So Mac invulnerability to malware is a myth, at least according to security researchers from Kaspersky Lab.

And although such a blunt statement may be a blow to the ego of some Mac users, it remains true.

Security researchers from all walks have long argued that it was only a matter of time before the Mac became popular enough that virus, malware, and spyware makers would come calling, and the recent Flashback scare has only served as a reminder that overconfidence precedes carelessness. Especially when it comes to technology.

F-secure releases free Flashback removal script for OS X

F-secure releases free Flashback removal script for OS X | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it
The new free tool adds to the growing community effort to help affected Mac users remove the malware from their systems. Read this blog post by Topher Kessler on MacFixIt.

This new tool by F-Secure is another advancement by the Mac community against this threat that accompanies not only manual instructions and help from community members, but also swiftly updated definitions for Sophos, ClamXav, VirusBarrier, and other malware scanners for detecting the malware.

On Apple's end, even though the extent of this infection stemmed largely from Apple's delay in issuing a patch for known Java vulnerabilities, the company finally released the patch and has further announced its own Flashback removal tool is in the works.

It's hope that these, and the continuing efforts by the Apple community, will reduce the prevalence of this infection to a minimum.

#Mac Flashback/Flashfake/how to know if you are infected? | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it

WHAT IS FLASHBACK/FLASHFAKE?

It is a family of malware for Mac OS X. The first versions of this type of threat were detected in September 2011. In March 2012 over 600 000 computers worldwide were infected by Flashback.

The infected computers have been combined in a botnet which enables cybercriminals to install additional malicious modules on them at will.

Check for FREE online (Kaspersky) if your Mac is infected and learn HowTo...

Also users can check if they’re infected with Flashfake by using Kaspersky Lab’s free removal tool http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/flashfake_removal_tool.zip

Apple has now brought OS X 10.5 (Leopard) up to speed with Lion, at least when it comes to security. The company issued updates to Leopard users on Monday with Leopard-friendly copies of the Flashback removal tool that was released to Lion users last month, as well as the ability given to Lion users last week to disable out-of-date versions of Flash in Safari.

The updates come via the Flashback Removal Security Update and Leopard Security Update 2012-003, both posted to Apple's download site on Monday afternoon (also available via Software Update). Both downloads require OS X 10.5.8 in order to install.

'Flashback' virus shows Macs more vulnerable

'Flashback' virus shows Macs more vulnerable | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it
Because Mac laptops' market share has grown so much, it appears Macs are being targeted more.

I hope the very legitimate sense of security Mac users have long had isn’t turning into a false sense of security.

“For years, Mac users have been able to believe that they are safer than the average computer user and turned their noses up at antivirus software. But as Apple’s market share has grown, so has the threat to Mac users’ security,” the Washington Post reports. Specifically, the Post was referring to a virus called “Flashback” that may have infected “up to 600,000 Macs … mostly in the United States and Canada” which seem now to be part of growing bonnet.” A botnet is a network of “bots” (also called “zombie networks”) that are basically compromised computers – infected computers that are obviously no longer controlled entirely by their owners.

Flashback “should be a wake-up call to those who still think that their Mac is invulnerable to attacks like this,” the Posts added.

The security advice offered in the article sounds a whole lot like what PC owners have been told for very a long time:
