the following: "In the Cloud you have to be able to monitor and troubleshoot infrastructure you cannot touch....". The traditional Monitoring and Application Performance Management solutions (CA, BMC, Tivoli...) assume the IT team has a direct control of the infrastructure (physical network, servers...). The Cloud is changing the game, completely, and this is why new solutions and paradigms like Application Defined Networking are created.

In Openstack, Network as a Service is providing a network abstraction to cloud applications. The goal is to simplify the life of Cloud provider (the Cloud Admin in this article). NaaS helps setting up isolated virtual networks (VLAN) defined as IP subnets. Adding classical DHCP and domain name system (DNS) services to these virtual networks provides easy (automated) all-to-all connectivity to the servers attached. This is a good step towards flexible and simplified networking in the Cloud. But, as experienced in AWS which provides this type of full-mesh, isolated, best effort connectivity since 2011 (VPC), real Cloud Applications need more to achieve the real promise of the Cloud. Can NaaS provide a more sophisticated service at large scale in the future? Not sure. This is why Application Defined Networking exists!

Internet traffic is increasing exponentially, as predicted since many years. But has it reached its limits? Not from a bandwidth capacity stand point (fiber is a great solution for this), but from the control aspect, certainly. We should all remember that technically Internet is relying on a collaborative model for congestion control. This principle seems to be really in danger today. From my point of view, Network Visibility is the a good way to preserve Net Neutrality. This may even be critical to avoid collapses and outages. It is always good that consumers understand what is happening and make informed decisions.
Last year, I predicted that Amazon will "acknowledge the hybrid cloud", so this year I'll take it a step further and predict that they will enter the hybrid cloud market in 2014 with new products and a shift in strategy. That shift will center around

How do we manage systems that are too large to understand, too complex to control, and that fail in unpredictable ways?
I like this post as it explains in simple words how things are changing, profoundly. Large scale distributed systems are now everywhere and developed by many businesses (specifically in the Cloud). We need new approaches to get these systems adapt dynamically to the unpredictable. "What you want is an early warning system, a way to see the failure as it’s starting, and intervene as quickly as possible." This is the vision of Application Defined Networking. Moreover, for us, tracking and analyzing application flows latency is key. Latency is often the root cause and/or the early warning of problems in a complex distributed system.
The use of public clouds should provide your software high performance and huge scalability -- but that won't happen auto-magically
"Public clouds can provide better performance than on-premises systems. But that happens when they're designed well, including addressing the reality of latency." Indeed while in data center you will have latency in 1ms range, expect to have min 3ms up to 150ms behind the firewall in your public cloud deployment. High performance networking is not there and this is why you have to correctly align cloud provisioning and your application architecture. It is where a real-time insight in latency and bottlenecks provided by Application Defined Networking solutions like CloudWeaver will help you.
