It’s just under a month since iOS 16.1.1 came out for Apple iPhone users, fixing a pair of bugs that were listed with the worrying words “a remote user may be able to cause unexpected app termination or arbitrary code execution”.

Both macOS 13 Ventura and iPadOS got updated at the same time, with a pair of security bulletins published on Apple’s web site.

Now, there’s another security update, apparently moving iPhone users only up to version iOS 16.1.2.

Apple, rather unusually in today’s cybersecurity world, rarely announces that security fixes are on the way.

There’s no equivalent of Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday, which is a regular and predictable fixture in anyone’s cybersecurity calendar; there’s no “new version every fourth Tuesday” as there is with Firefox; there’s no predetermined quarterly schedule for patches as you get with Oracle’s products.

Apple’s approach is to keep everything under wraps until a working update is ready, and then to announce its patches at the same time that they are available for download:

Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are generally available.

Interestingly, Apple says that the official reason for doing it this way, rather than having a more regular process that you can plan around, is: “For the protection of our customers.

Apple a publié aujourd'hui des mises à jour de sécurité pour iOS afin de corriger trois vulnérabilités de type "zero-day" qui ont été découvertes lors d'attaques contre ses utilisateurs.

Selon Shane Huntley, directeur du groupe d'analyse des menaces de Google, ces trois failles zero-day d'iOS sont liées à la récente découverte de trois autres failles zero-day dans Chrome [1, 2, 3] et d'une faille zero-day de Windows, divulguées par Google au cours des dernières semaines.

Tout comme dans les quatre cas précédents, Google n'a pas communiqué de détails sur le ou les attaquants ou leur(s) cible(s).

To most iOS users, pasteboard is simply part of the way to copy and paste data from one place to another.

Although a malicious app should only be able to access pasteboard data while active, Mysk’s bypass was to write a demo app, KlipboardSpy, paired to a foreground widget visible in Today View, to prove the hack worked under real-world conditions. Moreover:

As the pasteboard is designed to store all types of data, the exploit is not only restricted to leaking location information. By gathering all these types of content, a malicious app can covertly build a rich profile for each user, and what it can do with this content is limitless.

That’s not only location data, then, but potentially anything the user has copied into pasteboard, including passwords and bank details.

Sicherheitsforscher haben einen nicht patchbaren Fehler im iOS-Boot-ROM entdeckt. Dieser trägt den Namen checkm8 und ermöglicht es, den Boot-Prozess der Geräte zu umgehen und Inhalte auszulesen. Dafür erforderlich ist allerdings ein physischer Zugriff.
Schwerwiegender Fehler in Apples iOS: Sicherheitsforscher haben mit checkm8 eine Schwachstelle im Boot-ROM von iPhones und iPads entdeckt. Laut den Experten von Malwarebytes lässt sich der Fehler nicht vollständig beheben.
Bestätigt wurde dies auch von dem Twitter-Nutzer und iOS-Forscher @axi0mX. Er schreibt, dass es sich bei checkm8 um einen "permanenten, nicht patchbaren Boot-ROM-Exploit" handelt, von dem alle Geräte vom iPhones 4S, bis hin zum iPhone X betroffen sind. Sicher sein sollen nur Geräte mit Chips ab A12 oder neuer.

Apple delivered its latest batch of security updates for iOS and macOS this week.

On iDevices, the update was a full-on point release, bumping the iOS version from 11.3 to 11.3.1 and making it easy to check whether you’ve installed the update correctly: just go to Settings → General → Software Update and see what version number you’re currently on.

For Mac users, the patch is dubbed simply Security Update 2018-001, so your macOS version stays at 10.13.4 after you’ve installed it.

Safari was bumped from 11 to 11.1 in this update – note that if you’re still on El Capitan or Sierra (OS X 10.11.6 and macOS 10.12.6 respectively), where there isn’t a 2018-001 update, you’ll need to update Safari separately.

Just two critical vulnerabilities were patched this time, both of them in the WebKit web rendering code in iOS and macOS.

Apple released updates on Monday that will protect owners of iPhones, iPads, iMacs, MacBooks, iMac Pros, Apple Watches, and (phew!) Apple TVs from having toerags crash their devices.

The bizarre bug was in how Apple products handled a Unicode symbol representing a letter from the south Indian language of Telugu.

When, for instance, vulnerable versions of iOS displayed the character they would get their knickers in a twist, causing the app to crash.

Fortunately updating Apple operating systems is a pretty painless process.

For instance, on an iMac you just need to open App Store, and select Updates to see what updates are waiting to be installed.

Im Internet sind Teile des streng vertraulichen iOS-Codes aufgetaucht. IT-Security-Experten sprechen vom "größten Leak der Geschichte". Vermutlich sind neue Jailbreaks bald die Folge.
Auf dem Software-Entwicklungs-Portal "GitHub" sind angeblich ganze Teile des streng vertraulichen Quellcodes des mobilen Apple-Betriebssystems iOS aufgetaucht. IT-Sicherheitsexperten gehen davon aus,

(Quelle: Motherboard ) dass damit die Sicherheit aller iPhones und iPads gefährdet ist. Betroffen zu sein scheint eine Kernkomponente namens "iBoot", welche das Starten des Betriebssystems regelt. Wer den Code veröffentlicht hat, ist unbekannt. Auch die möglichen Folgen sind noch ungewiss. Man kann annehmen, dass mit der Offenlegung des Codes bald neue Jailbreaks möglich werden, um Software auf den iPhones und iPads lauffähig zu machen, die von Apples System-Software nicht autorisiert wurde.

Bislang scheint aber "nur" Code von iOS 9 und nicht etwa von Apples neustem iOS-Betriebssystem durchgesickert zu sein. Apple hat sich bislang noch nicht zu dem Vorfall geäußert. Der Sachbuch-Autor Jonathan Levin sagte gegenüber dem Portal Motherboard, dass es sich um den "größten Leak der Geschichte" handelt und der Code authentisch sei, was auch von einem zweiten Sicherheitsexperten und Apple-Kenner bestätigt wird.

Inzwischen ist der Eintrag nicht mehr auf GitHub verfügbar. Apple hat jedoch sein iOS-Betriebssystem über die Jahre hinweg immer wieder abgesichert.
