New variant of Mac Trojan discovered, targeting Tibet

New variant of Mac Trojan discovered, targeting Tibet | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it
The malware threat on Macs is real, and should not be underestimated.

SophosLabs, is a new variant of the OSX/Imuler Trojan horse. In the past, earlier variants of the OSX/Imuler malware has been spread via topless photos of a Russian supermodel or embedded deep inside boobytrapped PDF files.

If your Mac was successfully infected by malware like this, you have effectively given remote control of your computer and your data to an invisible and unknown party.

===> They could steal files from your Mac, spy on your emails, and plant further malware onto your systems. <===

OS X Malware: A Steady Trickle

OS X Malware: A Steady Trickle | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it

I’m guessing that the myth of OS X invulnerability to malware is pretty much busted by now: at any rate, there has been wave after wave of OS X-related malware reports in the past week or two.

Sophos were the latest big name to weigh in on the OSX/Imuler malware that DrWeb, Intego, ESET and your humble scribe have already commented on, though Sophos calls it Imuler-B and both Intego and ESET call it Imuler.C.

The Java attack has also been linked to bot-generated Twitter spam targeting Tibetan activist conversations by including hashtags like “#Tibet” and “#freetibet”, presumably in order to drown out political dissent.

Topless supermodel photos used to spread Mac malware

Topless supermodel photos used to spread Mac malware | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it
The Mac Imuler Trojan uses images of FHM supermodel Irina Shayk to do its dirty work.

Somehow I doubt that Mac users are any smarter than their Windows cousins when it comes to resisting temptation.

We're all human, after all. And there is a (probably significant) proportion of the population which isn't adverse to searching the web for nude pictures of supermodels.

Of course, the bad guys who spread malware know about human weakness all too well - and exploit it regularly to trick computer users into clicking on files and installing malicious code that exposes them to risks.

===> By default, Mac OS X doesn't display file extensions. Which means, that Mac users might be duped into believing that the file they are about to click on is a JPG image, rather than an application. <===

New Imuler Variant Found–Steer Clear of “Your Dirty Pics”

New Imuler Variant Found–Steer Clear of “Your Dirty Pics” | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it

Intego has discovered a new version of the Imuler Trojan horse, which was first discovered in September 2011. Right now the risk is considered to be low – a sample of this malware was found on the VirusTotal website in a ZIP archive named “your dirty pics.zip.” Inside the ZIP file is an application with an icon making it look like an image.

If the file is run, ===> it installs a backdoor without the need for an admin password. <===

New Mac OS X malware variant spotted in the wild | ZDNet

New Mac OS X malware variant spotted in the wild | ZDNet | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it
Security researchers from Sophos, have intercepted a currently circulating Mac OS X malware variant of the OSX/Imuler trojan horse.

Upon execution the malware will delete the original infection file and only leave an image file of Irina Shayk. It will also open a backdoor on the infected host, transferring private information from the infected host to a remote Web server.

===> End and corporate users are advised to turn on “Show all filename extensions” option in Finder in order to differentiate between different file types and avoid interacting with malicious applications. <===
