Apple CEO Tim Cook might just be taking some tips from Bill Gates --last week he announced he donated $100 million to charity, according to The Verge.

Cook made his announcement during an internal town hall meeting celebrating Apple's successful fourth quarter.

According to The Verge, Cook said $50 million had been donated to Stanford's hospitals, with $25 million for a new main building and $25 million for a new children's hospital. Another $50 million has been donated to Product RED, which is a charity that combats diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

Tim Cook: Apple cares about 'every worker' in its supply chain
A look at Tim Cook, the man replacing Steve Jobs
Since becoming Apple CEO, Cook has differed from his predecessor Steve Jobs on a few issues, including charitable giving. Jobs was not known for philanthropy and had even said he opposed giving away money.

Cook, on the other hand, has started giving his employees big discounts on Apple products and has also instituted a company-wide charitable program that matches donations made by employees up to $10,000 a year.

This comes days after fallout from an investigative article in The New York Times about hazardous working conditions in a Chinese factory that manufactures Apple iPads. Cook responded to the article saying, "We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain. Any accident is deeply troubling, and any issue with working conditions is cause for concern. Any suggestion that we don't care is patently false and offensive to us."

I think there are issues here - who owns the data? Who has access? How will it be used. I don't buy Cook's line of Apple as "a force for good" we've heard similar rhetoric from Google previously, and then of course there's Pearson who want to 'control the worlds education. I'm not sure how Apple or it's watch will deal with - say for example Ebola.

Those questions are there regardless of platform, and are the big blockage in companies and organisations accepting cloud storage or processing. Frankly I fear it is over-blown, but you will see that the major cloud vendors are now going multi site/multi continent (even Apple). I agree, Apple watch will not have a massive effect in education until the brains start to look at the possibilities opened up - and you know what I mean Theo, you are like that. You say you can't imagine how Apple Watch might deal with Ebola, but surely as a device to alert the minute changes in the early symptoms of the disease in the people that can afford one may just provide an alert. Certainly I can see someone looking into early stage Ebola symptom recognition as ripe for Health Kit Development (PS: Remember my name).
