Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom

Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom | 1:1 Instructional Technology for Educating Digital Natives | Scoop.it

That we have evolved our favorite forms of communication is obvious without more than simply watching our students walk through the hallways. It would be easy to demonize social media and each medium that it provides for human interaction. But it would be educationally valuable to embrace it, turning it into an opportunity for our students to develop an appreciation for the advanced cognitive skills they employ on a daily basis. Why not study the highly visual communication models connecting the thoughts that mean the most to them with the social networks where they live their lives?

Visual literacy matters

Visual literacy is the ability to:

  1. Process and make meaning of information presented in an image.
  2. Communicate our own ideas through principles of design.
  3. Create our own messages that capture our visual thinking in a way that conceptualizes problems to given solutions.
Ness Crouch's curator insight, March 28, 2014 9:00 PM

Visual Literacy has a new emphasis in the Australian Curriculum. This is certainly a good article to give ideas for embedding some good quality practice in digital learning.

Free Technology for Teachers: New Course - Google Drive and the Common Core

Free Technology for Teachers: New Course - Google Drive and the Common Core | 1:1 Instructional Technology for Educating Digital Natives | Scoop.it

Over the last few months I have had the good fortune to introduce many educators to using Google Drive to help their students meet Common Core Standards in English Language Arts. All of those introductions have come in the form of in-person workshops. After many requests for this and after much planning I am now offering Google Drive and the Common Core as a three hour webinar series. While the webinar series is not free it is significantly less than cost of flying me to your school for the day.

This website would be a great tool for teachers to use as part of a flipped classroom lesson or even as an alternative to homework. This website has different activities and videos to assist the students on a certain topic. Giving students this as homework would be a different take on the paper and pencil process. Students could develop their skills over the week. It gives a video to assist students if they are having trouble.

10 Real-World BYOD Classrooms (And Whether It’s Worked Or Not) | Edudemic

10 Real-World BYOD Classrooms (And Whether It’s Worked Or Not) | Edudemic | 1:1 Instructional Technology for Educating Digital Natives | Scoop.it

With budgets tight, many schools are hoping to bring technology into the classroom without having to shell out for a device for each student. A solution for many has been to make classes BYOD (short for “bring your own device”), which allows students to bring laptops, tablets, and smartphonesfrom home and to use them in the classroom and share them with other students. It’s a promising idea, especially for schools that don’t have big tech budgets, but it has met with some criticism from those who don’t think that it’s a viable long-term or truly budget-conscious decision.

Whether that’s the case is yet to be seen, but these stories of schools that have tried out BYOD programs seem to be largely positive, allowing educators and students to embrace technology in learning regardless of the limited resources they may have at hand.
